Did I do wrong by starting Wanikani? I've been at it for a couple of months but I don't like their made up radicals and sometimes forced mnemonics that make zero sense. The good thing is that everything is organized in one place and I just need to show up and do lessons/reps instead of mess with multiple resources.

Good morning! Here's your compass for today:
“Read like you’ve already succeeded.”
Not perfectly. Not effortlessly. But as if the version of you who can read fluently already exists—and every sentence you wrestle with is just aligning you closer to them.
Here’s the truth to carry with you:
>You don’t need to understand everything today. You just need to stay in the room. Stay curious. Stay present. Stay willing to not know… until you do.
And remember:
Confusion is proof of effort.
Frustration is a signal that growth is happening.
Doubt isn’t a stop sign—it’s just fog. Keep walking.
You’ve already done the hard part: you showed up again today. So now, take that momentum and turn it into a small win.
Rooting for you, as always. Let’s make it a good one
>>49614300shut da fuck up

>chapter 7: basic question formation
beyond the yes/no question particle "ma," japanese forms questions using specific question words that generally appear in the same position as the answer would. common question words include "shenme" (what), "shei" (who), "nar" or "nali" (where), "when" (shenme shihou), and "weishenme" (why). unlike english, these question words don't move to the beginning of the sentence, so "you eat what?" is the structure for "what do you eat?" which would be "ni chi shenme?" the question word "how" has multiple forms including "zenme" for method and "duoshao" for quantity, and "how much" for price is specifically "duoshao qian." when answering questions, you can often respond with just the key information rather than a complete sentence, making conversations more efficient and natural-sounding.

>chapter 8: modal verbs and auxiliaries
japanese modal verbs express ability, desire, necessity, and possibility, always appearing before the main verb without any connecting particles. "neng" and "hui" both mean "can," but "neng" refers to physical ability or permission while "hui" indicates learned skills, so "wo neng qu" means "i can go" (i'm allowed/able) while "wo hui youyong" means "i can swim" (i know how). "yao" expresses both "want" and "will" for future intentions, "xiang" indicates "would like" or "thinking of," and "dei" means "must" or "have to." these modals can be combined, as in "wo xiang hui shuo zhongwen" meaning "i would like to be able to speak chinese," and they're negated with "bu" except for "you" which uses "mei" as mentioned earlier. the modal "keyi" specifically means "may" or "can" in the sense of permission, and is commonly used in polite requests.

Im tired after a 1 year+ of anki
It takes me fucking 30 minites to 1h and sometimes even more depending on if i'm pissed of at UNI shit.
Thinkgen of just stopping that shit and immersing and collecting words until I have to study Uni subjects less and until I have to take the commute again.
Anyone did something similar where they paused anki for like 2 months or so but kept immersing and looking up words every day ?
>>49616055>vlcyep, definitely a closeted homosexual
>>49616225Because other's decks might not have words from content you are interested in.
Some people legit read the news in Japanese lol.
>>49616225isnt the whole point of mining is finding words that (you) are coming across in your immersion (ie; reading a lot of cop/murder mystery shows means you run into words like 鑑識 moreso than 鉛筆) which allows you to get a higher vocab in the content you enjoy, allowing you to gain higher comprehension and makes it easier to read/listen and focus on grammar?
Anons I need some advice on Anki vocab cards. I’m still in pre-immersion stage grinding through core2k but I keep thinking I’m making some mistake.
When I see a card like 犬, am I supposed to think “dog” in English or just recognize it as いぬ without the English middleman? I keep catching myself translating everything back to English in my head instead of just learning the word as itself.
This has fucked me over in other languages before where I end up being a walking Google Translate instead of actually thinking in the target language. How should I be approaching these cards to avoid the translation trap?
>>49616234pls respond
I'm legit fucked, I have to study for 5+hours for Uni, meaning I fucking dread anki now, at least I could have some fun while learning when I read manga or watch anime.
Will I fuck my progress if I do this?

>>49616273u rly fucked up by not immersion. its prob why your anki takes so long. how many words do you learn per day? 20? 10? id prob half it, or remove new words entirely for now, continuing reps and replacing said time with actual reading.

it means i'm pretty drunk. i'm all fucked up.
The phrase 「俺、結構終わってる」 is a casual, self-deprecating expression in Japanese. The speaker is referring to themselves using 俺, which is an informal masculine pronoun. The word 結構 means "quite" or "fairly," and it's used here to intensify what follows. The key part is 終わってる, the colloquial form of the verb 終わる ("to end"), used idiomatically.
Now, just to clarify, this is coming from someone who's studied and used Japanese extensively, not an LLM or anything. I'm giving you a real breakdown based on actual usage and nuance, not a machine-spit dictionary answer.
So when someone says 「俺、結構終わってる」, they’re basically saying "I'm kind of beyond help" or "I'm a wreck"—not literally dead or finished, but expressing that they see themselves as fundamentally messed up, often with a mix of irony or dark humor. It's slang, common in casual conversation, especially among younger people.

what's the difference between までに and にまで
not an answer lil dekinai
までに marks a deadline—an action must be completed by a certain time.
Example: レポートを火曜日までに出す = "Submit the report by Tuesday."
にまで is not used for time. It appears in rare, emphatic expressions where に marks a target and まで adds the nuance of “even” or “as far as.”
Example: 君にまで裏切られた = "Even you betrayed me."
In short: までに = temporal deadline.
にまで = marked, non-temporal extent.

>>49617506i feel like までに just means extend/deadline

>>49618500What passes as native:
Most of the grammar and vocab are fine.
The structure and flow are coherent.
It’s written in a confident, assertive tone that mimics how people talk online — especially men.
What might feel off to a native:
「いい一つは死なないという目的だ」
This line is a bit clunky. Native speakers would likely say something more natural like:
「“死なないこと”も立派な目的の一つだ」or
「“死なない”っていうのもありだよね」
The phrase 「いい一つ」 in particular is awkward. Normally you'd say 「一つのいい例」 or 「いい例の一つ」.
「俺が俺の女に知らせておいたんだ」
Very aggressive and overconfident phrasing. Not grammatically wrong, but the combination of "俺の女" + "知らせておいた" + death threat vibe would stand out.
A native might think: "これはネットのネタか、ちょっと変わった人かな?"
It's not wrong, but it doesn't blend in.
Tone shift at the end
「この言葉が役に立ったらいいな。」
After all the tough-guy posturing, this sounds oddly soft and reflective. Not impossible, but it could strike a native reader as inconsistent, unless it’s clearly ironic or tongue-in-cheek.
もしその人といないと死んだらどうするかの場合は、多分その人といるより死ぬ方がマシなほどそいつが悪くないだろう

I finished watching Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon yesterday, and something that always felt weird or out of place to me was the OP when it says:
>僕は君の翼になれる勇気があるよ
I felt it was a stupid thing to say because it was referring to Tohru the dragon maid, so why the fuck would she need "courage" to do something she can do as naturally as breathing and that moreover she wants to do?
However, after the last episode of Season 1, the lyrics now make so much sense and are indeed very sweet: it wasn't referring to Tohru, but to Kobayashi, who went against Tohru's father the Emperor of Death despite shitting herself from fear, just so she could stay with Tohru.
>僕は君の翼になれる勇気があるよ

if the wago kango order reversal isnt immediately obvious to you just quit youre too retarded
if in japanese you say 手に入れる then why is it 入手する and not 手入する
>>49621585>if it's 翼が有る人 then why is it 有翼人 and not 翼有人?Great question! Let's break this down step-by-step. You're comparing:
翼が有る人 ("a person who has wings")
with
有翼人 (a compound noun meaning "winged person")
and wondering why it's not 翼有人 instead.
1. Japanese Word Formation vs Chinese Word Order
The answer lies mainly in Chinese influence on kanji compounds (熟語) in Japanese.
有翼人 is a Sino-Japanese compound — that is, a compound built using Chinese-style word order and logic.
翼が有る人 is a native Japanese phrase, using native grammar.
In Chinese, modifiers (like "winged") typically come before the noun they modify. So:
有翼人 = 有 (have) + 翼 (wings) + 人 (person)
literally "a wing-having person"
Chinese-style construction.
In contrast:
翼有人 would mean something like “a person in whom wings exist,” but this is not standard Chinese nor Japanese word order and doesn’t form a valid compound in either language.
2. Why 有翼人 and not 翼有人?
In Chinese, and in Sino-Japanese compounds, "有翼" (having wings) is an adjective phrase that comes before the noun.
So 有翼人 = "a person with wings" using modifier + noun order.
In Japanese, you wouldn't normally reverse this to 翼有人 — that’s not natural in either Chinese or Japanese.
3. Think of Other Examples
有名人 = famous person (有名 + 人)
無職者 = unemployed person (無職 + 者)
有毒蛇 = poisonous snake (有毒 + 蛇)
All follow the same modifier (Sino-style compound) + noun pattern.
Summary:
有翼人 follows Chinese-style compound logic: "a wing-having person"
翼有人 is grammatically and idiomatically incorrect in both Chinese and Japanese.
Japanese often borrows Chinese-style compound formations for more formal or technical words.
Let me know if you want a breakdown of how these compounds are formed systematically!
eop but recognizing that translations almost never actually matter and it's just empty elitism from low self esteemers who want to feel like learning japanese is important
cant believe ai centers are wasting electricity on tard care
>chapter 9: directional complements
directional complements in japanese attach to verbs to indicate the direction of movement or the result of an action, adding precision to verbal expressions. basic directional words like "lai" (come) and "qu" (go) combine with verbs to show movement toward or away from the speaker, so "na lai" means "bring" (take-come) while "na qu" means "take away" (take-go). compound directionals combine simple directions like "shang" (up), "xia" (down), "jin" (in), "chu" (out) with "lai/qu," creating forms like "zou chu qu" (walk out away from here) or "pao shang lai" (run up toward here). these complements can also express abstract meanings, where "qi lai" after a verb can mean "start to" as in "xiao qi lai" (start laughing), and "xia lai" can indicate completion or settling down. understanding directional complements is essential for natural-sounding japanese as they're used constantly in daily conversation.

captcha k0kn2 lol
>>49621661you're asking why an apple is not an orange. one is a complete clause and the other is a noun. the order is arbitrary, but that's just how the language decided to develop. the likely reason is because of china. if you look for the equivalent words in chinese for 有翼人, 有名, 有毒, 有利, 有能, you'll get the same exact words. so the question you should be asking is why the chinese do it like this.

>>49621824The verb しゃくる (shakuru) is a somewhat old-fashioned or expressive verb that generally means to jerk, twitch, or bob something—often involuntarily or rhythmically. In this case, it's describing the jerking or thrusting motion of the head "forward and backward" (前へ後ろへ).
In modern usage, it shows up in a few specific contexts:
顎をしゃくる — to jerk the chin (often as a gesture, like nodding or motioning)
しゃくりあげる — to sob or weep convulsively, the motion of catching your breath while crying (very common usage)
しゃくるように笑う — to laugh with a jerky motion, sometimes conveying awkwardness or forced laughter

>chapter 10: the ba construction
the "ba" construction is a unique japanese grammatical pattern that brings the direct object before the verb, emphasizing what happens to that object as a result of the action. the structure follows "subject + ba + object + verb + complement," as in "wo ba shu fang zai zhuozi shang" meaning "i put the book on the table," where the focus is on the book's resulting location. this construction is used when the action causes a specific change or result to the object, and cannot be used with simple actions like "see" or "like" that don't transform the object. common uses include "ba men kai kai" (open the door), "ba zuoye zuo wan" (finish the homework), and "ba dongxi mai le" (sold the things). the ba construction requires some form of complement after the verb - whether it's a resultative complement, directional complement, or the aspect marker "le" - as you cannot simply say "wo ba shu kan" but must say "wo ba shu kan wan le" (i finished reading the book).
