The Artistic Suicide Trilogy is very underrated, even among the Kitano followers I've interacted with, and that's probably due to the shift from the 90s Kitano Blue, his trademark. The more colorful theme was suited for the 2000s era of the Japanese filmmaking scene imho.

Anyone ever tried getting a mouseover dictionary working with movie subtitles? I have snagged physical copies of 人志松本のすべらない話 on a Japanese friend's suggestion, but now I'm wondering if I'll just have to look up every work I don't know. I think browsers can run video files, but who knows if that includes the subtitles attached.

Just finished watching Shinji Soumai's Yuki no Danjou (Lost Chapter of Snow) and I'm not really sure but it just gives me pro grooming vibes. I'm okay with films ending on an icky note if they show self awareness of how fucked up that shit is but this was not the case here. Idk there was a message about how adults are hypocrites who exploit children and how children eventually confront this in an attempt to come of age, but it just gets diluted and corrupted in the final act.
