When the first gringos arrived in the West of the USA they saw that the native americans (navajos, cherokees, etc) already spoke Spanish and had horses, etc.

That is how the indian-cowboy culture happened. It is thanks that Spaniards taught them to ride horses (and brought the horses there) that all those tribes were not massacred. They had the chance to defend themselves.
