England WTF?
>In early 1815, a rumour swept London that a pig-faced woman was living in Marylebone, an inner-city area of central London. Said to be the daughter of an unspecified noblewoman, she was supposedly young, wealthy and living in fashionable Manchester Square.
>The Pig-faced Lady of Manchester Square became a leading topic of conversation in London. She soon began to be reported in newspapers as fact, and thousands of people believed in her existence. During illuminations celebrating the end of the Napoleonic Wars, eyewitnesses recounted that in a stopped carriage a woman with a fashionable bonnet and a pig's snout was visible. The crowd tried to stop the carriage, but the coachman drove through the crowd at high speed.
>London newspapers were soon inundated with personals offering to be the pig-faced woman's driver, housemaid and even husband. One wrote, "A single Gentleman, aged thirty-one, of a respectable family, and in whom the utmost confidence may be reposed, is desirous of explaining his mind to the friends of a person who has a misfortune in her face, but is prevented for want of an introduction [...] His intentions are sincere, honourable and firmly resolved."
