>Moche pottery, produced by the ancient Moche civilization that flourished along the northern coast of present-day Peru from approximately 100 to 800 AD, is renowned for its artistic sophistication and diverse subject matter.
>The Moche created an estimated 100,000 ceramic vessels, with at least 500 depicting explicit sexual acts, making their erotic pottery the most graphic and extensive of any pre-Columbian culture.

Those are extremely rare and historically contested by people who deeply study Moche art. However, there are like (literally) a couple of (likely) genuinely homosexual pots. The confusion comes from the fact that it's pretty hard to tell males and females apart in Moche sex pots, though there are some clues.

For example, females are usually shown with longer hair, like in OP's image. But here's the tricky part: Moche males are often depicted wearing turbans, which can look like long hair if you don't know what you’re looking at. But if you actually have the pot in your hand, you can just check, females have a carefully sculpted vulva (but are having anal sex)

So basically it goes like this: superficial researchers interested in ancient sexuality tend to spread the misconception that Moche art is all homoerotic because the figures look similar. Older, traditional Moche scholars who know most of the art depicts heterosexual acts often dismissed the few genuinely homoerotic examples as fakes because they were clinging to old assumptions. Younger Moche researchers today acknowledge that while practically all Moche erotic art is heterosexual, there are a few legitimate homoerotic pieces as well

Yes, I don't remember if they actually used them for holding liquids or if they were just ritualistic, though.

But the Moche aren't the only ones that used this type of pot. I think they were introduced by the Cupisnique culture previous to the Moche and from there they spread across time and space through the Andes.

Basically, almost all Moche sex bottles that have been recovered archaeologically (a small minority) come from burial graves (they allowed sex art in cemeteries but never outside, weird isn’t it?), same as the skeletons like the one you posted (sometimes undead people are having sex!). But stirrup vessels have also been found in domestic contexts, showing signs of use. Many others, though, are pristine because they were never actually used, they were made specifically as grave goods.

Basically, all Moche sex bottles that have been recovered in context come from burials, they're a small minority though, most were acquired through messy huaquero looting.

But from what is known, it seems they allowed sex art in cemeteries but never outside, weird isn't it? The skeleton pots come from burials too, but that’s more in line with what you'd expect, like the one you posted (and sometimes the undead are having sex!).

But stirrup vessels have also been found in domestic contexts, showing signs of use. Many others, though, are pristine because they were never actually used, they were made specifically as grave goods.

This one for example is Chimu, and it does show homosex, like a few other ceramics from other northern Andean traditions in Ecuador (like the Guancavilca) and Colombia (like the Tairona). The Moche and Chimu were kind of an intermix between northern and central Andean traditions btw.

However, those kinds of ceramics from the cultures mentioned above are also rare, though in their case, it's mostly because no other precolumbian culture produced as many sex pots as the Moche did, or at least as many that survived. The Chimu, being descendants of the Moche, produced more than most others, but still not anywhere near Moche levels.

>From a collection of 800 Peruvian erotic vessels, 450 (almost 60%) belonged to the Moche culture, 111 to the Chimu culture...

>there are like (literally) a couple

>Of the vessels from the Moche culture... Only two vessels depict male homosexual relations, and none depict female ones.
