Ask questions, inquire about some details that were omitted, let them talk more about the subject at hand or allow them to explain some literary trick they've used for their text that they are proud of. As long as your questions aren't critical or doubting, but rather curiosity-driven and putting the author as more knowledgeable than you, they will be very friendly and open to conversation. I saw that in action, I used that myself, it was used on me. It's terrifyingly effective.
Authors crave this kind of meaningful validation. They put work into researching or imagining what they write about and then they put more work into presenting those things in coherent, hopefully interesting manner. This is their craft. Giving platitudes to the text without engaging the meaning of it is like putting a tool or weapon into display window instead of using it, no craftsman would be pleased with that.
I personally saw a representation of that in BAiJR. Look at how Aya's chats there are related to the article about whoever she talks at the time. Sometimes it is because she still tries to uncover the truth (Sakuya, Mokou), sometimes it is because the other party have direct issues with the article (Marisa, Cirno), but most often it seems like a innocent chit-chat initiated by Aya. Great part of it is reporter's curiosity, no denying that, but then you have the talk with Mystia with such lines from Aya:
>You're the first one who hasn't shown any interest in their own article... >Aren't you even interested in your own article? I rarely see anyone that isn't.which to me feels like an indicator that Aya went around talking about articles related to the speaker because she expected that they had read at least such article, which in turn meant that she could coax a meaningful engagement from them and feel better about herself and Bunbunmaru.
