At the end of yesterday's episode, Takeshi reminisced about his film Dolls and its lead actress Kanno Miho who was guesting on his show
>After the release of Dolls, I was invited to a film festival held by Putin in Russia. They me there was a party after the festival, but I was warned that I should never say anything bad about Putin. Anyway, from the hotel to everything else they were checking me-
Tokoro then cut him off

The Artistic Suicide Trilogy is very underrated, even among the Kitano followers I've interacted with, and that's probably due to the shift from the 90s Kitano Blue, his trademark. The more colorful theme was suited for the 2000s era of the Japanese filmmaking scene imho.

Just finished watching Shinji Soumai's Yuki no Danjou (Lost Chapter of Snow) and I'm not really sure but it just gives me pro grooming vibes. I'm okay with films ending on an icky note if they show self awareness of how fucked up that shit is but this was not the case here. Idk there was a message about how adults are hypocrites who exploit children and how children eventually confront this in an attempt to come of age, but it just gets diluted and corrupted in the final act.
Really good cinematography tho

Makes you realize how drizzling shit the LDP are and how much people are fed up with them, so much that they're supporting a populist party. Supporting Sanseito and other conservative opposition parties won't be as bad as the late-stage Abe/Post-Abe LDP years. Hell, there could be a chance, no matter how small, that they might actually do something positive.

no one is targeting those as long as they're not doing something illegal
the issue is the many misconducts and crimes that the gaijins do since the easing of the immigration laws and the floods of tourists arriving since post-covid as well as the preferential treatments for gaijins at the expense of the japanese

Random question for those of you that watch live broadcast through iptv or some other form of internet/local television; Do you have any experience with live AI translation tools? I was reading a github comment on one of the jp-iptv m3u files that I frequently use, and one of the users claims that AI closed caption is now a thing. I tried running a google search on how-to for the KODI media player I'm using but no luck.

Just curious if it's worth it, and if something like an amazon fire stick is powerful enough for live streaming + AI translation.

Also, to make sure I'm still on topic, pic related is one of my favorite modern series to watch. Hoping for more seasons of this gentle slice of life programming.

Nagisa a cute and a delight to have on your screen, but that's exclusively on variety shows. Casting her for this movie was a mistake. She comes off as a joke and not scary. Well, even if they chose a better actress, it won't improve shit. I tried really hard to concentrate on the story, but the content was so utterly boring that I couldn't keep my eyes open. If you've been watching Sono's works since his first film Love Songs in the 1980s, you'll realize that they evolve with the eras and the times they are released in. He always reflects the cultures, the trends, the styles and the social issues that pertain a decade. Just like in the 80s, the 90s and the 2000s, Sono had both dark works, light works and experimental works in the 2010s. People mainly focus on his dark works and then get turned off by his lighter and experimental works from the 2010s because they're more accessible, not realizing that he's been doing such styles every decade. And especially in the 2010s, with iconic films like Cold, Fish, Himizu and Guilty of Romance that showcase the dark themes he's most famous for, he made subdued films like The Land of Hope, mainstream-y films like Shinjuku Swan and experimental films like The Whispering Star. I just hope you don't compare them to his darker works and judge them unfairly. And if you haven't yet, watch his lighter stuff from pre-2010s to prepare yourself.

Sono is truly an artist of mysterious intention. Most people who'll watch Cold Fish will be absorbed by the violent and gore-filled scenes. On the surface, it looks like a meditation on meaningless violence and what it means to push someone over the edge, but it never feels like it's just there to be shocking. It all fits the depressing, nihilistic narrative. Thereโ€™s some sort of thesis statement here on the love triangle relationship between sex, power, and respect. Not to say that this film isnโ€™t precise, in fact, I think itโ€™s perfect, itโ€™s just mysterious. Which is fun because itโ€™s also so simple, in terms of structure, visuals, and even narrative too, as it's based on a real life serial killer couple and the crimes they committed. Sono had a number of minamalist moments in previous works, but I love this minimalist version of Sono the most. Minimalist in form but still so absurdist in tone. Such a difficult balance to strike but itโ€™s done so well in this film that you imagine thereโ€™s no other way one could possibly make a film.

Sono Sion revamped the very foundation of commercial tv dramas with Minna! ESPer Dayo. And to be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Minna! ESPer Dayo. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of Japanese culture and television revisionism, most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also the typical Sono's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his cinematography - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature and pinku films, for instance. Sono fanatics understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny and pervy- they say something deep about life. The film version however isn't as good, solely because they replaced best girl Kaho with that ugly Filipina.

This looks like something out of ใ‚ดใƒƒใƒ‰ใ‚ฟใƒณ, wonder if it's produced by Sakuma. Gekidan Hitori and Yahagi are there. Also some of the AV actresses that appeared there are ใ‚ดใƒƒใƒ‰ใ‚ฟใƒณ regulars.

Toyoda announced this film, I don't know, three years ago? Since then, he made a new short films trilogy starring Shibusawa Kiyohiko between 2022 and 2024 and for the love of me I cannot find it anywhere. It was screened at a film festival in Australia around two months ago, though. Since this is his first feature film in 7 years, I'm hoping it gets a proper release next year. Good to see his all of his former collaborators are starring in it, especially Kubozuka.

Can anybody see if they can find this episode of Yo nimo Kimyo na Monogatari? I've got a thread up on /wsr/ but no hits yet. I've been looking for ages. It's close to the top on my "lost" media wishlist.
