I think it's got something to do with how he did shading and highlights.
The newer art feels a lot more flat, and is missing some details in texture that his physical art has.
I say has because I remember seeing some Reimus he did on wood for a sign at either Comiket or Reitaisai some time ago, and it seemed pretty comparible to his IN work and the like.

I think it's just a lack of knowledge about how to use digital art tools to their full extent. He's still got it with traditional, pic related was made in 2022 for some festival and looks pretty good even though it's in the new style

His new style is admittedly much more simplistic; it works better with traditional art. I actually suspect that the mof nitori pictured is actually made with digital art tools of some kind that emulates watercolor/pencils

to add on to your post, i think that there's some digital textures and overlays he used to spam that he now chooses to omit. it's especially apparent on portraits in th8, see pic rel

I prefer reimu but he always draw her with beautiful faces

I've always considered Mokou as good. Not "soulful" or good for ZUN's standard, but simply good. Different from mainstream styles, but the linework is good, the pose works and I find coloring very appealing.

Recently, he's been drawing Reimu with a really defined body outline.

ZUN art are religious icons.
Religious icons are drawn in a way not to provoke the carnal desire, and only to reflect a higher reality.

Poor wording on my side, should have used "as good as". It imo looks pretty, but it looks better on the rest of the IN cast and on Nitori and Suwako (who might have the effect to look water-like).

Same, doubt anyone disagrees on that, Touhou has a lot of patterns here and there that add a bit of messiness and uniqueness.

idk th8 and th9 might be the sweetspot of uniqueness and cleanness, since 6-7 feel to weird to most people and 10 and beyond is were people consider he lost his touch( some people still love 10 tho)

Last time that noise texture was used seems to be with Tojiko now that I checked, which is fitting since those textures are used quite a lot for clouds and mist. Her texture is way darker but it makes sense because it probably represents thunderclouds.

i've never noticed that they're the only ones with it in 10. it's definitely not nearly as flattering on tojiko, that's a much rougher looking portrait than i remember.

Yeah, TD is where stuff went full flat, her dress would looks fine if the ofuda didn't look that flat. But of course everything else looks lifeless (which I could exuse for maybe the 3 dead characters of TD but not the rest)

I assume they where drawn on paper, but also edited digitally. Not sure if he painted them physically or if he really put some effort into making them look like non digital, maybe he mixed a bit of both because indeed Shizuna looks painted traditionally. But idk, maybe I need to learn how to paint in old ZUN style myself since it doesn't seem like he will anytime soon.

At first, he used to actually draw the character sprites and art on paper, scan it, then digitally colour it in. There's one interview I remember where you can see on his desk one of the uncoloured ending slides to TH8
Then starting from Touhou 13 he switched over to digital, cuts out the whole scanning process and makes it much easier
Which actually brings it back to the AI background thing, before he used to buy stock photo packs, browse them for some neat ones, slam them through 8 photoshop filters and composite them together. Now he's using AI to save time browsing so he can get to slamming the images through 8 photoshop filters sooner

Ironically there was a very similar outrage to him switching over to digital as there was for him using AI in the backgrounds of TH20

Another thing to note, these days the art gives off more of a doll impression than actually looking like people, especially due to the lack of shading. Here comes my crackpot theory:
The disk title "Dolls in Pseudo-Paradise" is a very fitting description of what Gensokyo is. Alice as a doll maker is basically ZUN’s stand-in and divine avatar (“Team Shanghai Alice”) and Gensokyo itself becomes ZUN’s grand dollhouse. Every character is merely a puppet animated by his design; never acting on their own will, but performing as ZUN’s marionettes in an idyllic yet hollow paradise.

Speaking of beer, the art ZUN made for the Akiba Beer Fair needs mentioning. Apparently the girl’s name is “Beerko”-chan
