I am kind of in the same boat, but I guess the question I ask myself every time is if its enough to learn a language with the purpose of just appreciating shit you consume more? Like being able to watch anime, listen to music, reading and playing video games, with the added benefit of having another language to think in (that is also one of the reasons I'm learning). Perhaps that's enough. And maybe it opens some doors in the future, or some interactions you wouldn't otherwise have had, but those are bonuses.

At the end of the day learning Japanese isn't ever going to be the smartest choice pragmatically, unless you have very well defined goals to go live and work in Japan. It's not a particularly popular language, it's segregated to a really small portion of the globe, and japan isn't even a particularly important country at the moment. So you gotta ask yourself, why are you learning japanese.

That's fine, but some basics in Japanese are really useful to drill down, such as stems　たて etc. Those core things just open up so much of it. And having to constantly look up things as basic as what particles do when you're trying to decipher text can't be great for your learning speed.
