opiates went from being overprescribed in the US to being dramatically underprescribed nowadays. patients in pain who aren't given the medication they need will seek it elsewhere, where they'll find stuff that is either laced or much stronger. despite opiate prescribing being so low and still lowering each year, the amount of overdoses and addicts to opiates have been rising.
all you do by refusing to give them is harm the patient.
same for benzos.
