they don't understand each other fully but very basic words are usually the same

West Slavic ones are mutually intelligible.
Ukrainians can understand Poles and Russians can understand Ukrainians, but Russians cannot understand Poles. Russians can understand written Bulgarian but not spoken Bulgarian and vice versa. Serbs and Croats get into arguments on whether to call Serbo-Croatian Serb or Croatian. Macedonian is just Bulgarian. The one outlier is Slovenian.
