I think there's always been a bit of controversy surrounding it (eg its exclusion from korean releases of diva games). the idea that everybody just saw it as "wow cool song" is because you spent your childhood in english youtube comment sections.
As VOCALOID becomes more of a phenomenon outside of Japan its natural that cultural differences to this degree happen. Though I'll say I don't think people care enough about historical grievances like this to cause zako level controversies, considering it's still in project sekai in everywhere but korea and thats where all the whiny new fans get all their music

From videos it doesn't look like much if any difference other than maybe having the background behind her visible but there usually isn't much going on there that can't also be put into the screen.

Do holograms look just as awkward if you view them from an angle as the LEDs do or do they have more depth with different perspectives rendered for different physical viewing angles?
