How the hell are your photos always so fucking crisp? Every photo I take, even when the focus is good and settings should be optimal, has either some stupid aberration or a soft focus on even the sharpest parts of the image. I've cleaned lenses, improved lighting, played with aperture, just about everything. What are you doing that I'm not? Is it the sensor? Better lenses? I don't get it. I just want my dolls to look as pretty in my photos as they do to me irl

>couple months for the colors to lighten
see I want a dark color, so I've been thinking how I might accomplish that
the reason the colors lighten on vinyl is because it's sucking the dye in further, so I understand
so once it reaches equilibrium it should stop, the question is how to get there
multiple goes in the dye? cold brew in dye for a few months (with replenishment)?
chemical dye transfer instead of water? like, mix dye with zit cream and do a reverse stain treatment
results would probably be pretty spotty due to nonuniform coverage though

Not that anon, but more dilution is better for transfer of the dye bath from my understanding. Not diluting it enough is how you get spots/streaks. Maybe just spend a year re-dye-ing it multiple times until the result is the shade you want? I don't know if that's feasible, either. There's room for investigation here.

Alternatively some people use an airbrush, but the amount of touch-ups is considerable.

>Is it the sensor? Better lenses?
I can absolutely, 99 percent certainly state that the sensor is not your issue. I'm using a D3400 which is an old APS-C sensor.
That photo was taken with a 50mm prime, NIKKOR AF-S 50mm f/1.4G. It's stopped down to f/5.6 in that photo where it's decently sharp. I doubt that lens is the contributing factor since it was stopped down to around what normal kit lenses would be at.
Try stopping your lens down to f/5.6 to f/10; somewhere in that range will likely be your best option for sharpness. More importantly with the lens is what focal length you have. 50mm APS-C is roughly 75mm in full frame focal length. Something around or longer than 50mm I've found I like for doll photos. I promise you, the lens and sensor you have are not where you need to start looking for improving your photos.

1. If you aren't using a tripod, use a tripod. Simple enough, but this alone will solve a lot of problems.
2. If you aren't using contrast based autofocus, switch to that. With your camera on a tripod, go to the live view and use that for autofocus. It'll be more consistent and accurate than phase detect autofocus on DSLRs. Otherwise, just zoom in on the preview mode on where you want your focus to be and manually set it for as sharp as you can get it. Things aren't moving with dolls, luckily.
3. Probably the most important is lighting. This will impact shutter speed; you're going to want to get his as short as you can reasonably get. Anything 1/120 or faster and you're golden. Longer can be fine too; even multiple second exposures so long as the camera and subject aren't shaking but it gets harder to control. That shot was at 1/500 because the light was blasting in through the window at sunset and Lily was in direct sunlight which also gave the nice contrast and shadows. The direct bright light allowed all the individual strands of the wig to stand out against a dark, unlit wall. Learn how to recognize good lighting and use it or create it.
4. Use the timer or a remote to control the shutter, so that you aren't pressing the shutter button and potentially shaking the camera during an exposure.

Idk I hope that helps.

It's hard to give concrete advice past 'use a tripod' without knowing either your gear or seeing some of the photos that you have issues with. Particularly the latter since I don't know if this is from pixel hunting for issues or if you legitimately have some configuration problems that result in obviously bad photos. I bring that up because pixel hunting is a pitfall a lot of people fall into, being overly critical of photos that are honestly perfectly fine despite a bit of softness here or there

Another dye after it lightens might be the ticket to getting more permanent dark color. I was going to attempt a redye or two once they lighten.
This photo of momokoโ€™s body is from Dec. I did the chest back in May, and the whole body in April. The joint colors are what the soft vinyl was in shade originally. Looking back at photos it seems to have lightened a lot in that following month or two.

Speaking of cameras, a T7i with 50mm 1.8 II and 40mm 2.8 STM lens popped up for 515 US and I'm really considering upgrading off my very entry level T7. I tend to do a lot of low to the ground shots and I find the lack of an articulating screen annoying. Either through because of screen glare or having to contort to see it.

Or should I just hang on to the T7 and embrace the future with an R series much later on down the road?

some cursory googling came up with a few options for chemical dyeing
most promising looks like the approach some people use to dye PVC pipe, basically the purple pipe primer but custom colors
could probably get some great results running that through an airbrush
it'll have fading issues like water dyeing, it doesn't fade on PVC pipe but doll vinyl has significantly more plasticizers in it and I suspect that's what promotes dye propagation
that said it may take less time to build up to critical dye concentration using this method, I'll have to find a test body and do some research

If you have a vinyl, dollfie dream smart doll with internal frame joints, then a piece of paper like pic related, hot glue, action figure joint tightening liquid, or a screw driver to tighten the neck joint if there are screws in there.

I'm dumb as fuck, what's De Minimis and how does it affect dolls?
Anonymous No.49673647 >>49674551
>>49673578
de minimis refers to imports below a certain value not being worth the time for customs to apply import taxes to; typically the declared value of goods below a certain value just pass through to you as a consumer untaxed. IIRC, the previous value was like $800 per shipment. This is why you would hear people asking sellers to adjust declared value in the past, and still do for certain countries. This is partially how Temu got so popular, since chinkshit could flood the market fairly easily without getting taxed when the parcels go directly to an individual. I still have no idea how they're able to economically ship things when it costs me as a US guy like $120 to ship a 1lb package to Japan, but that's another question. But since the majority of doll manufacturers, clothing sellers, etc. are from Japan, Hong Kong, and most importantly China, the elimination of de minimis means that those goods now get hit with tariffs no matter the value. To be fair, the US was pretty generous with its de minimis limit. Other places have been cucked with VAT and exceedingly low de minimis values such that anons in the /a/ secret santa had to pay duties for a $18 declared value card/ornament/chocolates import.

>>49671678
The time and effort to sew your own clothes is still not worth it from a pure value standpoint; fabric is surprisingly expensive and it takes hours and hours to sew most outfits. Go down that road if you want purely from the hobby/enjoyment standpoint; don't think you're going to save a lot of money by doing this. But for a good beginner sewing machine, get one that's digitally controlled. I don't mean touchscreen or 1000 different stitch patterns, just that the motor has an encoder on it; this means that you'll be able to always stop the needle in a predictable up or down position which saves a lot of frustration and time.
Anonymous No.49673672
>>49671678
>What's a good sewing machine for a beginner?
Any computerized entry level machine made by Brother or Singer, as long as it can do overlock stitches and maybe some decorative patterns. Might want to check the second hand market, when I started sewing 2 years ago I got mine (a Brother CX70) for dirt cheap from someone who bought it during covid lockdowns and then barely used it.
>Any tips for finding fabric scraps for cheap/free?
Check if your area has any fabric flea markets. Also if IKEA or a similar bedding store has bedsheets or duvet covers on sale that's a great way to get large amounts of fabric in base colors for cheap.

Unless you're a pro, you can't clean inside of a camera lens. You can only use a lint-free cloth and wipe the exterior glass of your lens. If you look through your lens, you might see dirt inside it. That is normal from regular use. Sometimes the artifacts won't be seen in certain aperture stops. Nikon might have a program to clean/refurbish your lens if there is dirt inside for a cost.

Cleaning internal elements of lenses requires care, patience, meticulous cleaning methods, and if you want to be sure it's going back together the right way some expensive equipment. It can be done on a budget without fancy calibration equipment if you must, but I'd reserve that for only extremely fungus-ified lenses; a few dust marks and you will likely do more harm than good.

New wig and dress time.
Got them from Etsy because the doll in the promo pictures had both of these and I thought she was cute.

I love the wig, she feels like a different doll. Although I have kind of already set my mind on how she looks, so it'll probably be switched back eventually. This is the second wig I think really works for her, I got some others, but the others didn't turn out good.

Dress is above average, I like the color. It seems to be "half done". It's very loose, and it has only one snap, I'll have to add some snaps myself. The doll stand is holding it in its place much more than that single snap. It also came with some accessories, I wanted to check the photos in the listing to see how it's meant to be worn with them, but looks like the seller has closed shop since. Apparently it was a proxy seller...

May I suggest hitting up a thrift store for fabric? You just take the fabric from clothing. There's a lot of cheap plus size clothing with perfectly good fabric.

I may change her eyes too....I'm not sure. I've just had them sitting on my desk and now that I have stands I can do different poses....once I figure that out. I'm not entirely sure how to hide the arms that hold them, it's pretty obvious on Olivia or how to make them tighter so I can do poses with the legs and such. I also need to figure out how to line them up on my desk but all in time. I'm still paranoid they're going to fall out if I bump my desk but I guess time will tell. I also need to learn to take better photos but it really doesn;t matter as I'm the only one that's going to be seeing them and i have no interest in social media aside from occasionally posting here.

I wanted to have a custom one originally: If you've shopped for wigs before, you have probably seen the wig maker who makes their promo photos with a custom Alice doll (it's actually the poster to her top right). That's what I saw first, and that's how I got her, by tracking down the doll in the photo.
But I didn't have it in me to try and recreate that makeup, I'm too afraid of ruining her.

Hi all.. I have a bit of a storytime but last week I went to the Volks booth at Anime Expo and saw that they had a handful Dollfie Dream Miku NT dolls available over the course of the con. I knew that these dolls existed but they were always too expensive in secondhand stores or eBay so I never paid much attention to them.. however, the Volks booth was selling them for $690 which is still really expensive for me but was a much better price than I've ever seen for these dolls.

After thinking about it a bunch I decided I do really want the doll, so I went to the booth every day to see if I could buy one before they sold out. Fortunately, I was finally able to get one on the last day they were stocking her! She was wayy too big to fit in the carryon luggage I brought to the con so I had to drop her off at a FedEx office in Los Angeles to ship her back home.

Anyways, today she finally came in and I immediately got to unboxing and dressing her and I cannot be happier with the result! I was aware of the hobby but I didn't understand all this doll stuff at first but I think I get it now..

Trick department store lighting works just as well on dolls as real clothes, the f-3 didnโ€™t look any bigger in the store, I just figured it would make the clothes look better, but sheโ€™s honestly huge, none of the awesome 3rd party dresses from the second hand stores fit. Heck, even the folk retail store where I bought her, 2/3 of the clothes โ€œno that wonโ€™t fit herโ€. So if you have the DD-L bust on her, a DDdy dress should fit pretty good. Hips are the big problem with DDdy girls, and most Volks dresses will have adjustment rings on them, just make sure it says it'll be compatible with that size. Anything saying it's for Smart Doll will be VERY tight, and depending on the material, won't fit. There are lots of options for a DD-L girl, you just have to double check sizes. If you decide you don't like it, DD F3s are modular, so you can always order a smaller torso and change it out for an M. They're like $33 US.

honestly I probably learned about bjds in 2020-21 when I was browsing /jp/ for other stuff during and I saw pretty dolls in this thread.. admittedly, the only precautions I know are from what the manual said which was mostly about how to avoid stains on the doll from the wig and clothes and void tangles in the wig so I appreciate the tips. Since getting the Miku doll, I read the stickied guide but it was mostly about buying dolls so any other resources on doll care would be helpful.
Anonymous No.49709838
>>49709754
Some doll care tips would be:
Avoid touching the face, make up can slowly degrade, rub off. Hold neck or ear area to move the head.
Stains from clothes or even black threads on the clothes can happen, use a body suit or wear light colors, white , beige, light pink.
Avoid sun and heat, don't place near a window for long periods of time, It can yellow the vinyl doll skin color over time.
If you're taking photos, consider a doll stand to avoid fall damage and scratches to the doll's face.
Long wigs like Miku's wig is hard to maintain. Products and solutions for wigs can help but tangles will happen and worsen over time. Try to touch the wig as little as possible.
The outfits deteriorate over time, especially the pleather material in shoes no matter what you do. Avoid skin oil, grease, water, or getting it wet.

Quick review!
I've been eyeing this tote for awhile. I needed an easy to carry bag for my doll and I usually have my camera hanging around my neck. I'm trying to travel lightly with my hands mostly free when outside with my doll.

The tote is well constructed. No problems with zipper and sewing. There is almost no static electricity that I've noticed. I was worried that it would mess up the wigs. The clear panels are very nice and much more see-through than my photo glares would suggest. It looks better in person.

The only problems are size and balance. The size fits 1 DD perfectly. this is good because the doll will fit snugly and won't shift around much inside causing damage. The tote can fit 2 DDs, but it would be very tight and they will be in a kneeling pose. Its size is better for multiple MDDs.
The tote should be weight balanced while carrying it. If a doll is standing only on one end, the entire tote can sway to the heavier side and the doll can fall out! This only is a problem if the doll is standing.
The front panel can zip down. Its a nice feature, but not really that amazing with actual use.
The bag also has additional loops on top of the side clear panels for an additional shoulder carry strap that you can add. I personally would add the extra shoulder strap so to free up my hands.
The tote has a small pocket in the back. Its probably too small to put anything useful in. The inside of the tote has a single clear divider compartment that would fit a background picture or small objects.

Overall, the tote gets the job done and has some good features and it looks good.

Congrats on the first doll, and welcome to the club. Have a look at Alice's Collection for some decent and affordable clothing options. A nice coordinated outfit with one or two different skirts will probably see more use than a single more cosplay-y one. Or not, depends on what kind of vision you have for your new doll. Its not uncommon to see one elaborate outfit as the forever clothing for dolls.

Original asker, sorry for not replying earlier, I had work.
It really does look like the Nendo now that you mention it. I think that would probably be destructive if I wanted to transplant the hair, right? Also, I didn't realize Nendoroids' heads were really that small. I thought their chibi design gave them a fairly large head, but I guess it's just proportional to how small they are.

I probably wouldn't want to tear apart a figure to make another figure, but I also much prefer the manga design to the anime so I'm actually kind of conflicted. Anyway, thanks for clearing it up for me anons! You may just see me again, asking more stupid questions.

Nendoroids are made specifically so you can take the hair, head and body and switch them around freely with other nendoroids. Unless you're very heavy handed they won't break and there are quite a few second-party bodies and heads for them.

i'm thinking about getting into BJDs but i'm on a budget so i was considering buying from aliexpress and i don't have that much space so a 1/6 would be preferable, i have a few questions though.
is aliexpress reliable when it comes to dolls?
i like this kind of body but this is the only listing i have found and it's a 1/4
https://aliexpress.com/item/1005008342103568.html
all the 1/6s i have found have this shorter/younger build and although i don't hate it, it's not my fav kind of doll
https://aliexpress.com/item/1005008470791828.html

all i need to get going is a nude doll with eyes and hair as i know how to sew and i have big printers and sewing machines to get the patterns and make my own clothes

cheapness is the point, there is no reliability on aliexpress. for clothes and accessories it's probably fine, but for a doll body you should try to get something nicer that also doesn't rip off existing works. other anons have already mentioned good options that you should consider instead of some random crap from who knows where

no i haven't but i can imagine the issues of recasting without needing to read the archives as i have experienced that with other products, i also know of that vynil>resin but i don't know if the difference is that significant or if it's another case of "pay twice for a 1% increase" kind of advice i keep getting on other stuff (mainly tech).

>>49726430
my first instinct was aliexpress because they actually ship here and i have got a better service for the same chinese crap than amazon/ebay at way lower of a price but i was asking because BJDs are another world, the listings with pics i have seen don't seem particularly bad but they are not the kind of doll i want either.

i'm not in a hurry so i can save for a month or two if that means getting a way better doll, but the size is still important as 40cm is the tallest i can fit in my room but then she would be squished and not able to do many poses, i own a 30cm anatomical ball joint doll for art that seems to be a good size but is stiff as fuck and i also have two 13cm featureless "action figures" for art as well that are way more flexible that's way too small

by all means, i would recommend that you take the time to shop around, solidify your tastes, know your options, and save up for something that really fits what you want. rushing to buy something that you kind of want ends up wasting money and space. if you find that you like the hobby, youโ€™ll end up with more than one dollโ€ฆ

Vinyl generally does not have recasts. This is because the molds are metal and are very expensive to make. You need a factory to make them. Compared to resin dolls, which I believe use silicone to make the molds? It's much cheaper to make and you could even do it at home provided you buy the proper equipment and safety measures. Vinyl isn't better than resin or vice versa, it's ultimately up to preference. I like and own both.

Vinyl is lighter than resin, and it's easier to find replacement parts for most vinyl dolls since there aren't many vinyl brands (Dollfie, Obitsu, Smartdoll, Imomodoll are the big ones). They have an outer shell that gives them their appearance, and a plastic internal skeleton, the skeleton is what allows them to move. If you're on a budget, Imomodoll is your best bet. They have a 1/4 and 1/6 size. The bodies are fiddly though, but wrapping joints with washi tape will help a lot at least for the 1/4. I'm unfamiliar with the 1/6 ones.

Resin is heavier. Imagine the material as a very thick ceramic pot, but slightly less fragile, and it's plastic. That's the closest analogy I can think of for someone who hasn't held a resin doll irl before. Like the other anons said, there are many recasts on Aliexpress. It's easier to make resin recasts than vinyl since it's literally just hard solid pieces strung together, so the recaster can just make a mold using the pieces. There's infinite variety with resin dolls, and many more body types and skin tones than there are vinyl.

Then there are some inbetween dolls. There are strung dolls made of PVC instead of resin, so the material is closer to a very thick piece of plastic. If you're familiar with amiibos the material feels like that.

Then there's also Tinyfox, which is also PVC, but uses an internal skeleton like vinyl dolls. I also don't think the outer shell is really removable.

What is your budget? If you like the look of the first doll and want to avoid a recast, I would suggest Tinyfox 1/6 dolls which are around 30 cm tall. You can buy a full doll with clothes, eyes, and wig for around $150. Their faces are painted, so you don't have to worry about painting it or paying more for a faceup, and they look pretty much identical to the stock photos. The default clothes they come with can stain, but since you sew that shouldn't be an issue. You could look into taking clothing commissions as well. Depending on where you live, buying through a reseller like Newcloversinging may be cheaper than buying them on Aliexpress.

Where are you located, if you don't mind me asking? This hobby is more global than you'd expect, so we can guide you in the right direction for options for your country specifically. Also, I think that there are a lot of good affordable options these days that you don't have to settle for recasters. Moral dilemma of buying bootlegs aside, you're kinda stuck with those dolls since no one is going to buy a secondhand bootleg, so if you decide this hobby isn't for you or maybe just the doll isn't the right size, you're shit outta luck.

I feel like we need an infographic at this point.
If you buy recasts and post them online, you run the risk of
>being blocked by legitimate owners, who want nothing to do with a recast owner
>being blocked by faceup artists, other artists, doll artists, and costume artists, who want nothing to do with a recast owner
>being blackballed from the hobby completely
>being unable to sell the recast and recoup costs secondhand because fakes of copyrighted dolls are banned from places like ebay
>being unable to join many discords and communities which also frown on recasts

think carefully before proceeding. The doll market is SATURATED with sellers. You CAN own a good, real doll secondhand and from legitimate companies.

I have never seen a recast owner commission a custom faceup for their recast head. Custom faceups start at like $100 for anything that doesn't look like a toddler smashed markers on the head too, and the highly detailed ones go for $300+.

Similarly, I've seen very competent faceup artists have schizo meltdowns and accuse other artists of copying their style. Americans, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. All with varying success and skill. Though it does seem like the more competent the artist the greater the meltdown. Just a month or so ago I saw a Korean artist flip out on twitter because some random girl drew her doll. Thinking that they'd willingly work on a recast is delusional.

People be like "it'd be nice to have a skin tone darker than vanilla icecream" and get told to fuck off there's legit dark skin dolls. Said legit options are either out of stock for years, look like their faces are melting, or you have to pay $97USD more on the base price. I'm used to being fucked over cause I'm Australian, which also means I'm used to pirating or buying knock offs so I don't have to remortgage my house for a hobby purchase, real nice of the bjd community to make a handy list of recast stores to avoid.

I mean, you can buy them. Nobody's going to stop you, you're an adult with money and you're not going to get sued for simply buying a doll. It's just ridiculous to expect people who openly say "hey, I don't support recasts and won't interact with you if you buy them" to interact with you and cry and complain when they ignore you like some posters in these threads do, just how it's ridiculous for people to try and force others to stop buying recasts. If you don't do that, then it doesn't matter. People who are anti recasts and people who think recasts are fine likely aren't going to change their minds ever. And if you're looking for community, there are still pro recast people you can befriend.

The darker resin tones cost more because it is physically more difficult to manufacture them and they are more prone to defects in both casting and processing after the fact. The more pigment you put into the resin, the more potential there is for things to go awry. It sounds like bullshit, but there's an underlying reason for why, and it applies not just to human skintones but fantasy skintones as well. With industries producing goods in a larger volume, they can eat that cost, but since dolls are largely produced by either One Guy or A Few Guys in a workshop somewhere and the order of "fancy color" over "default resin color" might be in the single digits, the cost is passed to the consumer. Artists deserve a living wage for the work that they do, but times are rough and when even the barest fucking essentials cost an unreasonable amount, everything else goes out the window.

Beyond that, recasts and authentic works are what they are and the people who buy them have their reasons, and so on. They each have a community. Instead of complaining that the other group has excluded you, make friends among those who embrace you. There are bigger arguments to spend one's energy on at the end of the day.

I've always held on to this idea wherever I go: People are not always going to like what I like.
From the most normal hobbies, to the smallest niche, this always holds true one way or another. I've always had trouble fitting in anywhere, so it never left the forefront of my mind.
Just because I don't fit 100%, doesn't mean I can't enjoy a group's vibe or the way they enjoy the hobby. I'm relegated to lurking more often, but that's not as bad as it seems.

There is nothing wrong with recasts.
Best bang for the money.
I have two of them now, you're mad? Are you going to cry?
What you need to know is that I got those doll because they were CHEAP.
I wouldn't have bough them otherwise.

I don't need their validation.

For all your concerns, there is always China.
>being blackballed from the hobby completely
LOL. Read above.
>being unable to sell the recast and recoup costs secondhand because fakes of copyrighted dolls are banned from places like ebay
Good thing Ebay isn't the only selling platform on the internet then.
>being unable to join many discords and communities which also frown on recasts
OH NO! THE HORROR!

Yeah recast buyers who bitch that people don't want to talk to them are also funny as fuck. IDK maybe I'm too old for this drama and money dick waving? It reminds me of old school playground console wars or kids getting into punch ups about whether they have Pokemon or YuGiOh cards. Or I think it's that I don't care so much about the 'brand name' and moreso about what character or OC the doll is representing, I want to talk about that and why you chose certain looks or photo placement and accessories rather than how you have this legit Gucci bag or whatever.
Anonymous No.49747765 >>49748492
It's not about having a brand name, it is about supporting the artists who make the things we collect so that they may continue creating their art. This isn't a situation like Mattel, Pokemon, or Gucci. These aren't made by massive brands with factories, these are made by small teams of people, sometimes one sole individual person, who is making art as their sole source of income. If you don't want to support that, that's fine. But you are conflating two very different things with your analogy.

Yes, we gathered that. It isn't about you, it's about newcomers who don't know anything about the hobby. They may care about the aforementioned.

Pretty much everyone has a unique body shape, even comparing two Azones or DDs. Their sizes aren't so different that they can't share individual pieces, though over the last year I've made an effort to give them unique clothing styles.

Pic is what I picked up and who's getting it. Everyone had a budget of 50 bucks to make up an outfit and I'm happy with the picks. Well other than Hibiki, but she's always been consistently inconsistent.
