Why do expats refuse to learn local languages? I fucking hate having to speak English to interact with my neighbours. Does this happen in your country?

They're doing you a favour. Dutch is hideous enough when spoken by a native. Now imagine broken Dutch.

If you're a native English speaker seeking citizenship in a foreign country, you're likely doing it out of choice rather than necessity. In other words you have money and can choose to live where you want. People with wealth are used to others bending the knee for them and expect it to happen wherever they go.
I'm not an expat myself, but I did a study abroad program in Spain for a few months. A lot of the other students were rich and were basically treating the program as a vacation. One of the girls got extremely upset that no one knew how to speak English because it was negatively impacting her experience.

Because expats intend to go back to their own country o algo. They are DEFINITELY not the same thing as immigrants who come to another country and live there then go back to their home country after they retire

im better at english than they will ever be at norwegian, hell im actually better at english than them. its just easier this way, bu a friend of mine dated a romanian for years and eventually she said
>stop talking english to me i understand enough norwegian that i can start to reply back but none talk norwegian to me so i never get to use it?
she is now a fully norwegian speaker.
its us who need to drop convenience over saying

or whatever.

This was my mindset until 80 per cent of my street was expat. Now they demand we use English in meetings for the owner's association of our shared parking space (obviously they can demand all they want and we're not going to do it, but the fucking cheek of it infuriates me)

Depends on the segment of society they're there to take part in. I work in construction. Two of the carpenters on the project i'm at are Australians. Both fully fluent in Swedish. Some time a while back i guess they decided that they wanted to get settled here and for any kind of upwards mobility in this industry you need to know the language.

The beforementioned project is at a major university however. I know people who work at the school. Some of these people have worked in Sweden for decades as researchers and professors and they can barely introduce themselves in Swedish. I know plenty of Swedish white collars act the same way abroad as well. There should be a term for this class of people. The borderless cosmopolitan class or something.

I mean, I get it. If a Lithuanian and Portuguese person are living in Amsterdam, why would they bother learning Dutch, when they both already speak English, the global lingua franca. Especially if they're not planning on living in the country for more than a few years. Couple that with the fact that most Dutch people speak excellent English to being with, and it further disincentives them from learning the local language. I totally get that it must be frustrating for the locals to feel like a linguistic foreigner in your own country, but these are the realities of living in our modern, globalised world.

Because people in your cuntree brag about all of you being able to speak perfect English as if that's something that's difficult to learn. Why would an outsider put in effort to learn a language that's brand new to him when it's already established that he can just speak English

This is why I think it's harsh to criticise native Anglophones for their laziness in learning new languages. If you move to the Low Countries or Scandinavia, you're going to get by in English and you're going to find all manner of other foreigners doing just that.

Neither do you clearly. Why would an outsider care about YOUR society? An immigrant moves abroad for money and to provide more for his wife and kids. There's no reason to care about anything else when he's not among his people

This kinda mentality is what's holding back Europe.
>OOOOOO you moved 200 kilometers now you're expected to speak our little special snowflake language
European economy would be improved with greater integration, and language standardization is apart of that. One of America's strengths is that people can move thousands of miles away without having to learn a new language, which makes our labor supply adaptable. People should be able to move from Paris to Amsterdam without having to learn a new language.

What material benefits does 'social cohesion' bring you? Language is ultimately a tool for communication and nothing more, linguistic plurality is an inefficiency, and Europe has too much of it.
>muh culture
Language isn't culture. You wouldn't say that Singapore, Lagos, New York, Birmingham, have the same culture. But they have the same predominant language. If language is your entire culture, you don't really have much of a culture at all.

"Expat" is just a cope term for Westerners that don't want to be self-defined as immigrants because, maybe, in ten/twenty years time, they might move back to their home country.

There are Kiwis that live in Europe or the US for 20+ years with a wife, kids, and a mortgage and still self-define as "expats" lol

My older neighbor lived and worked in Thailand for 20 years, with his wife and children from here, but they still maintained a residence in this country and he has recently retired and is now back here for good.
He was transferred there by the company he works for which has offices there and his kids already moved back ages ago for college.
What else would you call that?
