What qualifies as wealth is relative, relative specifically to utility, to possible use in the satisfaction of desire. African currency will not get you far in Europe, for example. In the ancient world people used stones, skins, all manner of different things for currency, and they were valuable in one kingdom and worthless in the next.

If one has no desire, one can have no wealth, as one has no desires to be satisfied. Gold, silver, copper, stone, all are the same to the sage. The wealthiest man is the intemperate man, the man with the most desires and the greatest means to satisfy them. He is an eternally restless hedonist without wisdom incapable of finding satisfaction anywhere. The moment he finds satisfaction, he ceases to be wealthy.

The real treasure is not earthly wealth, but grace, the forgiveness of sins and union with Christ. He will satisfy your longings. He will make even the worst material conditions perfectly acceptable.
