Remember 9/11? 9/11 happened because a Saudi construction engineer realized that American ATC software is horribly out of date, configured poorly, and subjected to a broken sceloric and paralyzed Federal bureaucracy. It's not like the EU where individual EU countries can order all their main airports, then smaller airports, to do a software update and make it all work. The FAA's policies concerning software are uniform across ALL aerospace applications and therefore any changes are enormously difficult to do. And then, after 9/11 and as a direct consequence of it, America's two largest airlines went bankrupt and outsourced all maintenance operations to Mexico. And then Boeing outsourced most software development to India while trying (and failing, because Obama said no) to outsource all manufacturing to China.

There's not much more to it. The workers ultimately get totally fucked again. They already do not have the right to strike, President Reagan took that away when he fired all the striking air traffic controllers in 1983. The system has rotted so bad only a handful of serious, hardcore radio and airplane enthusiasts do ATC work and now they are expected to do it for free. Christmas is now cancelled for them, and it remains to be seen if any hang on through the new year.

America's airlines have an answer to this by the way: Transitioning away from airplanes to buses. American Airlines is the most notorious because, as Federal subsidies for connection/American Eagle flights end from Covid and DOGE cuts, they schedule people on buses without telling them until the bus pulls up to the plane and they go get on the highway. This is the future Americans deserve. At least, American states that didn't buy trains LOL because, thanks to Federal budget cuts to Amtrak, communist/liberal states pay for their own trains now and there is no Federal train management bureaucracy that Trump controls to stop them.

I'm serious about this 9/11 stuff. Airboyd has the original 9/11 tapes up on Youtube and other users have overlaid them with FS04 video. All of the 9/11 problems were due to bad ATC software causing the government to get confused, which allowed them to loose track of planes when their computers were turned off, preventing interception by the military.

Little has changed. The FAA had NASA (yes, NASA) make new ATC software and force everyone to update but it's the same bureaucracy in place. And this system is now completely crashing because it's run by morons (Trump, Duffy) and Congress refuses to pay for it and demands these people work for free.

probably not because to do that, you'd have to verify that any individual controller is personally responsible for a specific aircraft movement. This is harder than it seems since airports can legally close or go to do-it-yourself mode where pilots are required to figure it out for themselves over radio. And since most US airports close at 8 or 9 pm every day, it's not particularly hard for a worker to just not come in to work and the airport never opens for air operations. Only a few airports are true 24/7 airports anyway, and they pay private companies to always have full staff which is where we're going: with all Federally provided ATC workers out, airports will have to pay for their own ATC staffs, destroying many and exposing how uneconomical america's airline market really is

all this because musk stopped the spend six months ago and people are only learning the consequences now as we roll towards thanksgiving

We can manage airports. But the airport management system was created in 1926 and last updated in 1958, the same year NASA was created. I don't know if you have ever been to an American airport, but if you ever did you'd immediately notice this. It's why American airports aren't glorified shopping malls like European, Gulf or Asian airports are. It's also why American airports are small, cramped, and still use 1930s/40s era terminals because replacing it is very expensive and difficult.

And these problems are very obvious. A very certain Saudi arabian engineering student noticed them when he visited in the mid 1970s. The system was already straining then, and he completely smashed it in 2001. We've been running on fumes since and Trump not paying for ATC is the final nail in the coffin. Ali won.

During 9/11 it was realized, about an hour after American 77 was lost on radar, that Virginia didn't have any air defenses so the US capitol was completely exposed to attack. About a few minutes after this realization, Dulles's Control Tower noticed American 77 flying to DC without radio contract, and used their special hardline (a tele phone, two braided copper cables) to DC to notify the FAA directly. Also, the military command center managing all this was in Florida because that's where the Cubans/Russians would probably attack us in the Cold War. By this point President Bush was already flying to Iowa in Air Force One, which is the actual command post where decisions are made.
