Tougo was hilarious, enjoyed him the most. Rei wasn’t bad either, but he’s way better in Side Z. He and Haruma are locked routes though, so you gotta clear everyone else first.

After learning my kana, some vocab (probably less than 100, depends on how we're counting) and some really 101 basic particles (は, も, location に/で, etc), I dove into Under the Moon and went full jisho + google translate (mostly for the times where I can't read like 80% of it and just want a jist of what's being said) mode. I won't pretend like I understood everything that was going on but I think it was definitely worth the struggle for basic vocab, common sentence structures (outside of shit like "X は Y"), and really common kanji. Maybe I should try reading it again after I'm done with my TMGS4 runs.

Personally, I got fed up with looking up every word and resorted to grinding a bunch of kanji words in order of frequency. Now it's quite comfy and I have no regrets. Though in my case, I used other types of JP media for "immersion" and my listening comprehension was decent already... So most of the words weren't truly new, all I had to learn were the readings.

Haven't tried reading a particularly difficult one yet. I'd inevitably run into some challenges with those, since my grinding focus was on more frequent words for general coverage. For something like Ooe, it was like 4 months of grinding until I felt a big difference in comfort level. I still had to look up words, but just enough for a smooth experience overall.
