Even in the 2010s, it was hard to make a Galaxy Angel thread on /jp/

But we still had a bunch of stragglers, and there was new translations coming out

But I guess now it's just straight up impossible

I played through the first game pretty recently
Itโ€™s very fun seeing the differences between the Anime and Game versions of the characters - they still manage to feel like they could be the same person, but the gap is very noticeable too (except for Vanilla I guess).
Whereas i prefer Anime!Milfeulle and Game!Ranpha over their counterparts, I think Forte was pretty good in both - I donโ€™t know which one I like better. The cleavage censorship got a bit silly though

My favourite is definitely Mint though. Sheโ€™s clever in a very fun way, and her ears work great as a charm point.
Anonymous No.49408359

Good choice, Mint's a very popular one

Yeah I think they do a good job conveying their personalities over both mediums, it's certainly a refreshing way to handle having both a VN and an anime.
The anime jokingly implies that there are hundreds of "Galaxy Angel" universes, so most figure that the game and anime take place in different ones.

It seems to me that the "modern /jp/ poster" seems to know quite little about the Galaxy Angel Series
So I will educate them

Galaxy Angel, or Project G.A. is an early 2000's 2D Space Opera series that encompasses many forms of media. It's main cast and unifier is the Galaxy Angels, also known as the Moon Angel Wing or Angel-tai.

It is a large, multi-media series consisting of
- Over 3 Visual Novels with Real-Time Tactics gameplay (PC, PS2, Xbox)
- 4+ anime seasons and OVAs
- Manga
- Pachinko series
- Spinoff games for the Gameboy Advance, PC, & PS2
- Character Drama CDs
- Multiple music CDs/Albums
- Radio Broadcasts & Information shows
- Crossovers with Di Gi Charat
- Merchandise
- Even a Musical on Ice

The series was made by Broccoli, also known for their hit otaku series "Di Gi Charat" and their GAMERS otaku merchandise stores over Japan. It's a very 2000s Akihabara vibe.
While it may seem like an older series, Broccoli has still surprisingly sold new merchandise on their website seemingly even into the 2020s.
If you like Milky Holmes or Teekyu! I think you will like the anime and the Visual Novel is a fun and immersive space tactical strategy game in itself.

The visual novels have full english patches and you can easily watch the anime on DVD/BR or mainstream streaming services, so I hope you check it out!

That's true, there's not a single unlikable girl as far as I can tell. I do wish Chitose got a little more time to shine between both the games and the anime. I'd also like to check out the sequel games at some point as I don't really have a good reading on the characters from that. Whether they're eventually translated or if I learn enough nihongo to understand it.
Anonymous No.49491206

The sequel continue the relationship you had in the first three games so it's worth a play for that alone. It's nice to get a continuation.

Galaxy Angel II only came out for the PS2 for some reason, so it's hard to translate. But you can manage with a screen capturer/aggregator if you hook up your PS2/TV and stream it to a computer and then use translation software. Not perfect but possible. I wish it was translated normally, but who knows.
Always a good reason to learn nihongo.

Yes, they are quite easy, but still very memorable. And not only is it three games long, but the story still continues into the sequel games. Not many VNs like that (although if anyone knows any, please let me know), so it makes quite a lovely experience, especially if you are attached to the characters.

How fortiudous.

Fucking braindead retard here, what advice is there for actually being able to run this game? I've managed to get a hold of all three games, Galaxy Angel, Eternal Lovers, and Moonlit Lovers, but attempting to run any of them results in frame rate going into the negatives on the main menu except for a brief period where I change which window is in focus, and the game suddenly runs at normal speed for all of a few frames - enough to select things in the main menu, and leave - but that's about it.
I haven't been super serious into trying something more because I've been killed by work, but was hoping to get the chance to play through this series at some point.

Hmmmm, slightly sub optimal. Pic related.
Managed to get me from negative frame rate to around 5 or so FPS. Installing the directX also boosted it to 7.5-10 FPS, but still hasn't fixed the weird text issues cropping off a part of each line or the atatatatatatatat.
Windowed mode I gave up on cause it responds with a half dozen "?????????" error reports before failing to find the config file..

>>49518313
Yep, looked it up in the font manager and checked in wordpad, it's definitely there.
It's been a bit, I don't think I grabbed it from the mega, but I'm definitely saving that link for later in case i brick the version i'm messing with. Pretty sure I spent ages waiting for the one seeder to finish the job some time ago.

Alright, Voodoo attempted. Seemed like the frame rate might've gone up to 11 FPS or I might just be losing my mind.
It did seem to run slightly smoother in the main menu, but the text and atatatatat is still turbo fucked. What's worse, is that it lags a ton to bring up every single text pane, to the point that it's a solid 10-30 seconds before the first text is able to properly display.
I also feel like closing the game takes longer with each passing attempt.

Onto figuring out how to set up a virtual machine, then.

What OS are you using?
I know there seems to be an issue with getting it to run on Windows 10. I just played it on Windows 7 and had no real issue.

I think there's a patch from Broccoli you need to install. It should be hosted on some forum or the pastebin. Your DirectX also might need an update. There should be an installer in the game folder. Make sure your Applocale is set to Japanese Unicode and the time & settings of your PC is also set to Japanese. If you are using a newer OS without Applocale, you should be able to use Locale Emulator instead. You can download that off github.
You seem to have the correct font, so that should be fine.
I also think you might need to use a different startup icon than the normal one. In the game folder, there should be several different icons with a separate angel on them. Like one has Milfuelle's face, one with Forte's, etc. Try them all.

Some say messing around with 16 and 32 bit options and fullscreen/windowed helps. Try switching them up and then exiting the game, then reopening them with the different options.

Don't feel discouraged. Playing visual novels and 2D games in the 2000s on english PCs was always a challenge. Most older games are a pain to get running. Screwing around with options, patches, ascii, locales, etc. was to be expected

Yeah, the latest version gets flagged for some reason but older ones don't. I know you already tried it but for anyone else lurking, v2.85 doesn't set off defender.

>>49518644
I'm assuming you read the install instructions but if you didn't, the installation is a bit different than other programs.
>open dgVoodoo2_xx.zip
>open the MS folder
>open the x86 folder
>copy D3D8.dll, D3D9.dll, D3Dlmm.dll and DDraw.dll to the same folder as GA.exe
>overwrite any files (make a backup first if you want)
>run GA.exe
>if there's a watermark on the bottom right then it's working
>close the game and copy dgVoodooCpl.exe and dgVoodoo.conf to the game folder
>open dgVoodooCpl.exe, go the the DirectX tab and uncheck the watermark box on the bottom
>apply, OK and run the game again
It should just work at this point but if it doesn't you can try messing with the dgvoodoo settings until it does
You could also try running GA in windowed mode by running GA_Starter.exe and picking ใ‚ฆใ‚ฃใƒณใƒ‰ใ‚ฆ ใƒขใƒผใƒ‰ (W)

It's a french pastry spelled "mille-feuille," usually known as a "Napoleon" in the US but in Japan it goes by the French name and is romanized as Milfeulle

In Japan, the food has gone full "meme" and now comes in all sorts of shapes and styles but still referred to as "milfeulle." Recently round "milfeulle" pastries by a company called GARIGUETTE have gone viral in Japan.

I'm also happy about the recent new merchandise. It's nice to receive new stuff from old series.
I also was a bit iffy on the Di Gi Charat comeback. I was real excited at first, but wasn't too happy about the new cast editions. It's curious how they somehow thought adding new characters would be a good thing when that really screwed over Galaxy Angel in the past. I was still happy to get it though, and wouldn't mind more. The youtube shorts were interesting.

Now an additional game release? A fourth installment to the original trio and maybe guests from Rune would be a dream come true.

So which Vanilla do you prefer? They're both great but they also differ the most between the angel brigade's respective anime and game counterparts
Anonymous No.49706559 >>49711406

Obviously I like both Vanillas
Generally I'd say I like the VN version a tad more though. She has a very gentle, kind, and delicate demeanor that makes you want to protect that smile. She shows more emotion too. I also think the VN seemed to handled her religious side better.

In the anime, she almost seems a bit "off-the-rocker" and emotionless at first. Mint in the second episode (in her typical style) even says to watch out about her. But I really liked that Vanilla too, it's a very interesting take and I think it fits well into the cast. Everyone in the anime is made to be a little bit crazy compared to their VN counterparts.
It made it special when she actually smiles and when she shows that she deeply cares about people and their well being. Her anime personality seems to be toned down a bit more though in the later seasons. I preferred the earlier anime Vanilla, although I guess you could consider it character growth.

More or less my sentiments.
I think as the anime went on she goes from quiet girl to resident weirdo, never to a degree that she feels ruined anyways. I suppose it's only inevitable as the show ramps up its absurdity. Also, the green frills on her outfit in her game design serve as a nice accent and I wish she got to keep those for the anime.

WRONG

So was there ever an official statement for why Tact doesn't appear in the anime, even as a small cameo? Broccoli not allowing Madhouse to use him? His (and in a way, the player's) role as a romantic interest to the angels being diminished? Him simply not fitting into the cast of multicolored weirdos?
Anonymous No.49862813
Anonymous No.49868110
Not on my watch.
Anonymous No.49872728
>>49861184
Not that I know of
I guess they don't want to have serious "romantic" implications or whathaveyou in the anime, but they still have light romance plots every so often. I feel Tact could be a good stand in for a side character that viewers wouldn't get too upset at, but they tend to always use joke characters instead. Like the romance plots tend to use a younger Volcott, NORMAD, a rice cooker, either of the two young boys they randomly introduced as rivals, etc. But why use them when you have Tact?

Earlier Galaxy Angel episodes attempt to follow a plot and lore structure but the later ones lean heavily into parodies or absurdity with the characters fulfilling certain rolls without any continuity. I think Tact would be fine for this.
Like if you take the last special Episode 19 of Galaxy Angel Z/Season 2 where Forte meets up with an "old friend" for one last dangerous mission, which is like some brown hair guy who never shows his face, I think if they used Tact there instead the episode would be better off. They can do the same thing where they don't show his face, but viewers could tell by his blue hair and voice actor. And then just recycle him because they recycle side characters all the time elsewhere.
