My experience is that they basically take shitty jobs in fields, home improvement, or food processing areas. If locals wanted those jobs I guess it sucks for them, but I haven't had any issues with them.
I am a bit annoyed that there's so little variety of food in my town and every other store is Mexican food, but I'm i'm in a flyover so what can you do.

With only a bit of provocation from Mexico (like when Sheinbaum acted tough against the proposal to send US troops to combat the cartels a few months ago), the average American man will turn into a schizo, talking about settling another score (meaning another Mexican war), how they should've taken all of Mexico back then and kicked the inhabitants all to Guatemala, and so on. Even non-anonymously/pseudonymously, it's not considered inappropriate to shit on illegal Mexicans, calling them "those guys" who are here to make everything worse by accepting subhuman wages, and so on.

This is weird, because Americans are generally nice and polite. Was it Trump or has it always been like that?

The problem is awarding citizenship to foreigners for working on low-paying jobs and to their children for being born in US soil. That's completely absurd from just every possible point of view. A guest worker program would've been the ideal alternative.
