Most of the god artifacts already lose most of their effects when not worshipping the corresponding god and most of the pets have alternatives.
BIggest I can think of are the earth hammer, ring of void, and double militant.

Honestly? A lot. Even discounting all faction effects, the god weapons outside of lucky dagger and kogitsunemaru which remove about all enchantments are amazing. You've mentioned earth hammer, but elemental staff's 50% mana is huge. Holy lance and wind's wrap give 15 resists of multiple types. Muramasa and warmonger are still pretty good weapons. The ranged weapons don't lose anything. Kumiromi scythe does get depowered some.

Each weapon trains its relevant stat so in a meta consideration leveling up ALL the weapons is the way to go.

But in reality I'd say just level up the weapons you like, preferably having a "main" weapon and then maybe two or so backup weapons you train. It's good to be open to change, because you might get some super amazing weapon drop in a nefia that you haven't trained but now want to use. In such a situation, you can power train and level that weapon with platinum and potential until it's good. Also skill bonuses from equipment is super legit in Elin, so feel free to abuse talismans if you get a neat weapon.

Also you can dual wield different weapons so that's a neat consideration. Shout out to Gandalf maxers who dual wield a sword and a staff.

Thing to note is that your stats carry you a lot in both the hit and damage formulas, and weapon-agnostic skills like marksman and tactics do carry over, so swapping weapons, even to one you haven't used before, isn't completely crippling.

Combat skills also earn bonus xp based on skill level vs enemy level, so there's a catch up mechanic even if it isn't as obvious as it is with spells.

The big issue with nightly builds are mod compatibility where sometimes shit gets broken and has to be removed until a fix is made.

The base skill potentials they get mesh with Swordsage pretty well. The base stat potentials aren't great but that can easily be compensated for with food. Skill potential is much harder to raise, especially when you start getting high up in level.

Other than that the increased spell xp gain will really pull through later on. Nefu do get a speed penalty when wearing equipment in the waist slot though. From what I can tell equipping tails doesn't trigger the speed penalty but I haven't found a tail worth wearing yet.

I've tried it. Wraith/sage works in perfect synergy. But I was worshiping Horome without godwhoring, so I didn't have any serious healing or Itzpalt's mana boost.
The build is pretty solid anyway, though. If something can't kill you fast, you won't die no matter what. You can win any fight of attrition.
Wraith's small HP pool works as a shield if your pets have healing spells, even weak ones.
As a wraith, you have to save mana, but talismans let you spam high level spells as long as you have books to charge them. You also get double spell exp (but no casting exp).

Possible cons:
Without Itzpalt you have no way to quickly heal your mana. This is the biggest drawback by far. You don't get a Japanese themed revenant/ghost race and a Japanese themed katana-wielding spellsword class to worship some old dude who screwed everything up. You want your Japanese themed kitsune mother-wife.
Wraith has so little HP that it's much harder and more dangerous for you to train through overcasting, burning spells you don't need for stats and tanking overflow damage for magic capacity and armor training. I did it anyway.
Same with overworking. On the one hand, you have a lot of mana and any mana damage is halved on low hp (exhausted from crafting included), on the other - you can't restore mana while exhausted and healing pets can only heal your life which is pretty low.
Light eater 1 is ass, but not too bad, I guess.

Stack buffs on yourself, use Weakness on your enemy if you're not doing enough damage in melee, maybe alongside bane so they aren't hitting you as often. So far when I'm casting these spells they last nearly 40 turns, and they're like level 14. And train up some basic element spells to exploit those weaknesses when bosses are impossible to hurt in melee.

Keep a large bag/backpack for potions, another for scrolls, as backups, or even your main goto for buffs so you can keep your mana high. Buy any potion buffs, and heals you see, use em for the tough battles.
