i think the whole reason why my jp progress was slow up till now is because I focused too much on reading and not enough on listening. been doing only listening (aside from reviews) for 3 weeks and the gains are noticeable. in the end, reading is slow as hell and as a result the number of repeat patterns you're exposed to for your brain to parse is also much lower. thought splitting time spent listening/reading to 50/50 would be a good idea but 90/10 or 80/20 is probably best.

can you really reach a level in japanese pre-fluency where you can just correctly guess meanings of new vocab from context?
when I learned english, it was definitely possible, but I think that was because english bears a strong resemblance to my native language.
with japanese, there are so many homonyms and such little phonetic variety that everything is just gibberish to me until I take a look at it. in german/english it feels like the sounds themselves tend to be tied to a meaning that you can somewhat intuit, whereas a そう or へい or げん just means nothing to me until I at least see a kanji. only exception maybe being にん. i guess that's probably where pitch accent perception comes into play and that gives you the ability to distinguish the meanings by ear even when the word is unknown. but I think at that point you've prob already reached fluency.
