Being born in Russia is a terrible tragedy. It's a punishment akin to a criminal one. It's imprisonment—even for life—and from there, every thinking person who desires a normal human life must escape. It's impossible to be proud of this, impossible to reconcile. But any pride or happiness about it is utter idiocy. It's like being proud of being born and living in prison or a penal colony to parents who were inmates. This thought has been nagging at me lately. But, amazingly, if you accept it as a given (that those born in Russia are sentenced to it), everything falls into place!
