Stone-Stacking Contest
Eika Ebisu is a stillborn spirit, and she’s something of an inspiration to the other spirits at the Sai no Kawara. On this day, just like any other day, she was making full use of her ability and her dexterous fingers to stack a tower of stones. According to Eika, the trick to getting the highest tower is to be bold while maintaining a steady hand. The jellyfish spirits had gathered around her to cheer her on. But why does she stack stones, you may ask? Because they’re there.

Stacking stones may seem like a fun little game, but it takes on a whole different meaning when done at the Sai no Kawara. Children who pass away before their parents are forbidden from crossing the Sanzu River. So, instead, the spirits of these children remain on the Sanzu River’s bank (the Sai no Kawara), and stack stone towers, which represent pagodas, to pray for their parents’ good health.
“This stone’s for father, and this stone’s for mother…”
No matter how desperately they stack stones, in the end, their towers will always collapse. And then, they start all over again.

One stone, two stones, three stones… The click-clatter of stones blended with the sound of pinwheels spinning in the wind to form a tranquil melody on the riverbank. Eika had a determined look on her face as she focused on winning the stone-stacking contest. She was so focused she didn’t even notice that she had an audience.
“What are you doing lounging around here again? Don’t you have work to do, Komachi?”
“Aww, don’t say that. I’m on my break.”
Komachi Onozuka and Urumi Ushizaki both work on the Sanzu River, but they weren’t working then. Instead, they sat on a large rock, watching over Eika. While they may not have been all that interested in the contest, they seemed content to watch Eika and the other spirits enjoying themselves.

“Woohoo! A new record!”
Before long, the stone stack grew so high that it towered over Eika. But it seems she wasn’t done just yet. She crouched down and started to look for the perfect stone to lay on top.
“Wow, that’s really impressive.”
“You said it. It might even be bigger than that Dunkleosteus I caught the other day.”
The two onlookers couldn’t help but comment on Eika’s magnificent stone-stacking skills.
“But why is she so obsessed with stacking stones…?”
Neither of them knew the answer, so they turned to ask Eika directly―

“All right, now for the next stone. I know I can still make it taller!”
“…Well, I guess it doesn’t really matter as long as she’s happy.”
“Right. That’s what’s most important.”
Eika continued to challenge herself to build the tallest tower as the shinigami and the ushi-oni watched on, choosing not to disturb her.
“Who knew Sai no Kawara could be so peaceful, huh?”
“It’s quite nice though, isn’t it?”
“I guess.”
“Oh, right, before I forget… Wanna buy some fish? I caught some really big ones today.”
“Sounds good. I was just thinking about what I was going to do for dinner.”
“Hey, what’re you talking about fish for? Our stone towers are way cooler than fish!”
