Update on the Chinese family that opened up a China shop in my grandparents village
The shop is now open for business, it's in a rehabilitated ex-textile mill from communist times. I decided to check it out and went inside looking for an USB charger, there were two women (one older who I assume to be the grandma), I asked them if they had cables and they answered me in strange-sounding Romanian and pointed me to a like 15-16 year old looking girl (who I assume is the daughter). We tried to communicate but she doesn't speak Romanian as well as the women and doesn't speak English at all so we had to mime a lot. She was visibly sweating bullets and stammering constantly while showing me cables. I ended up not buying because the USB C's they had were short and I needed a long one. She said "sorry" before I left.
I am quite stricken by the strangeness of the situation. The shop is quite big. Why on Earth would they travel all the way from China in order to open it up here, in a backwater (even by Romanian standards) village with a couple thousand inhabitants?
