I don't know how it is in Japan but they seem to be in a general decline, with a few peaks here and there. That's probably the general idol industry, though. I get the feeling that finding new idols with the necessary talent and attitude is getting near impossible. Their recent single is like #2 on Oricon. As long as UFG/H!P is around, MM will be around. Their legacy makes them too big to fail now.
J=J and Angerme seem to be uninteresting right now, I think. J=J got a new member recently who is a good singer but looks kinda plain jane.
Karin is still active in M-line. So is Manaka Inaba. They're both doing really well, I think. Karin released an album not too long ago that's pretty good.

He identifies with female protagonist and he credits him reading so much shoujo manga as why he could write songs from a female POV. In other words, the idols he produces are live action shoujo manga characters he created in his imagination. He sees a girl, then he designs or creates a semi fictional heroine character from his vision or imagination and writes songs imagining about that world or the girl's POV.

If you read some of Maki's writings about tsunku she says directly that Tsunku created her character when she was in Hello! Project. "Morning Musume Goto Maki" was purely a tsunku creation as she said it. She didnt say so directly, but I think a big reason she left was to reclaim her own idenity and direction as a singer, person (and now artist). She said she didnt even listen to any music for herself until after she graduated morning musume.

Tsunku probably just really likes living in a shoujo Manga world and he sees real idols girls as actors for his little imagination shoujo dramas he day dreams about. And the world is a much better place because of it.

Not these days. Tsunku is super creative and dare to say a genius. He has a big imagination, but sometimes his vision was over baring(applying characters he created to girls who didnt agree or didnt fit his vision). Now days the office just doesn't have creatives like that anymore. A big reason why the new gens are so boring and dry. The girls themselves aren't creative enough to form their own character. Very few of them that is. Ma Chan being one of them that created a rememberable character by design or accident Most of the upfront girls just do whatever the staff or management in the room thst day tell them to do. "Stand there." "Stand here." ,"smile" , but beyond that upfront seems to reallt lack a vision or creative person that can craft personal for the members to play off of. They have no one like Ano. They got rid of all the rough-around-the-edges, but interesting girls. Or as Maki said, "modern hello project is like an all girls private school." "My time was like a public school where you had all these characters walking around". In other words, The office made modern H!P boring.

Despite Tsunku's control quirks you can't deny that he knew what he was doing when he created Ayaya as an idol character. Shes an example of Tsunku's vision and imagination working out perfectly for both Ayaya and the concept.
The other extreme is Kago. Kago is a failed Tsunku character, because Kago herself sabotaged her own character that he made for her. If she just would have shut up and behaved her and Tsuji could have did the W thing then reinvented themselves after is was done. Kago couldn't wait. She rebelled and caused U!F much headaches. Shes part of the reason why U!F only hires boring safe girls now. They don't want another rebellious kago.

I take that back. Yes the office is probably pushing for a few general archetype roles, but their understanding of the roles is shallow or only "hair style" deep. They just don't have someone like Tsunku who is day dreaming about all these girls as these shoujo manga heroines like tsunku did. Taunku was able to create new characters that were unique. At most modern H!P seems to have very general niches like "she's the loud one", "she's the sexy one" , "she's the cute one" ect. Nothing like Tsunku's detailed story head canon.

If you want a good idea of how Tsunku things of some of golden era members read his Love Theory book. He breaks down each girl into his archetypes. Some of this stuff is really accurate. A very interesting read if you want to get inside Tsunku's mind. He sees the world very differently then you might think.

I think the smart ones or less socially unaware ones that don't give a F will be the ones who won't hide their quirks. Some members in the past crafted an "on screen" persona, while others are just more naturally quirky. The age of the youtuber really shows how boring some of these members really are. Now days you have a ton of girls on youtube who self produce and who have a natural apt for being on camera and showing their personality without hesitation. If you compare some of these hello project girls, they are very average in comparison and just don't have the personality or charisma. These new generation of YouTubers are self made. So they are very self aware of their own image and personality they show off. U!H should be looking to hire girls who have an interest in being influencers or have some sort of personality. The old days of these girls waiting around for someone like Tsunku or The Office to assign them a character is over. Hiring boring girls is worse than hiring a girl who cant dance or sing. Its about show business and entertainment. If these members aren't entertaining they fail as an entertainer.

I remember someone in Morning Musume said that Mizuki was really funny off camera and a dork. But they asked her to be funny like that on camera and she said "No way! I don't want to make that image". So mizuki thought it was better and more entertaining to keep a proper appearance than to be entertaining. That's why she will be forgotten in a few years while those old Utaban videos will still get views 20 years from now. I like mizuki, but she rarely showed any quirky personality or was entertaining on screen. SAD
