The American elite, like the Fobes family, became rich by trafficking drugs.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt's family, specifically his mother's side (the Delanos), had connections with...The opium trade in China during the 19th century was a significant source of its wealth.
FDR's maternal grandfather, Warren Delano Jr., was a merchant who made his fortune in China and was one of the partners in Russell & Co., a prominent company involved in the opium trade at the time.
At that time, many of the wealthiest and most respected American families were involved in this trade, which was legal for Western merchants, although it had significant ethical and social implications in China.
Therefore, although the Delano family's wealth (and by extension, part of FDR's inheritance) originated from activities that today would be considered drug trafficking, this occurred within a different historical and legal context by Western standards of the time.

it is historically documented that a prominent branch of the American Forbes family (part of the Boston Brahmins) made a significant portion of its original fortune through the 19th-century opium trade with China.
Key details include:
The China Trade The family, through firms like Perkins & Co. and Russell & Co., were heavily involved in the "Old China Trade". To address a trade imbalance caused by a high American demand for Chinese tea and silk, they exported large quantities of opium (sourced from Turkey and British India) to China, where the drug was illegal.

Back then there was still little delineating the US elite with the British elite. The only reason Europe and the US were interested in silk and tea to begin with was because the British were popularizing these luxuries as status symbols, even Hitler would sip tea to imitate the Brits. This was during the time when the US was too weak to enforce the Monroe Doctrine and there were still loyalists in politics. Also not to mention that economics before and after Maxwell's equations are completely different, they had some weight based coinage system for trade.

Allegations of CIA involvement in drug trafficking center on its alleged complicity in supporting or turning a blind eye to drug operations, particularly during the Cold War, to further geopolitical goals. Key allegations include support for drug-running groups like the Nicaraguan Contras and South Vietnamese officials, as detailed in works by authors like Alfred W. McCoy and journalist Gary Webb. The CIA has maintained that its role was not direct involvement in trafficking, but that it was aware of and sometimes took action against drug trade that affected its personnel, while its main focus remained on other operations.
Key allegations and areas of focus
Southeast Asia: Alfred W. McCoy's book, The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia, alleged that the CIA was aware of and, at times, facilitated heroin smuggling operations to fund anti-communist forces in the region.
Nicaragua: Gary Webb's 1996 "Dark Alliance" series and subsequent book alleged that the CIA backed Nicaraguan Contra rebels who were involved in cocaine trafficking into the United States, contributing to the crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles.
Laos: The CIA worked with native forces in Laos, and while it may not have knowingly transported drugs itself, it was aware of the opium trade happening around its operations and did not take significant action against it during the 1960s.

Oh I'm well aware, but you're also overestimating the Manchu legal system. They had slapstick corporeal punishment for everything and would kill people for not wearing certain hairstyles. Opium was legal at first but when the Chinese and Manchus realized that they had no idea how to make synthetic morphine and how hooked their population was on it they tried stopping the British/US trade of opium because there was far more demand for opium in China than there was for tea.

The first English company, the Levant Company, was created by the English crown with silver looted from Spanish galleons by Francis Drake, primarily the Cacafuegos -This silver was looted from the Potosi mines in Bolivia. Capitalism began with plunder financed by European states.
