Alaska is over 660,000 square miles. That's over 2.5 times the size of Texas. Alaska is where the majority of our wilderness is, but it's not even connected to mainland US. It's massively throwing off the statistics, it's the 4th least populated state and 99.9% of people who live in Alaska live in urban areas.
Secondly, we have a huge desert in the middle of the country. There's no arable land there, so there's hardly any farmland apart from small isolated areas around river basins. There's barely any development because it's incredibly expensive just to maintain basic infrastructure like water and plumbing in such an environment.
I'll count mountain ranged like the Rockies and Appalachian ranges as actual wilderness because they're within the mainland US borders and have vegetation. Yet even in these areas most of the forest cover was clear cut in the past and is now artificially managed woodland.
