Okay, no offense, but I am almost done with Higurashi and it feels like a shitty, chinky Twin Peaks. You have a quaint, small town filled with interesting characters and what appears to be a straightforward murder mystery but there turns out to be supernatural shit and secret deranged government research. Not saying they can't both exist but I am not impressed.

I like comparing Higurashi and TP myself but it's all completely different, there's a group of kid main characters and no agent Cooper (no Akasaka is definately not Cooper), you learn to doubt the village itself as early as chapter 1 while in TP the town is strange but from day 1 always has it's own trustworthy and good element. TP goes into the surreal in a way that Higurashi never does. Higurashi hones in on little details in a way that TP doesn't (probably cause it's a written medium and can have you read articles for hours).

"Why" is extremely important in Sherlock's and Poirot's mysteries. In fact there's a certain Christie novel I absolutely love cause I actually guessed it based on the motive, figuring out the killer in that one was 90% motive.
I don't know what "health" of the world you're talking about but detectives are there to pick up the pieces of a tragedy that's already happened and piece it back together for justice. Famous detectives like Holmes show plenty of sympathy and care, but they can't restore what's lost. They can't do anything but find the truth, avenge the victim and protect who's left because they can't use magic to put people back together.

Umineko aged poorly when you realize that Kinzo is pretty much the Japanese Epstein — private island and rape included — with Beatrice complicating the situation in Rokkenjima by unveiling the bomb mechanism that blows up everything and everyone, including a little girl. And somehow, we are supposed to find the idea of the Golden Land romantic. Hell, EP8 straight up thinks that even freaking Japanese Epstein deserves a happy ending.

When you really think about it, Erika is right for wanting to find out the truth behind this mess and not endorsing the fantasy crap, nor deluding herself into thinking that this tale deserves a magical and happy interpretation. Episode 7 of the manga basically answers all previous episodes with some extra text and iamges Will's scene where he destroys illusions gets.

Episode 8 manga then reveals the actual real world backstory and truth of the incident. Also includes scenes that frame the entire series (like most events being portrayed as Ange's dream after she falls on the protective net, or whole set up for Episode 1 with Beatrice awakening in the Golden Land after killing herself and then meeting a Battler that was "empty" who is then filled in with Episode 1 memories as the game starts, which is why it feels like Meta-Battler is pulled from Episode 1 specifically even though that isn't even the real world)

I think Umineko's popularity in Japan was always going to fall apart though. Not revealing the truth was just the last fuse for complaints, but in general the change of direction of the quesiton arcs, dropping the idea of Battler leaving back for his family and focusing on understanding Beatrice just didn't resonate with VN readers at the time at all. Its popularity already was falling through episodes 5/6. People loved Beatrice as a villain, not a weak victim.

Gerokasu did well enough in Japan to get a sequel. Also, Gou did revive Higurashi's mainstream popularity in Japan even if by the end of Sotsu many fans disliked it. We're still getting new -Sotsu-, specifically, branded merchandising years after the show ended (although it's mostly merch that could exist without the show at all aside from using the Akio Watanabe designs).

He should have included giant robots in Ciconia rather than Gauntlets if he wanted to go sci-fi.
