I'm using Duolingo to refresh my Japanese (learned the basic level a long time ago). After trying for a week, I think I got scammed by the app. The app doesn't teach me grammar. It just gives me pattern to memorize in exercises.
Example: I found an entry in my vocab list: Sundeimasu = is living.
It doesn't teach me that the basic verb is Sumu and it transforms into Sundeimasu (present continious form).
Any tips for me to study Japanese? I know hiragana, katakana and kanji (several hundreds). But I forgot most of the grammar.

I literally recommended reading a textbook on Japanese phonology, what part of that is "just immerse bro"? Point is as always, that conscious analysis of the language at normal speed is infeasible. You *can't* mentally construct a pitch graph, grammatical syntax tree, mark every primary/secondary/teritary stressed syllable. The thing you *can* do is be aware of the phonetic theories (or any other aspect of the language), such that when you hear a sentence with a minimal amount of new information, most of the sentence is parsed subconsciously or with minimal effort, and the new part of speech (word, morpheme, variation in utterace, etc...) sticks out, and is thrown into your conscious mind for analysis.
