In Japanese culture, there is videspread belief in entities known as Hungry Ghosts. They are the souls of dead people who died experiencing great unrealized cravings. Traditionally they are depicted as quite grotesque and sad beings, having features such as necks too thin to properly swallow food, or having everything they eat turn into ashes.

The Hungry Ghosts are part of the Buddhist cosmology, and Buddhist monks and lay devouts frequently do rituals known as Hungry Ghost Feeding rituals that are intended to alleviate the suffering of the the Hungry Ghosts.

Hungry Ghosts are generally thought to be rather weak and pitiable entities, but there is some mythology to suggest they can be of quite varying power. The mythology around Hungry Ghosts bleeds into other types of ghost mythology, including the resentful onryou who could be very powerful, and ghosts that haunt people because of sexual resentments like dying a virgin or unmarried.

What if there was someone who was alive around the late Heian or early Kamakura period and was associated with the monk-poet Saigyou, who died full of unrealized cravings and resentments? Saigyou was a member of the court before becoming a monk at the age of 22, for unknown reasons. 22 would have been old enough that a guard for the retired emperor could have had an illegitimate child. Perhaps this child's life could have been spared, maybe ending outside of the court in a surrogate family. Perhaps she somehow learned of her origins. Feeling resentment over the lost life she could have had, she would have resorted to suicide, and died full of deep craving. Craving for the security and comfort she would have not known, craving for becoming a woman which she would have not experienced, anger and hate for his father, viewing the cherry tree he planted and of which whimsical tales were told in bitter light...

Perhaps she was powerful enough, resentful enough that she could not be appeased by any normal means, somehow always lurking in the fringes of Saigyou's legend, circling the question why he chose the monastic life.

Maybe after hundreds of years she could have found a means to become manifest, someone willing and capable to act as her vessel for a while, someone who could see her in the best possible light, past the ghostliness, the craving and the resentment. Someone who could tell *her* legend and ensure that Hungry Ghost feeding rituals more suited to her taste would get carried out in the future.

And yet, seeing one in best possible light is still seeing, and aspects of her true nature would start bubbling up. She would end up being depicted constantly hungry. Popular imagination would somehow be compelled to give her a fertility geist physique instead of the slim frame she was originally depicted with. Often you would find these two elements - hunger and sexualization - in the same depictions.

Every time someone draws Yuyuko eating and/or being sexy, they are commiting a kind of vulgar Hungry Ghost feeding ritual. You can make your own conclusions from here on out.

Much like the princess herself, this thread is pretty fucking dead.

Also, I've been thinking, how the hell did she become the ghost princess of the netherworld?

I remember hearing that she was made "princess" by the Yama for being forgiving and well-tempered or something like that.
I think it is implied that she killed herself with her own power, so she can't attain enlightenment, so she was stuck in the Netherworld. So I think the Yama either pitied her or wanted to give her something to do to avoid a mass extinction event, so he/she gave her what's basically a managerial job with no responsibilities, but that's just how I interpret it.

Why doesn't Yuyuko grt as much recognition than other Touhou characters? I would even say Kanako and Kaguya get more. And it is weird because she is the main villain of the second most iconic touhou game, is associated with Yukari (The sex symbol of the Touhou franchise) and has a good desing and remixable theme but I rarely see threads about her in /jp/

>I would even say Kanako and Kaguya get more
I would say that she's on par with Kanako, if no slightly more popular.
As for Kaguya, well she's associated with lunarians who get a lot of attention from zun, so that's probably the reason.
>second most iconic touhou game
That would be IN, PCB is at best 3th, and you could argue that not even that.
>is associated with Yukari (The sex symbol of the Touhou franchise) and has a good desing and remixable theme but I rarely see threads about her in /jp/
/jp/ rarely reflects the broader fanbase in general (just look at the Reimu threads).
Also I think it's her personality, because(at least in fannon) she's not that interesting of a character. And there are other characters which tick the same boxes as her anyway.

Low iq take. If you're just taking her PCB appearance sure, but every game since cements her as a cunning but playful master manipulator who just enjoys simple pleasures and fucking around with everyone around her. She's so great that her interactions with Youmu alone elevate that character from trash to comedy gold.
Easily my second favorite final boss, only beat by Eiki, easy top 5 hu.

Anonymous No.49963553 >>49963574

What is your point?
Remilia is popular because she's from EoSD.
Kaguya is popular because she's linked to lunarians who get a lot of screentime from zun.
And besides, both Remilia and Kaguya are more interesting than Yuyuko.

You asked for examples of additional games where her character was expanded upon.
I gave you examples, even if you arbitrarily decided they don't count because you don't want to count them.
You also insist that a character that consistently lands in the top 10-15 most popular characters in the largest community poll isn't popular, and your explanations for the popularity of other characters boil down to simplistic reasonings such as "she's popular because she's from popular game" (as if PCB isn't a very well regarded game), a reasoning which also completely deflects from your initial flawed premise (because Yuyuko is boring, she's unpopular).
It's obvious from this conversation that you are either a troll or genuinely an idiot who cannot pay enough attention to mantain a consistent argument, either option means any further discussion is going to be fruitless.

>I gave you examples, even if you arbitrarily decided they don't count because you don't want to count them.
I didn't say that they don't count, I did say that I forgot about her being in TD, and I also said that I don't play non-mainline games(i.e fighting games) therefore I can't know whether or not she's a character there.
>simplistic reasonings such as "she's popular because she's from popular game" (
that was not the point I was making. EoSD is special as all of the characters from that game are popular, case-in-point koakuma and daiyousei, while they can't be called super popular characters, the fact that nameless mid-bosses are popular to any extent should show you that is the case. And just look at flan for fuck sake, she is a uninteresting character who still manages to be insanely popular.

Between your insistence that Yuyuko and Flan are shitty characters (completely off cuff) and that Remilia and Kaguya are only well liked because of circumstance, I'm starting to wonder if there's actually a Touhou character you so like.

Yuyuko is not a shitty character, I never claimed that to be the case.
Flan is unironically one of the most overrated Touhou characters.
>Remilia and Kaguya are only well liked because of circumstance
I'm not saying that's the case at all, the simple reality is that a character who is a part of a popular work, will become popular. Simply compare EoSD to any PC98 game, you don't see PC98 characters in fanworks because the games themselves aren't that popular.
I'm not saying that they are bad characters, quite the opposite actually.

Nah, she's still got her trademark sass in later games too. I'd argue her only weak appearance is PCB since ZUN seemingly hadn't fully conceptualized her character yet. We see a bit of Yuyuko (and Youmu's) later characterization in the endings but the actual pre-boss dialogue is a bit dry.
