Muenzukan and the Road of Reconsideration are notable for their many ghosts. In Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, ghosts are stated to be extremely dangerous with any touch from them "beckoning death,". Many ghosts do not realize they are dead. While there are also dangerous youkai who stalk these areas in hopes of finding an outsider to eat, the ghosts are dangerous to them as well so there will only be so many.

Ghosts are stated to be indistinguishable from humans to the untrained eye. But there may be ways for the trained eye to identify them. Many cultures have believed dogs to be capable of seeing ghosts and other spiritual entities. The Aztecs even believed that if you rubbed a dog's eyes and then your own with the same fingers, you would gain the ability as well. In this situation I'd imagine the risk of getting killed by a ghost outweighs the risk of infection.

there isn't all too much i can do in a month to 'prepare', it isn't like i'm going to change from a suburban student into an avid survivalist that can live offgrid without society servicing my every need. maybe i'll come up with a pity plea that'll lead to one of the religions taking me in as a refugee but i doubt that'll do much seeing i speak zero japanese and can only really read it. if i were thrown into the woods in the middle of nowhere i'd just die - i have no experience navigating by stars or anything else that isn't a memory from exploring the area when i wasn't worrying about being rumia's next meal

Ghost aren't exactly predatory to human beings, despite having the capacity to one shot them with a mere touch. The chances of you meeting a friendly one that will help you reach the village are actually pretty high. Also, since The Forest of Magic is close by, you might be lucky enough to find a wanderous magician around, doing magician things, and they might also assist you. Of course, this is me being optimistic.

If anything, the youkai desperate enough to be there, plus the Hakurei barrier having a liking to trap human criminals, are your main concerns. But Muenzukan still remains as a very bad spot, being too far away from the village is already bad in itself, and then you add all that bad stuff.

Meanwhile, being placed deep into Youkai mountain is certain death. Not only no one there is going to help you, they are also going to actively hunt you down just to make an example out of you. Also, if you have done mountain hiking, you just know that terrain can be your worst enemy as well. Not only you are hiding from wolf tengu and kappa, you are risking the breaking of an ankle or the entire leg if you aren't careful. There's no room for optimism here, you are dead the moment a wolf tengu catches your scent.

You have to remember that wolf tengu are superhumanly fast, so if you are in a situation inside the mountain where you actually have to reach the shrine before getting killed and the doggos know you are around, chances are you are not going to make it

Guess I'll pack up all my referential books on occult topics and a weapon or two. Maybe get a solar powered charger for a phone and laptop too. Not sure how long I'll be there so I'll also take the basic stuff you generally want on a trip like some changes of clothes and stuff like toothpaste. Not really sure what I'll do once I'm there so I suppose my best bet is to try to make my way to the human settlement then figure it out from there.

Come to think of it, I probably don't have any kind of money that they would accept since I don't imagine they accept dollars or even modern yen, so I should also bring a bunch of random but useful shit with me that I could sell or trade. I don't have anything like gold or jewelry but if I know for certain that I'm going then maybe it would be worth it for me to buy some of those things to take.
