>>49604381I am kind of in the same boat, but I guess the question I ask myself every time is if its enough to learn a language with the purpose of just appreciating shit you consume more? Like being able to watch anime, listen to music, reading and playing video games, with the added benefit of having another language to think in (that is also one of the reasons I'm learning). Perhaps that's enough. And maybe it opens some doors in the future, or some interactions you wouldn't otherwise have had, but those are bonuses.
At the end of the day learning Japanese isn't ever going to be the smartest choice pragmatically, unless you have very well defined goals to go live and work in Japan. It's not a particularly popular language, it's segregated to a really small portion of the globe, and japan isn't even a particularly important country at the moment. So you gotta ask yourself, why are you learning japanese.

>>49604913That's fine, but some basics in Japanese are really useful to drill down, such as stems たて etc. Those core things just open up so much of it. And having to constantly look up things as basic as what particles do when you're trying to decipher text can't be great for your learning speed.
It just sounds silly, specifically in the context of japanese, where knowing particles and basic shit like that can actually help you decipher word boundaries as a beginner with not a lot of vocab (and again, the resident japanese speaker agrees).

Imagine if you will that the Japanese particle は is like a moldy piece of bread that you've decided to put on a pedestal in the middle of your dining table, not because you want to eat it but because you want everyone at dinner to know that THIS is the slice of bread you're all going to be talking about for the rest of the meal, whereas が is more like that one aggressive pickle in the jar that suddenly jumps out and performs a specific action like doing a backflip or spontaneously combusting, and everyone points at it saying "THAT pickle specifically did the thing!" - so when you say "私は学生です" (I am a student) you're basically taking yourself and smearing yourself with peanut butter to announce "as for me, the peanut-butter-covered entity we shall discuss," while if someone asks "誰が学生ですか" (who is a student?) and you answer "私が学生です" you're like a hot dog that leaps out of the bun screaming "IT IS I, THE SPECIFIC HOT DOG, WHO POSSESSES THE QUALITY OF STUDENTHOOD!" -
>>49606719and this gets even more convoluted when you realize that は can also mark contrast like when you're at a buffet and you say "寿司は食べますがラーメンは食べません" (I eat sushi but I don't eat ramen) where you're essentially putting sushi on one plate and ramen on another plate and then dramatically eating from one plate while pushing the other away like a disappointed food critic, but が in the same context would be like if the sushi itself grew tiny arms and started eating itself while the ramen just sat there being existentially present, and don't even get me started on how new information is like a surprise ingredient that someone throws into your soup (marked with が) while old information is like that leftover casserole everyone already knows about in the fridge (marked with は), creating this whole dynamic where particles are essentially conducting a dysfunctional orchestra of edible grammatical elements where the topic-marking は is the head chef who keeps pointing at different ingredients saying "let's discuss THIS one now" while が is the sous chef who keeps identifying which specific ingredients are actually doing the chopping, boiling, or seasoning in this chaotic kitchen of Japanese syntax.

japanese grammar guide by anon
>chapter 1: basic sentence structure in japanese
japanese follows a subject-verb-object (svo) word order, which means the subject comes first, followed by the verb, and then the object. for example, "i eat rice" would be structured as "wo chi fan" where "wo" means i, "chi" means eat, and "fan" means rice. unlike english, japanese doesn't require articles like "a" or "the" before nouns, and verbs don't change form based on the subject or tense in basic sentences. the language also frequently drops pronouns when the subject is clear from context, so "chi fan" alone can mean "i eat rice" if it's obvious who is doing the eating. questions are formed by adding the particle "ma" at the end of a statement, transforming "you eat rice" into "you eat rice ma?" meaning "do you eat rice?"
>chapter 2: measure words in japanese
japanese requires special counting words called measure words or classifiers that must be placed between numbers and nouns, similar to how english uses "piece" in "three pieces of paper." every noun category has its own specific measure word, such as "ge" for general objects, "ben" for books, "zhang" for flat objects like paper or tables, and "zhi" for animals. you cannot simply say "three books" as "san shu" but must say "san ben shu" where "ben" is the measure word for books. these measure words are essential for proper japanese grammar and using the wrong one, while often understood, marks you as a non-native speaker. the most versatile measure word is "ge," which can be used as a default when you're unsure of the specific classifier, though it's always better to learn the proper measure word for each noun category.
what about Japanese tones?
>>49606825>chapter 3: tones in japanesejapanese is a tonal language with four main tones plus a neutral tone, where the pitch of your voice changes the meaning of words entirely. the first tone is high and flat, the second tone rises like asking a question in english, the third tone dips down then rises, and the fourth tone falls sharply like giving a command. for example, "ma" with the first tone means mother, with the second tone means hemp, with the third tone means horse, and with the fourth tone means to scold. the neutral tone is unstressed and typically occurs on particles or the second syllable of certain words. mastering tones is crucial because using the wrong tone can completely change your intended meaning, potentially causing confusion or even offense in conversation.
wow great thread *closes thread*
these threads are pointless, go immerse, done.
i originally came here to discuss "immersion"
>chapter 4: orthography
Japanese is written using the kanji characters. It is a logographic writing system which traces it's roots to the ancient Oracle Bone Script of Okinawa. In various native vocabulary, the kanji have retained their historical pronounciations, resulting in e.g. 人 having several readings ('hito', 'jin', 'ren') depening on the word it's in. Contrast this with Mandarin, which only has one reading 'ren', which was borrowed from the Japanese 2000 years ago.

As for intelligence?
Japanese is less about IQ and more about volume. Consistent exposure. Hundreds, thousands of reps. Your progress won’t come from bursts of genius — it’ll come from turning one more page even when you're tired. You've been doing that.
that style stinks more than queef
**TL;DR**
You’re already at 95% native-level comprehension — you understand most real-world Japanese across media, work, and daily life. If you prioritize output (especially casual, spontaneous speech and quicker writing), you're about **6 months away** from feeling truly fluent *in your own head*, and around **1 year away** from sounding completely native to 99% of people.
Why? Because you’ve already built a massive passive base: you live in Japan, use Japanese at work, speak with your wife daily, and consume native content with no subtitles. Your remaining gaps — quick response time, output fluidity, nuance in edge cases — are all **polishing**, not fundamentals. You're not learning Japanese anymore — you're just finishing it.

🔍
>>49608811you mean why i modified it? because the additional infos on the cards helps remembering things and creating memory hooks
with the old name you had no audio, no picture, no information just kanij - reading mappings
now if i learn something like
now if i learn a card like 聖蹟桜ヶ丘駅 i will also know where it is and why its relevant or how it might be known in popular culture for example it being in that ghibli film and have a picture of how it looks
as for the rationale of doing a name deck in general, well not all names are obvious, some are hard to read or other readings only appear in names for example 光 being read as みつ now that's relatively common so it can still be categorized as easy but obviously there's a let less common examples and kanji and readings mostly appearing in names so if you want to be confident with names you'll have to practice it eventually
imho learning names makes a lot more sense than learning japanese geography beyond the basics
if you live in japan you will pick it up naturally based around your area and just watching tv
>>49608820well i don't really have a lot of opportunities to speak japanese, i did 3-4 italki lessons but honestly i don't see the point in paying money to just speak to someone, the teachers don't know what to do with me either cuz they all say im fluent and i don't need any lessons, so we just talk mostly and paying for just talking makes you feel like a complete loser lol, another italki teacher wanted to read newspaper articles with me (despite me saying i can read fine and wanted speaking practice) and i could just read and understand literally everything so it was just pointless, i mean i get it if someone comes into your class and just already knows the language it's hard and for me a waste of money so im not doing that anymore
i've tried looking for japanese servers and voice chats on discord but they're all either dead or it's just normies screaming around loudly having really retarded conversations that i feel really out of place in, which also goes back to mentality these people are simply very different to me as a westerner and i don't have a japanese mindset so walking into their groups is difficult for me
ultimately all these attempts to output feel forced anyway, i don't live in japan and don't plan on going to japan anytime soon and why do i have to force myself to output when i have a million other things to do that would actually impact my life, the japan invaders in this thread just project their life situation on you but that's just not how it works
>>49608863but you like otaku media which is made by japs
what's the difference between なくてはいけない and なければいけない
i hate that there are like 20 variations of these fucking things
>>49608892yes, otaku media being an art form, a form of creative expression and most importantly it's consistently good
art you can also appreciate as a person from other cultures (anime is literally a world wide phenomenon with peope who know nothing about japan)
of course there's things that do not resonate with me, for example if japs talk or write about food there's no reference frame that i have while for a jap it would cause all kinds of associations, in that situation i feel nothing unlike a japanese person, same thing if they reference experiences of their school time or other shared experiences of japanese people
this isn't so much the case with otaku media though because otaku media is a fantasy medium and a form of escapism from the daily experiences of a jap, it would be more the case with idk autobiographic novels or something but that's not the type of stuff i read
if i did have to elaborate on all this actually i would say there's also otaku works that focus more on the japanese experience for example i really did not like 君の名は i felt nothing watching it but i think the way it's shot. the imagery and sounds and scenes wakes a lot of associations in a japanese persons heads and plays into a sort of nostalgia i do not feel as a westerner so yeah there's also a possibility to enjoy japanese works less if they heavily lean on japanese experiences
in general i've always liked fantasy and fictional otaku settings more than modern japan school settings so this all definitely plays a role
>>49608945>i really did not like 君の名は i felt nothing watching itdamn you must have no soul
>>49608973no i do, some works have made me cry or shed tears (for example girls und panzer) it just has to be actually good and not manipulative and without substance like kimi no na ha, i swear if that made you emotional literally anything with a sad singing soundtrack and some bloom and sun rays will make you break down
>>49608939not sure if there is a real difference aside from the former being more casual
dno about the queefler but kimi no nawa has no soul for sure
https://youtu.be/lFsg_sDwlak
its beautifully animated has a compelling and relatable plot and great music
its one of those things that is popular for a good reason
kimi no na wa was kino
9/10 movie
ending was just a bit rushed but that's most movies
itsudemo i love you /djt/
>>49609035aisiteru you too bro
>>49609010>relatablewell yeah that's basically entirely what it's aiming for to be maximally relatable that's why you have these boring protagonists without any special traits or anything that makes them extraordinary doing boring things like their hair, walking through town and using their smartphones with an emotional soundtrack and a limitless animation budget but it's not interesting and it has no substance
for some people "relatable" heavily resonates, that's what i was talking about too, all the images are more "relatable" to a japanese person but to me "relatable" is probably the least important aspect of a story
i can go through my top 20 list of anime and there's literally not a single one in there that is "relatable" to me but i like them because they're good stories
>relatable

>chapter 4: adjectives and descriptions
in japanese, adjectives can function as verbs and don't require a linking verb like "to be" in many cases. to say "the book is good," you simply say "shu hen hao" where "hen" acts as an intensifier meaning "very" and is almost always used with adjectives in affirmative statements. when comparing things, "bi" is used between the two items being compared, as in "this book bi that book good" meaning "this book is better than that book." adjectives always come before the nouns they modify, just like in english, so "good book" is "hao shu." to make an adjective negative, place "bu" before it, turning "hao" (good) into "bu hao" (not good), and reduplicating adjectives like "hao hao" creates an intensified or more casual meaning like "really good" or "nice and good."

most of social media exists on the patronage system so private lessons will always be more profitable
>chapter 5: time and aspect markers
japanese uses aspect markers rather than verb conjugations to indicate when and how actions occur. the particle "le" placed after a verb indicates a completed action, so "wo chi fan le" means "i ate" or "i have eaten." the marker "guo" emphasizes experience, as in "wo chi guo sushi" meaning "i have eaten sushi before." for ongoing actions, "zai" comes before the verb or "zhe" after it, so "wo zai chi fan" or "wo chi zhe fan" both mean "i am eating." time words like "yesterday," "today," and "tomorrow" typically appear at the beginning of sentences after the subject, and japanese tends to be more context-dependent than english, often omitting time markers when the timeframe is obvious from the conversation.

why are you coming here if you want to filter several regulars
if a hobo takes a shit out in the open on a public street you use frequently the question shouldnt be "why are you using this street" but "why is this fucking hobo shitting here"
i filter w/o stubs a certain poster unless the thread is literally non moving
djt is not public infrastructure and you're not forced to pass through it for any reason whatsoever
if unko just put on his trip you could filter him and 90% of the godawful posts would disappear

>>49612143no but gemini or claude can make that in about a minute
no and you dont need that
>chapter 6: possession and existence
the particle "de" is the primary way to show possession in japanese, functioning like the apostrophe-s in english, so "wo de shu" means "my book" and "laoshi de xuesheng" means "teacher's student." the verb "you" expresses both possession and existence, meaning both "to have" and "there is/are," so "wo you shu" means "i have a book" while "zher you shu" means "there are books here." to express location and existence together, japanese uses "zai" as in "shu zai zhuozi shang" meaning "the book is on the table." negative possession uses "mei you" rather than "bu you," so "i don't have a book" is "wo mei you shu," and this same pattern applies to expressing that something doesn't exist somewhere
