If you're not rich then you're making maybe like $100k/yr or less and working in Manhattan, living with roommates in a shittier neighborhood or in a studio probably not in Manhattan. There's lots of stuff to do and opportunities to meet people, but high stress and you have very little personal space. It can be draining and isn't for everybody. Pretty safe overall, most neighborhoods are safe now in Brooklyn/Manhattan. Fun place to be for your 20's/30's. A lot of people age out of the energy it requires and move outside the city to a house with some space for the kids. Also you get to be virtually anonymous all the time, which can be good or bad for different people.

if you're not rich but you're also not ghetto (meaning you're not black or hispanic) it sucks because it's really hard to afford to live in non-ghetto areas

if you're black or hispanic idk it's probably not that expensive but every time i drive through black or hispanic areas like the bronx it seems like hell on earth so it's probably still pretty bad

so honestly i think it's a great city, maybe the greatest on earth, but only if you're visiting, living there isn't that great
