As equally pissed as I am, I imagine he came out of retirement for Heaven Burns Red because it would've been infinitely less work to shit out the amount of text a gacha game has than it would've been to write even half/a third of Kanon and the Tactics games before that.
Also I admit I haven't paid any attention to his credits after I found out he was "working on it", but I highly doubt he's composing any music for it on top of that.

Well, Key's VN are starting to feel more like semi passion projects rather than purely money making ventures, like for them, producing a VN is more about brand identity, since their main revenue comes from gacha games anyway
