i remember being surprised that first worlders eat meat regularly, every meal if they want it

anons were talking about some cheap canned food, but it's still meat nonetheless

a normal middle class here might eat meat only one meal per day, while a poorfag would count himself lucky to eat chicken once a week, let alone meat

in 80's you could work for an hour on minimum wage and buy 8 big macs
now you work for an hour and can buy a single one that's 40% smaller and made with 100% worse ingredients that's pure slop and unnatural.

Why is it so difficult for thirdies to develop their economies beyond farming and mining? Does the abundance of natural resources discourage investment in perceivedly risky manufacturing which can create higher value generating jobs?

>Does the abundance of natural resources discourage investment in perceivedly risky manufacturing which can create higher value generating jobs?
Yeah, though there is no reason to venture in more risky territories if you already have something. Having said that, the real problem isn't having a non-diverse economy but corruption.

Australia's economy isn't complex, but they're still one of the richest countries.

Australia is a legacy of the British experience
The fact that most industrialized economies ,where there is relatively low corruption, were former Western colonial powers might suggest something else.

The colonial powers did get wealthy because they had a lot of factory jobs, allowing ordinary people to earn more and pay more taxes. The higher tax base for governments allowed it to pay their public servants more to the extent they were satisfied enough as to not be interested in taking bribes. So this lead to lower corruption.

You have to remember that Western countries bothered to industrialize because they literally wanted to mass produce armorments and war-related supplies to screw over their other Western neighbors

I was referring to nowadays. At least here there was an attempt of industrialization but everything ended after Pinochet. Back then water, university were free, he basically privatized everything, leaving little mobility for most of the population (since of most people always were poor). For what my parents told me, education was actually better before the coup. Of course it was still poor, but without basic stuff you can never develop further.

I think that's what happened, it became stagnated, and when the country opened again, it was easier to just let private companies (who already knew what they were doing), instead of investing on the population and have the risk of failing, besides the elite ruling class here have never consider themselves "Chilean", they have never trust the people, so they just leave it to foreigners.

I think the problem with Chile, like most Latin American countries, is that you're not really competing with one another for resources and other riches, at least anymore. If you Chileans faced a constant threat of, say, Argentinian invasion, you'd have half of those problems you mentioned, I believe
Anonymous Chile No.216649754 [Report] >>216650002

Not really, due to international treaties wars are very unlikely, the major problem would be that usually regions develop together as strategic commercial partners. So in order to have a developed nation, you need developed neighbors. You get nothing by educating your people, then getting droves of uneducated people from your neighbors.

Biggest problem of Chile is its people. Yeah, you can say the past left scars, but when you want something you get it. Problem is here it's far too common doing shortcuts for easy cash instead of developing a structured system and the viveza criolla (taking advantage of other is encouraged).

The causes are always complex, but solution is actually easy, because despite everything the majority always hold the power, they dictate the social rules, and dictate how the country should be ruled. But if you have a polarized population who only thinks about themselves you'll get nothing.

Usually minimum wage doesn't mean shit because it's usually either lower or higher than the actual wages. It's just a number politicians randomly put on a paper.
It's not a reliable way of calculating actual income, or purchasing power like in this case.

I hate look like a real dick, but having a common enemy unites entire peoples to encourage co-operation between your countrymen. Now that you can't casually declare war on your neighbors, it's not really possible to have real enemies.

It's unfortunate but you guys really missed that opportunity in the past. But you might be able benefit from a US-China confrontation where both powers try to vie for the support of the common Chilean people in this age of social media. It is because of this benefit from the access to the internet that things would be different from the Cold War

I agree that hate unites more than love but since it isn't a real option now in this era, you can only develop by at least not trying to screw over your countrymen at any moment.

I don't it matters to much, since Chile is incredibly irrelevant. We have some important export but nothing that you cannot get somewhere else, and if we don't sell we starve since those are the only things that support our economy, that comes back to the point you made earlier about being so irrelevant and dependent from other countries by only having mining and farming.

Still, in order to have innovations we need to fix our shit first, and that comes from having a more stable country, still irrelevant, but with less corruption, more social trust, which means more money, and to develop little by little. Which doesn't compute in the mind of the average chileano who wants everything easy and fast.

The problem with shithole is "I WANT IT NOW I DONT CARE FOR THE FUTURE" kind of mindset. If everything is setup properly, anything can be easy and fast. I'm thinking something like "tech tree" in /gsg/ games or civ, where you have to unlock all the requirements to be more efficient and faster, alas sometimes these boomers and some of the younglings don't think that deep.
