They have pinyin and bopomofo which is basically an alphabet system they use to teach the language to younger people, then when they get older they need to pretend that they don't need it anymore. If you need an alphabet system to teach the language to begin with it's retarded, Japan has the same issue with their kana system and chinese characters. When you look at videos that instruct how to read Chinese characters without pinyin it's always 'imagine the character as [something that looks nothing like the character]' they're essentially defunct hieroglyphics.
