It's really, really, not that complicated. People (re: brainlets) will point to feminism, or women's rights, or education, or the decline of religion, or a million other dumb things. But it is as simple as:

And there you have it. There is no social, political, religious, or economic system where you can say

Granted, the pill and abortion plays a big part in this by making having children completely voluntary; technology plays a role. But you cannot have a wealth-based system AND have a high fertility rate. Not without some draconian measures (double taxes on childless couples or something similarly stupid and unlikely to solve the problem)
