She was considered a god of immortality back in CiLR and in FS where Akyuu says that she's been praying to her in the hopes of extending her lifespan, but ZUN's changed her ability slightly now that she's an actual character to be the ability to halt something's changes.

It might also be metacommentary about Touhou itself changing. Maybe old man ZUN wants to bring the series back to the past, this game itself felt like a collage of various aesthetic elements of other Touohu games, although I'd say they were well integrated into a single whole.
I know its a stretch, but I'll take any chance that we'll get colored endings again in the near future.

Unsure. I don't feel any nostalgia for old touhou, in the sense that I believe "new touhou bad, old touhou better". Only thing I guess I miss is that in 6, 7 and 8 dialogue and writting really felt better and had funnier banter, but otherwise Fossilized wonders ranks pretty high on my list of favorites honestly.

This isn't directly related to Ariya, but I want to say a few things.
I don't feel nostalgia for old Touhou, I didn't play those games when they released, but in a few of the games, including all the early Windows ones, there are certain idiosyncrasies that aren't present in most of the newer ones, FW almost touches on them.
The early windows music also had a unique air to it. Take Tomboyish Girl in Love, the theme of a character I don't care about from a game I don't particularly like, it is so simple yet so aesthetically rich. The FW music was really good, but it was pretty complex all around.
FW was the first game in a while who's additions to the lore didn't feel like they destroyed the world's sense mystery, LoLK was also decent in that regard.
I also much prefer the earlier UI. I think the UI design peaked with SA and it was all downhill from there, but I have a feeling those aren't coming back any time soon.

The reason 1st gen Windows design is so liked isn't simply because of the frills, it's because the characters' costumes reflected their personality. This is why Wriggle doesn't have frills, that wouldn't fit her. I don't think frills fit Ariya either. There should also be more details suggesting her connection to rocks.
