also, as soon as japan was exposed to anything more modern than a milling stone by western powers, they instantly threw away the GRORIUS NIHONTO and adopted western sabers, along with much more practical western uniforms. they only reverted back to using katanas as dress swords when swords as a whole became obsolete and had no practical use in the field, but when they still used swords in actual combat, guess what? nips used european style sabers, because they undestood that those were objectively better weapons.

Anonymous United States No.216660889 [Report] >>216661071
>>216660565
I don't think they're terrible, just woefully overdone for what they were actually used for. The sword wasn't designed for armor, it was primarily used on naked peasants, yet they took their scarce iron resources and made actually decently made steel (albeit using primitive methods) for an implement that didn't even need that quality of steel. Iron anything was rare in Japan they used wood for almost everything, even cheap iron daggers were hoarded. They had plenty of poor quality iron they just insisted on using clay furnaces and required such an insane amount of iron sand to get even half-decent steel.

Japs didn't really care either until AFTER the Meiji Restoration. The cult of "bushido" and its attendant katana fetish were created whole cloth by fascist right wing Jap extremists to enforce obeduence to the national government and to militarize Japan in the modern era. I disagree with this, bushido, (however you define it, I define it as primarily a philosophy obsessed with getting you in a state of constant mortality salience and self-sacrifice, the other aspects like sincerity aren't as unique to bushido as bushido basically gets that from confucianism) had existed for basically the entirety of Japanese history. People loved the stories of Kusunoki Masashige and Minamoto no Yoshitsune far before fascism existed.

As for your point about katana obsession you may be right about that though however I don't get what you mean that it was to enforce obedience to the national government after the Meiji restoration as Meiji outlawed samurai carrying the katana and that's one of the thing which disgruntled people like Saigo Takamori. I'd say the showa period would make more sense with what you're saying and mystifying the katana as a symbol of the samurai and producing them for their troops if they didn't have a family katana to bring into battle as many samurai descendants in the second world war didn't need the government produced ones, they used their ancestor's sword

not really, even the samurai didn't use katanas to pierce armor because that's not what they were made to do
instead they had daggers called yoroi-doshi with thicker, shorter blades, much like how in europe knights would have a dagger called a rondel with short, thick blades intended for hitting through weak spots of the armor
and in battle samurai would usually wield bows, melee weapons were sidearms
this idea that they would take the field on foot is modern nonsense
they were, by and large, elite cavalry and they used cavalry archer tactics which is exactly why they were superior to the peasants who fought on foot using basic infantry weapons such as spears
and when they did fight in melee, they charged the enemy using lances and other polearms
again, almost exactly how knights were superior to the peasant militia in europe
and even their social class was comparable - both samurai and knights were land-owning nobility

There’s a shared metallurgical philosophy linking Lexus body engineering and the traditional forging of a Katana. 2.0 GPa hot-stamped steel means the material can withstand 2,000 MPa of tensile stress before deforming. What’s special is the combination of hardness and ductility. The steel’s microstructure is optimized so it resists cracking while still absorbing energy in a crash. The result is a lighter, safer, and stiffer body shell.

look man I ain't shit-talking the katana
but the image of the samurai dressed in robes with a katana on their hip isn't at all how they went into battle - that was just their casual clothing!
in battle they were heavily armored, on horseback, and used bows, and much heavier melee weapons
and contrary to the common myth, they didn't shy away from using firearms either, once they were made available in Japan - they fucking loved muskets and cannons!

Katana was crafted with the same duality in mind. Its core (Shingane) was softer, more ductile steel absorbing shock. Its outer jacket (Kawagane) was harder, high-carbon steel keeping a razor edge. The smiths achieved this by folding and differential tempering, forming a complex layered microstructure. The temper line (Hamon) you see on a real Katana is literally the visual boundary between hard and soft zones, the balance of toughness and flexibility. European knightly swords, by contrast, were typically homogeneous, single-composition blades. They were designed for armor combat, not finesse.
Anonymous Finland No.216672141 [Report]
and you know with the katana, with its curved blade, there's one advantage par none

I'm quite aware of this metallurgical composition of the katana. And I also appreciate the way the Japanese consider the aesthetic of the blade part of the beauty of the sword. In European swords they mainly pay attention to how finely made the hilt is, while the blade may as well be replaceable. And I suppose it is, if it was made just for war.

Katana’s layered construction blends a hard edge (for cutting) and a soft spine (for flexibility). Modern high-tensile steel blends hard martensite and ductile ferrite in the same way. Part of waging war is knowing who to not fight. If you walked up to Mike Tyson and started a fight, is anyone going to ask "Why did that guy get his ass beat?" They lost because they were weaker and they had a bad strategy, that's all.

I think the main reason why Japanese martial culture is seen as cool is simply because it looks cool. Katanas look cool; it doesn't matter if they aren't effective because obviously the Japanese are militarily inferior to Westerners. But if you take a Zulu warrior in full battle dress and compare him to a samurai in lacquered armor, nobody is gonna say the African guy is "cooler". But yes both cultures are ultimately primitive and barbaric.

The popularity of the katana is probably related to the fact that samurai used to like to kill unarmored civilians for fun (tsujigiri) as a way to terrorize the population and make them fear samurai. As a matter of fact they continued doing this even during WWII. Kind of insane how little things change over time.

Korea has no martial culture, the only thing they were historically interested was in copying everything that China did: namely memorizing Confucian classics and ignoring existential threats such as Mongol and Japanese invasions.
That has nothing to do with the absurdity of bringing up Japanese pop culture as a response their colossal failures in WWII.

World War 2 was more like if Tyson walked up to Floyd Mayweather, knocked him to the ground, then 3 pro boxers and 72 untrained niggers came out of the crawlspace from under the ring and all ganged up on Mike

The quality of the iron used in traditional katana making is already surpassed by Celts 800 BC. Tho I think Japs compensate their lack in metallurgy knowledge with a thought out smithing technic.

japanese martial culture looks cool cause of 30 years of anime and the sword being some sort of "hero" weapon. samurai armor doesnt look anything better than medieval armor or east asian armors. and the katana while cool isnt all that much cooler than other western/eastern swords.

SEA monkeys, for all their faults, are pretty hard to kill. Imagine going to the jungles in SEA and trying to figure out if you're shooting at a monkey or a vietcong nigga. if you guess wrong, you alert the actual vietcong to your location and if there's one thing monkeys know, it's the jungle. their natural brown features, short stature and simian appearance makes it hard to distinguish them. even the US couldn't handle the monkeys using gorilla warfare during vietnam. they had huge underground tunnel systems that no human male could enter because they were built for SEA who average 5'3'' and 90lbs.

bro look at the variety of bows and swords from Europe and the middle east over the centuries and then compare it to grolious nihon
they couldn't even into crossbows and siege engines, it's just a variation of a katana with a twist for 1000 years, and they were still using matchlocks in the 19th century
>tried harder

what kind of retardation is this even, katana is a superhuman weapon of mass destruction because of luck? japan lost WWII therefore an american cavalry saber>katana
so were zeros because japan lost, and the yamato battleship was a piece of shit as well if we follow this retarded way of thinking. germany lost, so the MG42 and Stg44 were total shit as well

The m1911 actually has katana level reputational controversy, because on one hand it's considered a legendarily influential and beautiful quintessentusl american firearm that is still relevant, and on the other hand it's popularity inspires iconoclasts that attack it for being boomer/fudd because it's too heavy and only holds 7 rounds and .45 acp isn't actually that much better than 9mm.
