Renko has something going for her, which Iwanagahime doesn't have. It's the fact that she's just a girl. This might seem unintuitive, and of course Renko is not "just a girl", but someone very special - but let me explain.

To marry a goddess like Iwanagahime, you would have to become very godly yourself. In Japan, this means extreme ascetism. I think to prepare yourself as a husband for a goddess you would have to do something like full nine months of increasingly severe ascetism. Nine months because it's the human gestation period, a kind of full rebirth. The things you would have to do would be like four hours of sleep, constantly chanting prayers to her, constant purification with cold water and an ever increasingly strict diet untill at the end you would be eating just pine needles or nothing. It's very easy to post about Iwanagahime on 4chan, but few have what it would take to really become her husband.

It's an interesting concept, and makes Maribel and Renko a lot more interesting, even though they were cool already. Both have an outsider's perspective on Japan and Gensokyo, but in different ways.
This also connects the Hifuu albums to DiPP somewhat. One has a mystery novel structure with Hearn's idea of a seemingly carefree land with dangers hiding in the mist incorporated on top of that, one has the Kwaidan style mysteries as a structure with retrofuturism and cosmism incorporated on top of that. At least that's my perspective.

Well, I guess it makes it easier for me to imagine her as a real person. Now that I have been exposed to how Japanese people really look like, talk and act, it's much easier to think what Renko would be like as a real human being. This basicaly applies to all fictional characters who are natively Japanese though. It's easier to tell when a character is breaking norms. Social norms of course change over time, and people act different with their close friends, but I think Renko is probably kinda special even for her time.

Having been to Japan, I feel like the dystopian elements of Hifuu come out much stronger. Outside of the urban core, the country is incredibly lush, and it's crazy to think of a world where Japan has been basicaly completely deforested. Something really awful must have happened to the world. Combined with how Renko describes the state of science as having stagnated, I totaly understand the desire to escape somewhere, anywhere.

Also, I can totaly understand Renko becoming friends with Maribel. The Japanese I talked to bit more in depth always reacted super positively when someone showed actual interest towards their culture and history.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they would be 125 years into the future be as big drinkers as they are today.

Mostly I think going to Japan put a lot of context in Touhou in general.

What do you mean "mythos"? The guy rolled Renko twice in a row in the wife threads. Twice. The odds are extremely low. Not only that, he started having dreams of Renko. One of these dreams included her showing him a diagram that looked like multiple Schwarzchild diagrams stacked on top of each other. The poster was unfamiliar with the concept before, and it's related to black holes, time and the possibility of parallel dimensions existing. These things actually happened, as fantastic as they are. It's not "mythos", it's real history, and if you really wanted to dig for it, you could go through the renkoposts on warosu and piece it all together.

I think the mythos was supposed to be the collection of small details related to the idea of Maribel and Renko coming to stalk two guys, like the various ways they might have found out about their existence, how they'd try to make a first impression, what they specifically want to do, how they might try to get them to move to the future, and so on. Those were honestly really neat, probably the thing that carried the concept, and it's pretty amazing how quickly they emerged.

All album stories seem to be written to some degree around the songs in them. I suspect the next album will have 10 tracks, the Hifuu albums have always alternated between 11 and 10 tracks, and TJD had 11.
The tracks will also most likely be from 19 and 20, although it might also have some tracks from 16-18.5. I don't know what to make of the potential 16-19 track stories, but here are some ideas for some 20 tracks:
Sacred Forest/There's a Monster in the Woods - pretty obvious one, they go to a shrine's forest and find some creature that leads them along to further the story.
The Maiden Sinking into the Deep Sea of Memory - the title is pretty ambiguous, but it could work well for showing Maribel's dream adventures again. It's very LoLK-ish, so it could also work for them going to the Moon again.
Sacred Precincts of the Pyramid/Because I'm Used to Being the Last One Left ~ Stone Goddess - it could fit in a kind of NToJ2, there are a few pyramid-like structures around Japan, and Iwanagahime being an almost primordial deity, combined with the various archeological sites near Yatsugatake, and its connection to the Youkai Mountain, under which is located the world of the gods from NToJ. There's a lot you can do with this.
Fantastic Drift/Hallucination Atop a Bivalve - chasing after conspiracies is pretty stereotypical for the Hifuus, although that side is not shown enough imo. I'm not sure where the music of these two would fit in the album's overall movements though.
That being said, the stories sometimes relate to the track in more abstract ways, like track 6 from R35M.
Also, it will probably have at least 4 unique tracks, so it could go in a few ways.

Now, here's another possibility. MoF was largely skipped by the albums for some reason.
I think Maribel and Renko investigating the Suwa shrine and accidentally teleporting to the Moriya shrine would make for a good story. There's a lot of lore around the Moriya shrine that hasn't been fully explored, and Sanae makes everything she's in better. The way I specifically imagine such a story is that the two would be transported to the events of MoF, seeing the protag climbing up the mountain from afar, maybe talking to Sanae and Kanako a bit, or just spying on them. It would require a lot of landscape descriptions and subtilty in the dialog to not feel forced, but I trust that ZUN can make it.

If the story didn't have to stick to the game tracks, I wish it would be about time travel. Not necessarily about Maribel and Yukari's relation, more just about time travel in general. Something like them finding a physics manual somewhere which mentions time travel, they test to see if it works, weird stuff happens, they figure out what time travel model ZUN decides to follow, at the end of they send the book back in time for them from the past to find and read it.

In the story, Renko tells Maribel a lie to make a joke related to Kamakura, and Maribel references Hachiman, who is worshiped in Kamakura.
Usa shrine is one of the main Hachiman shrines, and The White Flag of Usa Shrine is Tewi's theme, Tewi's quite mischievous, and ZUN even calls the track playful and easygoing, like Renko in the story.
