To my understanding, Touhou seems to survive off its established reputation more than anything. So it feels like if ZUN doesn't do anything illegal or hateful that nothing will affect his creative liberties if people keep coming in.

EoSD, PCB, and IN had the best fucking writing. EoSD even comes out on top as it was way too witty and still had PC-98's innocent charm. Honestly, I feel the lore has been convoluted for too long because ZUN can't just settle down how strong certain characters are, how important certain events are, if he wants stakes or not.
Nothing ever matters or happens no matter how important ZUN makes something seems, even if character went through a lot of pain, it's never shown on them or impacted because ZUN has no interest in exploringthese characters as actual characters.
Hence why the silly writting was the best for me, it was the best fit for ZUN's insistence on not having stakes. ZUN wants to present Gensokyou as a whimsical place but also as a dark place where humans get eaten, etc, I always found the lore to be all over the place, just forced into certain situations to fit what ZUN wants to explore, it's always been that way but ZUN teases stakes more and more when you know nothing will ever come out of it and status qou will remain. ZUN should decide if he wants Touhou to be silly quirky story without stakes or emotional involvement, or the opposite,b back then it was clear what Touhou was, now he keeps teasing stakes that don't go anywhere, plots get more and more convoluted, more complicated, but in the end none of it means anything because nothing happens and will never go anywhere and it's kind of frustrating.
