It got mentioned a few times in threads but Genso Cup 2 is starting this weekend and continuing on over next Friday and next weekend. It’s basically meme divegrass but with Touhou teams instead of board teams.

It's a 12 team meme divegrass tournament with different Touhou themed teams involved, some are based on teams, some are based on music, some are based on offshoots like /cookie/ and /fumo/ others are pure meme teams like /honk/.

This weekend and next weekend (including a half day on Friday) starting at 1pm Eastern and 5pm UTC. Next Friday will be a later start +2 hours.

A deep dive meme team with the largest goal music export in the cup (links to some of the music in the roster: https://implyingrigged.info/wiki//2huremix/#Gens%C5%8D_2) captained by Alstroemeria Records and joined by music by some of the best Touhou music doujins from COOL&CREATE to Akatsuki Records (pictured) and Demetori.

A returning team from the first cup. All PC-98 era characters, references and memes captained by Mima. The fourth place team that advanced but lost to /izakaya/ in the third place playoff last time.

A newcomer to Genso Cup but a successful team in several other tournaments dedicated purely to 暁Records and Stack's music with 23 different songs represented in player form. Stack leads the team as captain as the team under new management seeks in their opening fixture tomorrow to finally win a match against /2huremix/ after two previous meetings and two previous defeats.

A dedicated Cookie team that has slowly been coming together for weeks and shown up a few times in threads. It's a first debut appearance in any competition and makes it's debut against /fumo/ in the first round of Genso Cup 2 fixtures. A new team and complete newcomer to virtual divegrass made in collaboration with the /fumo/ thread and a number of other helpers from the /jp/ divegrass team and others. A selection of 23 meme fumos and some elaborate player models, they make their debut against /cookie/ in the second match.
/honk/
Veterans of meme divegrass and the oldest and best established team in this. Last cup they nearly honked their way to victory only suffering one defeat but at the final hurdle in the grand final against /kishinjou/. Is it going to be second time lucky for /honk/ or the end of /honk/vangelion?
/izakaya/
A veteran of the last cup and several other tournaments dedicated to Mystia's Izakaya. One of the largest and most popular teams in the cup this is a fourth appearance for the team after their third place finish last time. The team roster is always changing and this time has several new debut players alongside well loved existing ones like Food War Now (pictured).
/kishinjou/
The reigning GC1 champions and a visually spectacular DDC inspired team. Last time Shinmyoumaru led them to victory and away from the cup with the debut title. >/marisa/
A whole team dedicated to Gensokyo's favourite ordinary magician, -ze. Like their namesake, a chaotic and entertaining team in a way only a team with 23 different Marisas could be. Last time results didn't go their way but they played some of the most entertaining divegrass of the cup against /honk/ and /sa/. Back again under new management this time and with some subtle improvements /marisa/ look to Master Spark the other 11 teams out the way on their way to the final.

A team dedicated to only one perfect and charismatic mistress. A terminally unlucky team last time who finished last place despite some close matches, they come back for another try. Hey Mister... wanna watch some divegrass?

The Subterranean Animism inspired team return for a second go at Genso Cup after last time being denied only by the slimmest of margins on goal difference. Led by Satori, she unleashes her prolific goalscoring pets on the rest of the cup (team captain Okuu pictured). Under new leadership will they improve on last time's 5th place edging out the cup on the final day or finally go the whole way and 1CC Genso Cup 2?

A popular team from other tournaments making it's debut in Genso Cup, after missing out last time due to imbalanced numbers the Scarlet Devil Mansion sends its finest and most elegant divegrass players. The team is a mix of EoSD references and references to other games the SDM gang appear in, their debut promises to be explosive with the opening fixture of the entire cup against PC-98 era /98hu/ as the Windows era tries to assert itself as the best one early on.

Last but not least, this cup will be using a format which has never been used before in a divegrass cup: Triple elimination.

The bracket (pic related) might look intimidating, but it works on a simple principle: Every team starts with 3 "lives" and loses one every time it loses a match.
Losing a life also means dropping down to the 2-Lives or 1-Life brackets and restarting the stage. Losing all of your lives means being knocked out.
Winning the match means staying on your current bracket and advancing by one stage, or sometimes even more.

All in all, we've got a total of 9 stages to go through to obtain the 1cc (this is the same as on PoFV, so we've decided to call the stages "Episodes").
The colors on the bracket also make it easier to understand where the losing team from each match will end up after dropping.

Why such a complicated format instead of, say, having three groups of four teams and then a regular knockout stage with the best eight?

Because everyone else does that and it gets boring and stale pretty fast. We wanted to do something unique that references the gameplay closely giving every team three lives and that rewards 1CC runs with an easier bracket. It's also a subtle nod to PoFV and it's 20th anniversary having the same breakdown of stages as 'episodes'.

The format will probably change again, the first cup was a single round robin with eight teams and a four team playoff for the top four, Next time we'll likely do something else. Next time maybe Swiss system or conventional format with four team groups and a knockout bracket but with a
play for score' bonus goal system that rewards meme outcomes with higher scores like for goalkeeper goals, red cards, not bombing (not using subs) or getting a huge buff like an extra higher stat player but at the cost of -1 goal for using it. A third cup might not happen until 2027 though so we'll have some time to come up with something.

The first cup happened as an 'incident' because /2hug/ became the first 2hu team in meme divegrass ever to win a major tournament in the /vg/ League, but GC2 was alongside FW releasing as a second 'incident'. So we'd keep the same format of only running them after an 'incident' or a major game release.

But they'll be something on that on Sunday during the final matchday. GC3 probably won't happen until 21 or 20.5 comes out so likely summer 2027. Something else might happen next year in the spring that isn't Genso Cup but nearly all the teams will be eligible but we'll elaborate more on and see what the feedback is like first. If that doesn't happen then we might do a smaller format GC 2.5 next summer instead of nothing.

But if it doesn't run next year we might run a small GC 2.5 in the summer.
