Army officers are quasi-upper middle class by default in America. They get paid like engineers and respected like big law firm attorneys. It’s just enlisted that are bottom of the totem pole, but even they get a chance to climb because they get free degrees and wealth building tools. If you’re working or middle class, the army is a great way to climb a stratum. Most don’t because they’re lazy, retarded, or unambitious.

It’s not the same once you’re older though. You get better options, joining might mean significantly less pay, it just makes less and less sense unless you’re stuck in truly dead end jobs. I’m kinda fucked because I work at a university but don’t have a doctoral degree. So my career is a dead end. At the same time, enlisting would be a big step back at this point. I would’ve been better off by now if I joined then, but I won’t be better off if I join now.

the issue for you is that is a doubly stupid decision since the govt is probably going to use your life to shit on your decedents

Saying you "served" in the military during peacetime is a sick joke, you really can't call yourself a man if you haven't risked your life at least once. The prospect of not being able to fight while I am still in my physical prime is unnerving to me. Hopefully they get all the women and nogs out of the military in time for a just war waged in our interests, but just writing all that feels like a fantasy.

I did military service after high school
it was ok and I think conscription should be reinstated, but you're not missing out massively without it and you shouldn't glorify it

I did try and get in the legion
Didn't pass the motivation test because they kept me waiting in a hallway for 6 hours staring at a wall standing beforehand so I wasn't pumped enough I guess and the captain was a female like wtf
I'm glad I tried and now my life is so cozy I can't even begin to imagine living the hardships of the legion
Was a very troubled youth but I do believe it should be mandatory
