I know many European countries have multiple official languages or teach several in school. But from your experience, how common is it for the average person to be fluently conversational in three or more languages?

Is it mostly younger, educated people in cities, or is it a widespread skill across different ages and regions? What are the most common language combinations?

Extremely rare. Most "people" here can't barely speak Portuguese.

Exceptionally rare. Most people in the U.S. speak English and maybe a little Spanish.
It's more likely in the South, and in cities. People who are most likely to speak three languages if I were to guess might be people born here from immigrant parents, growing up speaking English and their parents' language and then learning Spanish.

Most life forms in Germany speak Arabic, french and sometimes a little english (words like hashish, police...)

Everyone young and educated speaks English and at least a bit of Spanish. French is also taught in schools, but most people don't really learn it any more the necessary to get a passing grade.

When I was in uni (2007-12) we had a big intensive English language institute. Most of it was Asians/MENA who only spoke their mother tongue and babby tier English but 3 of the 5 French girls spoke very good English (B2 at least), fluent Spanish, and of course French. 1 of them was also like B1 in Japanese. As I can only speak English and was B2 in Spanish at the time l was very impressed.
After all this time I'm probably B2+ in Spanish and don't speak any other languages besides A1 tagalog lmao

Extremely common because there's a million Russians here who learned Hebrew and English in school and Russian from their parents. Also, many of us grew up watching argentinian tv shows so a lot of Israelis speak Spanish.

I speak Swedish, English and acceptable French.
Swedish and English was of course mandatory in school and we also had to pick a third language (German, French, Italian, Spanish was the options at my school) and the French teacher was my aunt so I picked that kek.
