I concede that most of my fellow countrymen are both geographically ignorant and disinterested, but the map-inclined minority isn’t strictly confined to the upper classes. Only a limited number of people on any socioeconomic stratum will be able to do this well, but I suspect that map autists are more widely distributed than you might guess. I personally know inner-city/ghetto black weebs who can tell you about the Tokugawa Shogunate, and people from working-class backgrounds in flyover nowheresvilles who can give you obsessive details about the Ottoman empire and its successors after the Great War.
Meanwhile, I’m an overeducated child of the coastal middle class, and while I can fill in all the countries on a blank map, I doubt more than a few of my overeducated middle class coastal peers could do the same. My wife certainly couldn’t, and she’s richer and better educated than I am. She’s just disinterested in maps. She could probably get five, though.
