A Japanese friend of mine from university jokingly told me that if I ever wanted to move to Japan his brother could get me through immigration by giving me a job at his restaurant. Apparently they think having a native English speaker on their staff will make them more appealing to tourists and increase revenue. Even though it was a joke I told him I'd be interested. Yesterday he sent me a message saying that his brother loves the idea and wants to hire me. I'd have to buy my plane ticket myself, but they'd house me for what I understand is an extremely low rent to be relatively close to Tokyo (I'd be in Chiba for 30000 JPY a month). I'd be getting paid as well obviously. I don't know anything about the Japanese immigration process, but he made it seem like it wouldn't be a big deal and that other restaurants have been doing the same thing for a while. This is not a high class restaurant, it's basically a tourist trap.

Is this a bad idea? I can't speak or read Japanese at all. I have virtually zero understanding of Japanese culture outside of basic rules like don't talk on the trains. I honestly don't even watch or like anime, I just figured this would be the best board to ask on. I think it'd be cool to live in a new country for a bit.

Seems like you just answered your own question. Japan is not like the UAE in which 95% of the population are foreign temporary workers in it for the money that never leave their English speaking bubble. If you have no interest in Japan and its culture and have no real intention of learning Japanese then this is just a miserable time waiting to happen which you'll later on try to cope with by convincing yourself that you "lived" in Japan but all you did was waste your own time and money in something clearly not suited for you.

Yes. I'm 85% sure you'll end up hating it there.

that's an amazing opportunity anon, you should go for it unless you have something serious tying you down. worst case, you'll fly home disappointed after a year or two of new experiences, growing as a person. best case, you could have the time of your life and decide to settle down there. many people here would kill for a chance like that, don't let our jealousy hold you back

How much would I actually need to use Japanese on a daily basis to get by? It'd be hard to make friends, but I could at least go for walks and not have to interact with anyone. Using the train might be hard at first but I could probably manage. I managed to live in Madrid for a months without knowing any Spanish.

That's basically the mentality I have too. The only thing I'm worried about is how a year's gap on my resume will effect my future employment.

But enough about bad cultural decisions in a world of wich the more time is passing, being global is a must...
And guess what, more people are sick of this "but japan only fucking cares about their own lands only" bulshit. Eat shit as well.

you can get surprisingly far without any nowadays, especially in and around tokyo. dragged my family with me once, even my old retired mom could navigate with all their english signs and english-speaking staff at most stations & stores. you'll also inevitably pick up some useful phrases, especially working in a restaurant
>a year's gap
to show initiative, gain experience, learn a language, build human connections, etc etc? no employer is gonna hold that against you if you know how to spin it, they love stories like that, makes you seem nice and bougie

Don't do it, the Japanese are cruel and racist to all foreigners, immigration there is way more complicated and difficult than what your friend made it seem. They most likely will never make you an official legal citizen and if you don't know the language and customs well then people will treat you like dirt.

>wouldn't be a big deal and that other restaurants have been doing the same thing for a while
Yeah, because they're hiring foreigners who are already here either as students or on some other form of residency which allows for part time work up to a certain amount of hours.
https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/long/index.html
>restaurant staff
You have 2 realistic options as far as actually getting your visa + COE + residence card.
1. "Technical Intern" visa. Your country has slave labor agreements with Japan and you can go through an agency. This is mostly for factory workers.
2. Student visa working part time.
You won't be able to get an actual work visa unless you get hired for a non-slave labor job, such as being the chef or the store manager, both of which require actual experience and academic background related to the role which you need to provide proof of.
Your friend will not be able to make a case to directly hire you, a foreigner, as restaurant staff.
You are either larping or your friend has no idea what it takes to hire a foreigner.

t. live and work in Japan, hire locals as part-time/contract workers for my business because sponsoring a foreigner's visa is a pain in the ass and hiring someone as permanent employee/会社員 is an even bigger pain in the ass for small businesses.

its mostly indonesian and filipino foreign workers, i didnt see many other bangladeshis or indians in tokyo
>What about all the "Western" (woke) politics that are apparently hip over there?
i believe most japanese are moderately opposed to immigration, theyve been insular people since 1633, works good for them.

None of that is true and we all know how bad woke culture can be, it's not really ant-racist.

Recent made Gaijin here, like others said, if you have to interest in japanese culture and language, don't do it
and even if you are interested I would recommend getting the very least of the language learning as possible before coming over

Which Japanese culture? The one in the 80s? The 90s? Reiwa? Showa? Edo period subsistence farming? Why aren't women blackening their teeth? Where's the open pits of feces used to collect manure for farming? Like 90% of Japan's high-rise infrastructure was built after the 90s and most Japanese can't read books in their original form without a modern translation. He could learn enough words to take orders and work in Japan if they need someone to fill a position clearly the business owner is fine with it. If Japan even remotely gave a shit about protectionism they wouldn't import all of their food and energy. They're the 2nd biggest importer of food globally.

Most of what you're saying isn't true. And though they're not as closed up as they were before the 1800s the Japanese are still very racist towards foreigners. OP will live trough hell if he doesn't at least learn the language and culture and even if OP does they could still eat him alive over there just for being a foreigner.

Are you retarded or something? Of course it is a terrible idea to move to a country where you do not speak the local language. Real life is not going to be like a romance anime where the mysterious foreigner is going to get the girl or something, your live would be miserable.
