It starts with one, one thing, I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind, I designed this rhyme to explain in due time
All I know, time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day, the clock ticks life away
It's so unreal, didn't look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Tryna hold on, d-didn't even know
I wasted it all just to watch you go
I kept everything inside and even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when
I tried so hard, and got so far
But in the end, it doesn't even matter
I had to fall to lose it all
But in the end, it doesn't even matter

A Wii and a PS2 are some of the obvious ones but I'd like to think she also managed to get her hands on a GameCube as well. I'm tempted to say 64 and PS1 too but that might be a stretch, maybe one or the other when she was little.
For handhelds I think she'd strictly be DS and GBA, she might have a few original GB games but she just strikes me as that kind of purist is all. Slightly unrelated but I also think she'd be a fan of the Switch and be the kind of girl to have one of those colored plastic see-through Macs of her time at home.
Would she have bothered to hold on to something like the Super Famicom though, or maybe even any Sega consoles? Sanae playing the Dreamcast does sound cool in theory imo.

20 bucks is about what they were worth at the time. IDK why they were left to sit on the shelf for so long, especially since most of them worked completely fine. I wanna say the in box examples were sold for like 40 or 50 bucks, but still not the ridiculous sum people are asking now. the worst part is most of em getting sold for these outrageous fees are just gonna sit on some man child's shelf and never actually get used.

>what would Sanae's favorite game genre be? I'm thinking RPG, considering that's the only one she canonically even mentions. I struggle to see her playing something like an RTS.
Maybe because I too am inclined to think she greatly appreciates RTS, I believe she'd have a penchant for isometric real time tactics games, such as Commandos or Desperados.
Not naturally tho, but I believe once she was introduced to these kind of games she'd no life them autistically.
Other than that, I see her easily being super into FF, Pokemon, or any stat heavy turn based combat game.

Headcanon here but I can also picture her creating super cute homesteads and farms in games such as AC and Stardew Valley.

I like this one, particularly.
As for the feeling... a lot of art of this type does just have the character be a small part of the landscape surrounding them, but I feel like it fits quite well for Sanae.
This one I feel captures the feeling of loneliness in a foreign land fairly well, and I imagine that's how Sanae felt for quite a while. Gensokyo was completely foreign and alien to her, an entirely primitive, barren, wild land that she once felt a sense of superiority over but then came to love.

Also a big plus when people portray Moriya Shrine like how Sanae described it in MoF.

Anonymous No.49659743 >>49659964
>>49659478
I wouldn't say it captures her essence, I think the cooler art of her often leaves out her cheery attitude. Those landscapes make her look way more detached.
Whenever I look at those images, I am reminded of her stage theme, specifically of its title. She is almost always the subject of her environment, as opposed to a part of it. That part she shares with the other three I mentioned, but where she is unique is in the fact that, while she experiences her environment, she is also connected to it to a much larger degree, being her shrine and all.
At the risk of sounding pretentious, her relation to her surroundings is interesting to contemplate, it's almost zen in a way. She experiences her newfound self, which is that Primal Scene of Japan, which she watches.
I wouldn't say that necessarily makes her better, but it certainly makes her unique.
Anonymous No.49659964
>>49659743
Sanae is for sure a cheerful and :D character, but that's only part of her. When I say it captures her essence, I mean that it captures the other part of her that's only ever briefly touched on in MoF, where in her omake it says that she was scared to go to Gensokyo, where she thinks that the people are primitive when she arrives. I feel like these images capture that feeling of dread or feeling lost, she's made to be a small, perceiving part of the image hopelessly tiny and overpowered by the wild landscape around her. It all ties back to her stage theme, as you said, "The Primal Scene of Japan the girl saw" (or watched, if that's the translation you prefer), just her, alone, perceiving this land that's completely alien to her, all the while feeling unsure and scared. Later on, that gives way to her completely assimilating and feeling at home in Gensokyo.
So while it may not capture the essence of Sanae as we see her now, it captures the essence of how she was in the past, way back in MoF.

Personally, I've always assumed that they're simply dead and have been for some time.
Sanae is the head of her clan, as ZUN points out in an interview, and the head priestess of her shrine (well, she's the ONLY priestess of her shrine). She has no elders, no superiors, yet someone had to have taught her how to do miracles, as the technique isn't actually written down, going by her character profile.
I'd assume that someone would be her elder, a grandparent or parent considering her family has served the gods of Suwa for generations, yet it's Sanae that's the head of her entire clan.
ZUN's pretty bad when it comes to character backstories so we'll never know for sure, but them being 6 feet under just makes the most sense to me.
Maybe they died when she was really young and she had to be raised by her grandparents until Kanako went to Gensokyo, maybe they died when she was older, etc.

>it feels different from the cool art of Aya or the Hifuus.
True. Aya's art, when it is background/environment driven, tends to have action or turn very picturesque, sometimes with a darker mood due to her being a youkai. There are often other people in the background, angles from bird's-eye view are very common for more than one obvious reason, if the scenery happens to be oppressive, she still looks as if in her element.
Sanae's pictures are more toned down, neither as bristling with energy nor with dangerous undercurrent, more contemplative, but still hopefully optimistic. You can tell this is a girl enjoying the scenery she fits in, on some psychological level. This optimism full of tender hope pushes towards things that are alive but calm, like mountains, trees, bodies of water, composing well with green hair and blue skirt, incidentally.
On this level it contrasts with Hifuu, who are usually either in liminal, decayed environment, or modern, fast-paced city landscape that is not really alive.

the softlocks are amusing and probably won't happen to many other people; you have to intentionally try to bring suika's suplex to the nitori fight. the only thing i really would've liked changed is adding autofire to the shump sections because i was hurting myself doing them but i just found out there's a charge shot that homes and pierces during certain phases where the boss is invincible to normal shots. the store page shows it and the pause menu does too, but if you don't pause during those sections you wouldn't know about it i don't think. owned for not doing a button check.

I feel like there's a case for cozy winter Sanae as well: summer is popular girl season, winter is dork hibernation season. A whole three-four months of darkness, cold, and an environment that actively keeps you from going outside. It would be the perfect time for her to stay inside, wrapped in blankets, 100%-ing whatever retro titles she fancies.

Not to mention, winter is the season of hugs and cuddles! With how poorly insulated traditional japanese buildings are, you'd be spending a lot of nights falling asleep wrapped in one another's arms, or sharing a snug blanket on with her on the sofa, made (Ludovico style, if need be) to watch pre-2000's anime with her. (Also, could you imagine caring for Sanny if she ever caught a cold? Kissing her on her little stuffed nose, doting on her as you do what you can to help her through it? Ruffling her hair as she naps, sleeping her way to recovery...)

I forgot to say, but Sanae, as THE head priestess of the shrine, is also expected to participate in festivals where the participants demonstrate their military prowess, so she also needs to be good with bows, be able to shoot bows from horseback, be skilled at falconry, etc...
I struggle to see this dork being some sort of archery master or skilled warrior, since I see her as too nerdy, but Kanako IS a war god, while also being a god of wind and rain, so I guess her only representative should also be good at the things she's the god of.

Sanae and her Sanae lived alone in a small Sanae on a Sanae. Sanae kept to herself, drawing Sanae and playing with her Sanae as her Sanae watched Christian Sanae on the Sanae.
Sanae was simple, and they were both Sanae.
That was, until the day Sanae's Sanae heard a Sanae from above: "Your Sanae has become corrupted by Sanae! She needs to be Sanae!"
"I will do my best Sanae to save Sanae, my Sanae, "Sanae's Sanae replied, rushing into Sanae's Sanae, removing all that was Sanae from her Sanae.
Again, the Sanae called to her:
"Sanae's Sanae is still Sanae! She needs to be cut off from all that is Sanae in the Sanae and confess her Sanae."
"I will follow your Sanae, Sanae. I have Sanae in thee, "Sanae's Sanae replied, as she locked Sanae away in her Sanae, away from the Sanaes of the Sanae.
One last Sanae, Sanae's Sanae heard the Sanae of Sanae calling to her:
"You have done as I asked, but I still Sanae your Sanae to Sanae. To prove your Sanae, I will ask one more Sanae of you."
"Yes, Sanae. Sanae, "Sanae's Sanae begged.
"To prove your Sanae and Sanae, I require a Sanae. Your Sanae Sanae will be the Sanae. Go into her Sanae and end her Sanae as an Sanae to me, to Sanae that you Sanae me above all Sanae!"
"Yes, Sanae," she replied, grabbing a Sanae from the Sanae.
Sanae, watching through a Sanae in the Sanae, trembled in Sanae. Scrambling around her Sanae to find a Sanae, she noticed a Sanae to the Sanae, hidden under her Sanae. Without Sanae, she flung open the Sanae just as her Sanae burst through her Sanae and threw Sanae down into the unknown Sanae below.

Can Kanako and Suwako shapeshift into normal people, or is there just a purple haired lady and a blonde kid masquerading as Sanae's parents? If her parents die and Kanako and Suwako take over raising her, how does she not get sent to an orphanage? By the time they go to Gensokyo, their faith is so faint that they can barely manifest themselves, let alone masquerade as Sanae's parents.

If someone dislikes themselves deeply enough, it really won't serve as motivation, I've found, even if it doesn't make sense. With Sanae in particular, she's always shown being kind to humans, and as a religious leader, she ought to be kind and gentle and reassuring... which she is shown being.
But these kinds of things don't work for a lotta people. Personally, I've managed to get some use out of it, primarily by motivating myself to work out harder.

Very good questions. I assume that it wasn't so bad until not long before they came to Gensokyo... and that they had to play a careful juggling act to keep the authorities from realizing that half the time the teenaged girl is just living functionally alone in the shrine.
Such a thing would, undoubtedly, wear on them...

I feel like that's a fault of how ZUN writes the characters. They either have no flaws, their flaws are their entire character, or they have flaws, but you rarely see them.
Sanae has flaws and problems of her own, she's overconfident, a braggart, overcompetitive, is willing to twist the truth and embellish her own feats while not crediting others, etc.
But I feel like it's only natural that if you like something or someone, you make it out to seem saintly, while you put yourself down and look at your own characteristics through a more realistic lens. Most of us see our characters as absolute saints, where even their imperfections are perfect, and a lot of people apply this to real persons as well, but that's being a bit unfair on yourself...
As I said, not everyone can get a lot of, or any, use out of it, but if you can it's a great but easy motivator for simple things. I, personally, realize that I'm first and foremost doing this for myself and because I see a need for improvement in myself, but motivating yourself to improve FOR yourself is always more difficult than doing it through a proxy, at least that's how it is for me.
>Just make sure not to overdo it

I wouldn't say image dumps or hornyposting is bad per se, a character's thread is a reflection of what the people that like that character want to talk about in relation to that character. If that means espousing their love for her thread after thread by talking about how they want to lick her feet, then that's what they want to talk about. Those threads are also pretty much always alive and well, so it's clear that there's a lot of fans of that character that enjoy talking about that stuff. I don't mind it. You can always leave an interesting SFW post or question in a thread like that and see if anyone wants to talk about it with you.
What I would say is that I'm glad that there's a thread or three where people talk about random stuff that you don't expect, or threads where people make interesting headcanons.
>>49780995
It is a matter of perspective, it all depends on what places you frequent, but I'd say the % of things you see in places a lot of people frequent has changed to be more positive. I haven't seen anything of the sort you say you see frequently for around a year or so, and I do think newer people in general have more positive opinions on all the characters.

My expectations for threads are always low, so if something even remotely interesting happens, I'm happy with it.

An interesting thing I've noticed with Sanae's design that relates to the history of Suwa Taisha - if you take ZUN's word at face value, then Sanae is the Ohori of Suwa Taisha and also the head of the Suwa clan, IRL this would make her the descendant of Suwa Myojin (In Gensokyo, this would be Kanako) but in reality she's more of a mix of the head priest of Suwa Taisha and the Ohori, i.e. she is a descendant of the god Moreya and also a living god herself.
How does this relate to her design? Every new Ohori used to be sworn in in a ceremony where the head priest makes a Mishaguji possess the Ohori's body - this is how they become gods.
Sanae's divinity of course doesn't rest on that, but she does have a snake in her hair. Apart from representing Kanako (alongside the frog that represents Suwako) I feel like it's also a reference to how Suwa Ohori became gods, as the snake itself is actually alive and very Mishaguji-like, it has autonomy... even though it mostly just hisses at people.
Side note, after a decree was passed abolishing hereditary priesthood, the secret rites of the Moreya clan and the tradition surrounding the Ohori of the Suwa clan were eventually lost.
The current, real life Sanae (who is a grandma and part of the Moreya clan), has no knowledge of the rites and rituals of her clan. Gensokyo Sanae however is explicitly stated to have learned and mastered them at a young age, which is kinda funny.

What do you all think Sanae would look like if she was a real person? I imagine she would look pretty much like she does in the games, except obviously a real Japanese girl, with brown eyes and dark brown hair, (or maybe she'd have green hair and either blue or green eyes, idk), her hair would have little bit of a wave in it, down to her shoulders but she sometimes grows it longer and cuts it shorter, and she'd wear normal clothes most of the time, and she'd be really cute

The closest you can get to Sanae IRL in terms of both name AND function is Sanae Moreya, who is the current head of the Moreya family and descendant of the god Moreya. I am genuinely convinced that the only reason Sanae is even NAMED Sanae is because ZUN just copied the name of the real person. She's an 80 year old grandma born in 1945. See attached picture. I know that's not the answer you're looking for though.

I'd say... Imagine a plain Japanese girl, wavy black hair, but with some sort of striking feature - something like blue or green eyes. In general maybe somewhat of a rural flair, Nagano isn't very urban in the first place, and Suwa less so.
>Sounds like she had a natural talent for miracles
Yeah, says so in her character profile:
>When she was young, Sanae had mastered the secrets to call upon miracles
IRL, descendants of Suwa Myojin became gods at an early age and were trained to do the ancient rituals of Suwa by the head priest.

I know Sanae is inspired by her, and Sanae is definitely not an 80 year old grandma, she would be like 30 now, and she definitely wouldn't look like that

I'm aware, and the end of the first paragraph I say that what I'm saying isn't what you're asking at all. I just used your post there to clip an addendum onto my original post, which I could've done by just replying to myself, but oh well.
The second part of the post is replying to what you're asking. I don't think she would look special or stand out in any significant way appearance wise except for eye color; blue fits best because I think it's a charismatic and very striking color. Short, pale skinned, probably somewhat conventionally attractive by Japanese standards. Hair's a tossup but I stand by wavy black hair, and she's also somewhat forgetful at times so I'd say her hair could be periodically messy.
I'd also like to say she wears glasses. We know she actually owns glasses, so I feel like a real Sanae would wear them.
As for her having natural talent, again I just used that as a way to fix something onto my original post, but she's definitely talented and a stand-out in her family by all accounts, and it was expected that she'd get large amounts of believers simply from the merit of her being so young yet so talented with miracles. I think a real life Sanae would also be similarly extraordinarily skilled, if not in miracles, than random things you don't expect. Sorry for not providing a full response to your post in my first one lol

I don’t think blue eyes are out of the question for Asians, so I’d say she has vibrant blue-green eyes which might be considered a miracle. They sparkle when she smiles, and particularly when she’s geeking out. I imagine her hair is gently waved, and is very silky to the touch. The plant-like ahoge probably depicts her on days when she’s feeling lazy and doesn’t want to fix her bedhead.

She’s on the tall side, and she’s curvier than average for her age, partly due to genetics and partly due to her sweet tooth. Her normally delicate hands have evidence of cuts from times she’s working on Gunpla and slips with her hobby knife.

She chose the appearance herself and her real self is just a native land spirit, i.e. she is the land of Suwa
If that's the form she gave birth in then I'd say the genetics of the form she's currently in do pass down, she could probably choose another form and her genetics would be different

That's why Maribel often spaces out and lets her rant when they're talking. On the other hand, Sumireko is more annoying, uses stupid jargon, and is probably louder than she should be, but the things she says are way less dense.

I just thought of something

I've always wondered why Sanae is so unusually powerful when her divine ancestry is many generations back

I don't think these things just skip 50 generations, so there must be a god in her family tree much more recently than that

I think her father was descended from Suwako, and her real mother is actually Kanako

Kanako certainly treats her like a daughter, in fanworks at least, and she cares about Sanae a lot in canon as well

Just something I thought of

She's powerful partly because of her own skill, partly because she's a god (and she's one because some small amount of people believe in her, not because of descent) and majorly because her powers are borrowed from Kanako and Suwako
Her own spell cards are clever but not too terribly powerful (Marisa compliments her on being crafty, she uses her own ritual preparations as a spell card which allows her to borrow one of Kanako's moves as a follow-up card), so most of her power comes from Kanako and Suwako letting her go wild with their powers, most of her miracle spell cards correspond to domains that Kanako rules over, like Moses' miracle uses Kanako's power as a god of rain and water, Rice shower uses Suwako's power as a harvest and land god, etc
Perhaps the strongest card that is really HER OWN is Nine syllable stabs, a priestly technique

>(and she's one because some small amount of people believe in her, not because of descent)
People believe in her because she can work miracles, she's been able to since she was a little girl, and she explicitly gets that power from Suwako, it's innate to her even if she loses all her faith

>and majorly because her powers are borrowed from Kanako and Suwako
Some of them, yes, but she's pretty strong under her own power, too, she was only using her own powers as a god in TD, she wasn't borrowing anything from them

Also, to add to this theory, Suwako has yellow hair, Kanako has purple hair, which is very similar to blue (I know it's not the same, but just assume it is for the sake of argument), and when you combine yellow and blue you get green

>>49798292
>Suwako's genes are just that dominant
No, they're not, it's stated in her MoF profile that it's unusual for anyone to master the power of miracles that young, even her own ancestors

I don't think she's the type to abandon her own family, either, even if it was to move to the land of her dreams

I think her father maybe died shortly before she went to Gensokyo, and that left her with just Kanako, and that's why she went with her

>>49798299
>Is this headcanon, or is it said somewhere?
It's headcanon, Suwako was asleep the entire time Sanae lived in the outside world and she was only barely aware Suwako existed

Again, just a theory

>and she explicitly gets that power from Suwako
Sorry, I just realised that makes no sense and completely invalidates my argument

Her ancestors all had the ability to learn how to work miracles, which they got from Suwako, but she just always knew how to do them, and my theory is that she gets that from Kanako

>not because of descent
But thats how native gods work. if they don't have followers worshipping them, even a small group of them, they start vanishing away. Sanae, being part human, doesn't die straight away if people don't worship her, but she loses all of her divine qualities

>Sanae, being part human, doesn't die straight away if people don't worship her, but she loses all of her divine qualities
I really don't think anyone worshipped her the moment she was born, Sanae was probably born in the 90s, and Japanese people didn't really take Shinto seriously in the 90s except very old people, it was just tradition, and no-one seriously believed the Ohafuri (or is it Ohouri? I can't remember) were living gods, it's just a belief

It's said somewhere by ZUN, can't remember were, that the Japanese lost all their faith in living gods when the emperor renounced his divinity in 1945 (he wasn't the same type of living god though)

I think since then, Sanae's ancestors haven't been able to work miracles at all, and that's why people just gradually forgot that there was ever such a thing as living gods

As a side note, I think this picture was shortly after they moved to Gensokyo, I don't know if Sanae has always been able to fly or if she only gained that power when she moved there, but she looks very excited, either from being able to fly or not being forced to hide who she really is from the world anymore

ZUN:
>The idea of "living gods" itself doesn't exist anymore ever since Emperor Hirohito passed away. After the Declaration of Humanity, that concept probably worked its way down to Suwa, too. There may still be an Ohafuri, but they aren't divine, so I figured it'd be fine to bring that concept to Gensokyo where the gods are still thriving.
But also:
>Sanae is currently Kanako's Shrine Maiden, but the reason she can create miracles is because she is Suwako's distant descendant.
Sanae's entire bloodline can do miracles, it is part of her whether she's a god or not, and her divinity is attained, not inherent, through the act of doing miracles
>There were few who would worship even a living god who had attained divinity during their life as a human.
Note: attained divinity

>Sanae's entire bloodline can do miracles
Yes, but Suwako's genes would be so weak at this point that they would require faith along with the divine blood to work miracles, but I'm saying Sanae doesn't need faith, she can work miracles whether people believe in her or not, and being able to work miracles is the definition of godhood

Her ancestors might've been as strong as her in the distant past, but they're not now, because if they could work real, genuine miracles that even the biggest skeptic would recognise as a miracle, they shouldn't have lost all their faith after 1945

Gods get stronger with faith, definitely, but I think there's just some innate divinity in Sanae that will never go away, even if people stop believing in her

All gods have domains, living gods probably do too, Kanako's a god of the sky, Suwako's a god of the earth, but we've never been told Sanae's domain, and I think she's maybe a god of miracles

I have no proof of this, of course

I dunno, maybe I'm just bad at reading faces, but Sanae looks genuinely worried

I think if it was a joke she'd be smiling, she's one of those people who can't help but keep their real feelings off their face after all

Whatever, I'm just taking this too seriously I guess

I think if Satori was really about to be used as a human meatshield she'd be more worried and less just... slightly annoyed that Sanae is messing with her? She just seems annoyed with Sanae and is looking at her specifically, instead of whoever or whatever is about to hit the two of them. Sanae seems like she's putting on a serious face to go along with the bit.
But it's not like the artist thought that much about this, we're just adding foreign meaning to an art piece that probably had none, death of the artist and all that.

Well, probably, yeah

Like I said, I'm just taking this too seriously, Sanae has been my favourite Touhou character since 2012 and so many people just don't seem to get her, I especially don't like the "Sanae is a youkai bully and a racist" interpretation

I'm sure she has at least some control over her facial expressions and can fake a worried look

It's just a silly drawing on the internet and I've always been an overthinker

I'm always glad to see someone who sticks by a series for so long, and especially someone who sticks by a character for so long.
>so many people just don't seem to get her
Aside from everyone having their own slightly different personal interpretation, most people don't 'understand' the characters, even if they are their favorites. There's a large amount of people who base their favorites on hearsay, rumors or memes, which I feel is a shame.
Sanae isn't a bully by any means, though I personally don't mind her being portrayed as a youkai hater sometimes, if it's funny.. Her antics in Touhou 12 made too many people view her the wrong way, though. She's not malicious or hateful, she's just way overconfident and in over her own head, plus she likes to listen to her gods instead of doing her own thing. In most accounts we have of her she's a goody two shoes who means no harm and helps her friends. She's cocky, sometimes shady, but genuinely wants to help people and her pals.
