Finished Bengarachou. Excellent read, Mareni did a great job of drawing me in with the nostalgic atmosphere. The game is about the MC returning to a hidden town he occasionally visited in his childhood and searching for 珍奇物品 vaguely described in his missing uncle's notes, finding out about their supernatural properties and completing his own notes about them. Each chapter from 2-5 (there's 7 and a short interlude) focus on one of the four heroines and one 珍奇物品. It's sort of like a ladder structure with the way you're getting to know and fuck each heroine in their own chapters, but they also all have their own endings that you select near the end. The structure means there's pretty minimal interaction between the girls which isn't a huge deal but I think it would've been nice to have a bit more of that. I found the searches for the objects very enjoyable to read, the blend between reality and supernatural was done well and kept me excited about what would be next while keeping me guessing about the secrets of some characters and the town itself. Shirako's chapter was my favourite with the town's state of being stuck in the past challenged by the winds of change and modernization. Both Shirako and Tomohisa's views come from their 懐古趣味, and that is what Bengarachou explores as a theme.

The last chapter is pretty much the same thing no matter which girl you pick. You get their second h-scene, a mostly identical sequence of scenes except for some minor changes to account for the girl, the same plot reveal scenes and finally the heroine's own ending. Tooko is very clearly the main girl and has a fitting ending to the chapter and the game as a whole to match. Shirako also has an interesting ending herself (it feels like it's a bad end even, but can you really call it one when both Shirako and Tomohisa are happy with their decision?), and while Emilia and Matsumi both have much more standard endings, they contrast well with the decisions Tomohisa makes in the former two and still relate to the central theme in their own ways. They're all very short but that was fine to me.

Minor complaint, Tomohisa's uncle is very much involved in the plot and we get some revelations about him at the very end, but for someone playing a big role behind the scenes it feels like we didn't learn enough about him and his past and his relation to Tooko. That's a separate story to tell I guess, but I wish we had a bit more related to him. Also having male characters being unvoiced is sad but it seems to be standard for railsoft games. It's less of a big deal in Bengarachou since there aren't many here though.

I picked it up because Jackson supposedly wrote it, but boy you could not tell, it was pretty much the same writing as all other Minatosoft games. The common route itself was excellent, the standard minatosoft comedy routines with a large cast of fun characters and a few bits of action here and there, but the two routes feel woefully underdeveloped and really rushed. There's also a 'harem' route that is really just two 30 minute routes for two side heroines stacked back to back before ending. It feels like a game where something went wrong during development and they ran out of time and had to put out what they had. H-scenes occur at random and are basically nonsensically (MC will have sex with a random side girl and then it'll go right back to the route and everyone will pretend it never happened), they introduce drama and then resolve it soon after, almost the entire cast vanishes once the common route is over, MC has a training arc to learn a super special super move in the common route and then uses it maybe once again in the entire VN when the common route is over, it's kind of a mess. The girls are very cute and there's good stuff in there but it feels really rushed. Reminds me a lot of Yuzuriha or Gikei. Read it if you want a minatosoft game where every female character is an older woman who wants to rape the shota MC, I guess. This post was very critical but I liked it, I just feel like it didn't live up to its own potential and it's probably the worst minatosoft game I've ever played (except for Kurogane, but I only read like an hour of that before I gave up, the live2d was just too bad, I couldn't hack it)

I thought the surreal, supernatural vibe was definitely on point, but I honestly didn't like any of the heroines that much. Maybe the art style just isn't for me. I think it doesn't look that flattering on the girls, but it works for everything else in the game so maybe the overall aesthetic tone is more important than having cute girls. Did you read any other railsoft to compare it to?

Sometimes the nuance between the Japanese word and the English equivalent is different enough that I prefer to just slam in the 言葉 with no condom.
For example, the difference between 背徳感 and "guilty pleasure" is pretty substantial. I think of guilty pleasure as "Yeah, the Minions movies are dumb, but I just like them!" and 背徳感 as "Agh, I really need to stop letting my son give me blowjobs, but every time he calls me 'papa' I explode into his marumaru-schooler throat!"

If a story focuses heavily on a certain motif, concept, theme, or whatever, it's easier to just type in Japanese because you've already spent a bunch of hours constantly reading that word. I haven't read that VN but judging from anon's review, they probably said 珍奇物品 a gazillion times in the text. Finished my reread of Silverio Vendetta, what an amazing ending.
That said, I still have one question left that doesn't let me sleep. Who is Vendetta? We know Planetes are former dead humans and they are no longer their exact original selves, but Vendetta is an anomaly for obvious reasons (or simply said incest rape). So, the question is how much of nee-chan is in Vendetta? Could she be said to be the perfect "reincarnation" unlike others? I've been going back and forth about this and just can't reach a single satisfactory conclusion.

If you're trying to translate out of passion and love for the VN, I hope this hasn't been too discouraging. Fan translating is a pretty thankless and depressing task, but it can be a great learning experience.

So there's part of me that's worried that I have become out of touch and stagnant in time. And over time it's become so exaggerated that they have no capability to comprehend what even my job is because they just don't want to engage with anything after that period. I'm behaving. A lot of the VNs I'm interested in aren't translated and that's actually really frustrating because I can't talk about them. There is a translation in the works for Tokimeki 2 currently so at least that one will change at some point. That first one is ass though. The only reason they translated the SNES version was because it would be less effort. It's also not the most accurate or effective at conveying the language in English either.

It's flashed it's weapons here and there but it's mostly just been pretty fun sol stuff. I imagine its a result of some constraints but when people said that it was like a wikipedia, I didn't actually expect it to disconnect me from the context of the scene, remove the BGM, and robotically explain entities like the WHO in dead silence. Different authors favor different words and spellings, so if your goal is vocabulary the best thing you can do is read lots of different authors.
Mixing genres will also help expose you to new words. Read a little fantasy, a little sci-fi, a western, etc.

There's no silver bullet for vocabulary though. You just read and read and read.

I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I am enjoying Black Sheep Town...I'll be honest and say I've never been a fan of Setoguchi as much as others because everything i've played by him has a tendency to be really preachy and heavy-handed which always leaves me with a weird feeling about his games. Setoguchi I feel has a certain idealism that if you as a reader don't completely buy into his games kinda fall flat. But BST feels a bit different because while characters have their own philosophies on life, the game feels balanced since it doesn't feel like there's a moral "point" to be made in comparison to say Musicus. It's all right. I didn't find all of the comedy funny. The world feels alive, with lots of characters who have their own lives going on that you catch glimpses of every now and then. It nails the atmosphere of 00s Shibuya nightlife.
I feel like the writer got lazy after the common route, though. I'm not really impressed with how it's all wrapped up in the true end.
