When Quebec becomes independent, maybe it will get back Newfoundland and the Maritimes that were stolen from it, else Canada would be split in two.

I would have thought French would be more widespread.

Color code makes everything below 50% look red.
It's surprising so many people in Ontario know French actually
As for the provinces West of Ontario, few people live there with the exception of British Columbia who doesn't need learning French.
But all Québécois know English.
Just split the country, it's better for everyone. Vive le Québec Libre.
Anonymous Canada No.216438199 [Report]
self reported statistic, people think reading the french label counts as knowledge, it's much lower

>>216438040
why?
you have to take it in school for a few years, then you forget it
other than Montreal anglos don't spend much time in Quebec and you don't need french in the tourist part of town

>>216437271
large number of federal employees who have to know it

>>216438116
if Canada is divisible, Quebec is divisible
all of the resources and hydro are in areas with natives who prefer anglos and would leave independent quebec

There are a lot of French patches all the way from Quebec to the Red River... Central and Northern "Ontarois" is a godawful sounding dialect.
Unfortunately there just aren't a lot of reasons to speak it in a lot of places, outside of Quebec, and even in Quebec, you run into a lot of people who at least understand English if they don't speak it... I've had a lot of surreal experiences teching for bands where I'll try to translate and the local crew will tell me they understand perfectly, then I'll try to translate back and the band will tell me they speak French pretty well... it gets to a point where I just drop into Frenglish because I'm getting English from half the people there and French from the other, and my brain gives up on switching properly.

Are there Acadian communities in the maritimes or is it just a meme?

Full communities would be smaller... like I can't think of even villages too far out from the QC border where the English is accented... but there's enough of them that you'll overhear a lot of French hanging out in Moncton, Fredericton, or Halifax.

The usual cope, too many Quebecers voted Non. Simple as. If they voted in unison, nobody would think about this.

yes, but they tend to be small
there's 300k of them, but the southern ones speak chiac instead of french
northern ones are more french, but tend to be poorer
all of the government jobs require bilingualism, and there aren't a lot of jobs in New Brunswick that aren't government or Irving and Irving is anglo

My Chinese girlfriend lived one year in Montréal after living two years in Sweden. In Sweden, she just spoke English all the time and didn't even bother learning Swedish. But she was adamant that the vast majority of people spoke French rather than English in Montréal. I always thought the opposite was true, maybe it just changed in the meantime in favor of French. The situation doesn't seem that bad in Québec at least.

My birth year.
Most immigrants voted "non" but real Québécois voted "oui". That's why some low IQ schizo maniac tried to assassinate the Canadian premier Jean Chrétien when the results came out.

Canada unironically going full French would be based.

Idk I guess they can revive Newfoundland and turn it into Anglo ( and Irish/Gaelic ) Canada along with Nova Scotia.
