I agree that hate unites more than love but since it isn't a real option now in this era, you can only develop by at least not trying to screw over your countrymen at any moment.

I don't it matters to much, since Chile is incredibly irrelevant. We have some important export but nothing that you cannot get somewhere else, and if we don't sell we starve since those are the only things that support our economy, that comes back to the point you made earlier about being so irrelevant and dependent from other countries by only having mining and farming.
Still, in order to have innovations we need to fix our shit first, and that comes from having a more stable country, still irrelevant, but with less corruption, more social trust, which means more money, and to develop little by little. Which doesn't compute in the mind of the average chileano who wants everything easy and fast.
