Correction: People here did play vidja together once upon a time, but since that isn't hololive or idol related it was deemed out of line by the jannies as they continue their campaign to make as many altchans as possible seem that much better.
>Also maybe shouldn't have bullied ayapervert out.

What do 400 year old little girls have to do with Freemasonry? The high school thing is a mix of target audience for such media being highschoolers and the fact that highschool tends to be kind of peak of individual expression in Japan for most. Occult symbolism is tricky because it can be something or the equivalent of 16 yo metal kids scrawling pentagrams. Of course they carry an energy signature, but not all people understand what they are really about or for. I'm gonna need a bit more than that to convince me that ZUN is a freemason.
>>49800606 #
Gensokyo is a spirit world that is a manifestation what would in Western terms be called Neptunian and Venusian energies. Of course me and lesbians are going to fall in love with and goon silly style to something like that. Gensokyo's nature is beatifully reflected in it being a doujin franchise, it's an imaginative, beautiful work of art (full of women) that is also "dissolved", open, free for all to use within the limits of certain terms.

It's the Neptunian half of it which is of great interest. I mean, Venusian things are very nice and pleasant, but Neptunian energies are extremely powerful. They can be delusional, narcotic and dissolving, but these energies are like a cosmic ocean that saturates all of reality. It's no coincidence that Tibetan Buddhists have an "oceanic lama" as their leader, despite being a landlocked country. It's no wonder some call certain types of mystical experiences "oceanic states". It's not wonder the classic metaphor is "the schizophrenic drowns in the waters where the mystic swims".

And if you can swim without sinking, it's profoundly purifying and healing. It's in an ocean where Izanami conducted the first misogi after becoming perturbed by the death of Izanagi. The fact that this gave birth to the ocean kami tells us it was not an ocean of water. It's the holotrophic reality which Kasulis' wrote about, where a single thing reflects the whole, like a fractal unfolding. Returning to that cosmic ocean purifies and heals, restores us back to wholeness and leads us back home. It's this reason why so many feel nostalgic and homesick for Gensokyo even if they come from a non-Japanese culture.

These energies might even be the latent consciousness of the universe itself. It might be Kobo Daishi Kukai's sixth element, mind, which pervades all of reality. In the Dainichi Nyorai Sutra, it's said that the every metaphorical pore of Dainichi Nyorai, the consciouss universe, is "full of countless oceans". And just as the individuated mind can manifest basicaly anything in it's immaterial aspects, so can the cosmic mind too.

Gensokyo most likely exists only in wholly immaterial sense, but it is real. It's just something far wider, stranger and weirder than most can even imagine. There are times and places where you can better interface with it, but if your heart screams loud enough for it, it will hear you and find you. What happens from there on out is entirely up to you. Some become completely raptured by it's Venusian beaty, some become moved to become musicians and artists, and some can see and feel that there is more to it than just beauty and escapism.

This sort of cum vampire thinking (maybe the whole "gapped" and eaten by youkai thing) is just a manifestation of anxiety over misaligned sexual energies. Every straight man lusts after women and simultaneously fears losing their indepence to their bewitchery, fears losing control of themselves and their libido. I can't say the fear is entirely unjustified, but living like that will twist and warp you and make you unable to interface with certain energies and facets of reality. There are higher and lower, healthier and sicker forms of love and lust. Energies can be purified and transmuted.

There is a reason why (You)r dick responds so strongly to modern day equivalents of nymphs and muses and dakinis and apsaras and goddesses. Explore that reason to it's very root without fear or anxiety.

Apparently Asama Yuiman is based on the legend of Koga Saburo, which is one of the given identities of the Suwa kami. In lore, she is apparently described as an old friend of Kanako-sama. The Suwa kami can have three (FOUR if you count Sanae) manifestations in Touhou. Three!

The 2nd half makes perfect sense even from the premise, it's obvious that whatever appeared in Gensokyo was something incredibly powerful. Considering that the Lunarians are basicaly the amatsukami, it would make sense that the antagonists would either be them or be connected to them. Moon connection was already hinted at in the demo.

I had a hunch the pyramid might have been based on Minakamiyama, which has folklore about it actually being a pyramid, weird UFO reports, claimed connection to Imperial creation myths and most importantly is in Nagano. I was wrong about it, but was expecting Lunarian connection on that "UFO" angle - something likely related to Nue and the mechanics perhaps being a nod to UFO, the Touhou game. But ZUN went elsewhere, and apparently this was foreshadowed all the way back in Runagate where Mokou says it's Iwanagahime who makes the Youkai Mountain smoke.

But yes, in a way "Lunarians contacted him during development", considering he flat out said that "characters decide when they want to appear".

I have been reading Bernard Faure's Gods of Medieval Japan series. I recommend it, but it's not easy text. Reading 50 pages of it feels like reading 200 pages at times, it's so dense. The network of deities he describes is dizzying, confusing, entangling. I won't longpost about it yet, because honestly, I don't get it either yet.

However, I found something in the book two that made me suspect there's been a goddess hiding in plain sight all along in Touhou. The deity in question is Benzaiten, operating behind the appearance of Tsukumo Benben.

Let's start with the following: Benzaiten is a goddess associated with many things, namely "things that flow". These things include music, and Benzaiten is frequently depicted as playing the biwa instrument. One of her alternative names is Benten. The biwa and Benten being very close to Benben are the first evidence.

However, there is something deeper to be found in Benben's spellcards. One of the cards is called Hoichi the Earless, a tale about a blind biwa player who recites the Heike Monogatari. In Hearn's rendition of the story, there is bit of context loss. Rather than the titular Hoichi being some unique individual, he is a representative of a class of blind musician who were called the biwa hoshi. Not only did they regard Benzaiten as their matron deity, they were specalist in reciting the Heike Monogatari specificaly. This text is not only a historical tale, but also showers praise on Benzaiten. Another of her spellcard's is called Sound of Jetavana's Bell, a reference to a Buddhist story found within the Heike Monogatari.

So Benben has a really dense web of references to Benzaiten or things very strongly historicaly associated with her. Perhaps Benben is a manifestation of her, or perhaps a manifestation of some lower deity associated with Benzaiten.

I'm sure others have made these connections before, but I was a bit dense about this. It's no wonder she mogs her sister. A humble koto tsukumogami, as lovely as an instrument it is, can hardly compete with something so closely associated with a goddess...

Well, I think it establishes how "magical" parts of Japan were all the way up to early 1960s. This stuff barely started fading out before the Occult Boom of the 1980s started reversing the trend to some extent. It's easy to imagine ZUN growing in world where his grandparents or even parents knew village oracles or saw exorcisms and the like.

Beyond that, there's a ton of small stuff. A notable one which I think I already posted was just exactly what "reimu" means. Touhou Wiki has it as "Divine Dream", which is true, but basicaly it's a type of dream where a kami appears to the dreamer. People took these extremely seriously. If the kami asked something of the person, like them to undertake a pilgrimage, and they didn't comply, they would get sick or start growing neurotic and only answering the call would resolve it.

Other little bits I remember:
- The Okina noh mask is a kind of generic stand-in for ancestral kami, noh itself is likely a survival of some old form of shamanism.
- People believed there were kind of hells or heavens or other realms in some mountain valleys. Recall how Gensokyo is depicted as being a mountain valley.
- A halo or wreath of flames was common element in not only Buddhist wrathful deities but of gongen, which were considered these "provisional" manifestations of enlightened beings. ZUN's habit of depicting various deity type characters with fiery auras might come from this.
-Yama and Jizo Bosatsu were sometimes considered two faces of one and same entity. Eiki was a Jizo statue before getting "promoted" to Judge of Paradise.
- Being able to talk to animals was considered a sign of quality mountain ascetic. This explains Kasen's slightly random feeling animal friendship thing.
- Japan has of course a tradition of people traveling to spirit realms, but for some reason the direction of travel seemed to be mostly into hellish or netherworldish realms and not the heavens. Just like in Touhou, haha.
- Kuda gitsune were a regional speciality and Nagano where ZUN is from is one of these areas. People were up to the 1960s reporting literally seeing kitsune spirits, some areas had families that were shunned because they were considered kitsune sorcerors.
- Author met a mountain ascetic woman who had unusually Tengu-like characteristics including eyes that glinted.

There's probably even more but I don't remember all the details anymore. Other people might pay more attention to entirely different things than me.

The thing about reimu, the kami-dreams, was what left maybe the strongest impression on me. While I was in Japan, I started having constant dreams of being in shrines. These dreams had characteristics that were exactly like common elements in the kami-dreams reported in the books. For example, it mentions that the kami in dreams speak with low, loud and pretty terrifying voice, and snakes and dragons are common manifestations.

I had a dream where Shizuoka Sengen had a secret side shrine that could be accessed from the pilgrimage road if you took a right turn after a certain shop. In the shrine, a small creature that was something between a snake and a dragon floated there, circling in the air. It spoke to me with a voice that was thundering and enormously loud and deep for a creature of such small size, declaring "we have always been here in various forms" in my native language. I jolted awake from that, but the kami was considerate enough to do this around the time it was time for me to wake up anyway. I had this dream the night after visiting the Shizuoka Sengen shrine. I had felt something at the shrine, something I had more vaguely felt in other shrines I had visited up to that point, but it was much stronger and more discrete there.

I would very much like to double down on my recommendation of The Catalpa Bow. It's excelent stuff and puts a lot of context into many aspects of Japanese culture and mythology.

Some stuff off the top of my head:
- Ascetic practices and cold exposure repeatedly play a big role in Japanese shamanic practices. Training for itako, blind seer women, included up to 33 333 buckets of cold water poured on them over the course of their training.
- A kind of cultivation or activation of "inner fire" seems to be a prerequisitive for shamanic success, and the fasting and cold exposure seem to be a way to force this out. Some aspects of this veer close to Indian ideas about kundalini.
- Some Buddhist temples were built in places that were thought to be or at least represent locations in afterlife, and many have a bridge over an artificial dry riverbed. That's the children's hell also featured in Wily Beast.
- Many people ending in shamanic roles had a history of sickness and neurosis that became resolved once they went through some kind of initiation.
- People took their reimu (dreams featuring deities) extremely seriously, and people who didn't heed the call became ill or started to go insane. Following the call resolved these issues. Some of the descriptions of the dreams are uncannily close to some of my own, including the type of voice the deities speak with and how they choose to appear.
- Some kind of wreath or halo of flames is not only associated with the luminous kings of Buddhism, but also with gongen, these manifestations of enlightened beings appearing as local, often very wrathful beings. Recall the fire surrounding a lot of later depictions of kami in Touhou.
- Tengu were at times seen as enemies of not only Buddhism, but also protective deities, because often the protective deities manifested as snakes. Birds and snakes were seen as kind of enemies. Maybe the Moriya-Tengu feud has a deeper mythopoetic meaning to it.
- Tenguphiles rejoice: some of the boys they would abduct and drive insane would return with shamanic gifts.
- The author met a mountain ascetic woman who had tengu-like traits, a "birdlike" face, glinting eyes and ability to move very fast in difficult terrain. Very odd anecdote, the only of it's kind so far in an otherwise very academic text.

Snakes and dragons are extremely common elements in many mythologies. Their roles tend to be very diverse though. I've been still reading The Catalpa Bow, and even in that book, even in the context of shamanic practices of a single culture, snakes keep cropping up. Sometimes in very positive light - they are associated with fertility, act as spirit guides and protect. But there is also a more troublesome side to them too, even wrathful. They are associated with things that snakes aren't really associated with in real life, such as fire. The author herself notes that some elements surrounding these fiery snakes veers close to Indian ideas about kundalini. Perhaps fragments of it got transmitted to Japan via Buddhist influence, perhaps it's convergence.

I think there is 100% more to it. I think the way they shed their skin and are "reborn" is a big part of it, but there is something beyond it. It's something extremely primordial, likely pre-human.

Rainbows are fascinating because they reveal something that is normally hidden, the spectrum of colors hiding inside undivided sunlight. There's a lot of stuff in certain forms of Buddhism about rainbow lights and rainbow bodies and how inside everything that seems substantial is just this rainbow hued light. It's strangely modern - everything really is energy at different frequences, and visible light is just a vsible manifestation of this.

When it comes to native Japanese myths, I believe the Floating Bridge of Heavens that the heavenly kami is often thought to be a rainbow. I believe the gods of Norse mythology also used a kind of rainbow bridge too?

But anon, that is very easy to interpret in the broad strokes. Fellowship leading to a divine act of creation, manifestation of the Will of Heaven. This is a doujin franchise. It's a perfectly fine and understandable result.

Looking at the changing lines at my commentary & translation of I Ching, the following arises.

Hex 13, Line 2.
The fellowship is one clan.
Endeavor for corrective measures before proceeding.

This can be taken to mean that the fellowship is too insular, elitistic or dogmatic to it's own detriment and needs to shed some of that. Other kind of "corrective measures" are also perhaps possible, I don't know Chinese to make a judgement here.

Hex 1, Line 2.
A dragon seen in the field.
Favorable to meet the eminent one.

This is a line implying that what has been hidden is now becoming more visible, and furthermore this hidden thing is very powerful. The "eminent one" as metaphor is a bit vague to me, perhaps to begin with. I think it stands for all kinds of powerful, beneficial, transcendental figures, and also the best possible manifestation of yourself.

Taken together, once the fandom takes "corrective measures" they will become able to perceive something that is very powerful, hidden and beneficial. This will lead to a fully realization of the divine act of creation. The power and importance of hexagram number 1 cannot be understated, it's of life-altering, almost cosmic importance in I Ching.

That's of course if you want to give value to a single I Ching reading. It does make perfect sense.

As for hex 13, there are several people whose bells are rung when they see that one. Fascinating reading for sure.

Okay.
>ZUN is a Freemason
Nothing points towards this. Absolutely nothing.
>The SDM are Luciferians
Considering what is presented plus the fact that Patchouli has a demonic servant, maybe there is something to it. The Yukari Evening Star thing buries a much more interesting thing within it. Yukari is a Venusian entity, in particular of the Evening Star phase. Her "hibernations" are the Morning Star phase. There are some mythological parallels with her and Xiwang Mu, a Chinese goddess who is a very ambiguous character, a deity of "life and death", patron of magic and said to be the creator of I Ching. Xiwang Mu is associated with the color purple, planet Venus, has a magical land of her with some her servants like foxes, cats and ravens being very much in line what Yukari has. Furthermore, Xiwang Mu was a demon that ascended to godhood. Yukari is a youkai with godlike powers, and it's at least heavily implied that Maribel Hearn turned somehow into Yukari. From Japanese perspective, China is to the West, so Yukari's hybrid Western-Chinese appearance (with her tabard on) is a kind of visual pun.
>The Lunar Capital is real
Yeah there is a ton of lore about a hidden alien or ancient human civilization lurking on the dark side of the Moon. There's also the Transient Lunar Phenomena, abnormal optic phenomena observed on the Moon. Some of them might be things like electrostatic or gas discharges, but some are substantially harder to explain. The Apollo Mission astronauts allegedly ran into unknown objects shadowing them, and there's later footage of Moon showing unknown objects there. Some of these objects would be of colossal size.

idk looking at the kanji in HRtP is a bit weird, but I'm not well versed in moonrunes
The torii seems to be 有 and a flame symbol, but I'm not sure...
And speaking of kanji, I'm not sure about the ofuda. Instead of the usual 大入 it has a 霊 kanji and the second might be 無, 用 or something but I can just guess with the 8x7 pixels kanji.
Still some interesting info in that pic, guess Kikuri "could" be the Hakurei god despite being in hell since a part of a kami can be enshrined in an uncountable amount of places while the body is in another. Kikuri might not even be there and the mirror just shows her, despite being there... Her being inside(?) a mirror makes me think that ZUN might have been thinking of Amaterasu.
The Yomi hell thing.... Well ZUN makes them both fit since it was the underworld until the Ministry showed up and made(or tried I guess) to make Buddhist hells in the underworld. Wonder if by human belief or not but feels like the sort of thing that ZUN wouldn't answer.
(dam missed that post somehow)

Non-picrel stuff:
>The power of human belief is a big deal in modern Western magical practice. I'm not sure if SMT explores these themes or not,
That idea has grown popular recently I guess, not sure how old that idea is. I know only SMT kinda, and looking up SMT in the archives shows a bunch of eratoho stuff drowning other posts in it but the idea seems to be there at least in some games of the series, demons are related to data similar to the mental layer and can bend the material plane and so on iirc. I really should get into megaten at some point, but getting into new stuff is hard.

>It's not all SMT references at that point either,
I think most artist/writters will just do that, pick stuff they personally know add stuff from media they like and so on, sometimes adding religious and cultural stuff and so on... So anything could feel esoteric, I think.
megaten also a many mythological references from a lot of cultures, so you can get a decent amount of stuff by just copying them + some other stuff since nips tend to slap a bunch of religious stuff here and there as if it where nothing( or maybe they have their reasons).

I guess you have a point in that it Touhou has the "could be real" factor added and isn't completely parallel, the vagueness and magic not being a like a "game system" but with blurry lines might make it look more like some irl believes.
So I guess it's more like the Divine Comedy than like DnD.

Last night I had a weird dream that involved another esoteric /jp/ anon.

I remember being in a run-down neighborhood with tall trees and really small houses. I was visiting it with my mom. At one point we came to a small house and met an old Mexican man, who had grey or white hair tied in a pony tail and possibly short at the front, a muscular body with a large pot belly, a blue shirt, and looked European with pinkish skin. For some reason I showed him a case of pewter miniatures, maybe to sell them to him, and he picked out a dog and commented how it looked like a Xoloitzcuintli which was the breed of dog he claimed to have. In real life I have pewter miniatures but none of them are dogs. I wanted to tell the man about the god these dogs are named after, Xolotl, including my apparent experiences with him, but I worried about the presence of my mother and how she might react and thus did not get to speak much.

Later I was at a long table, really a bunch of shorter ones placed end-to-end, which had many people sitting at it discussing things, I think related to the supernatural. I met the /jp/ anon there, and they said something about experiencing supernatural things after orgasm. The presence of my mother made this a very uncomfortable subject and I wondered why they had to ask about it *now*. I thought of how to say what I wanted to say and said that it would be impossible for to experience that. (I have the very rare disorder of pleasure-dissociative ejaculation, a form of [in my case] primary anorgasmia). This unfortunately caused a reaction in my mother, and I think the dream ended soon afterward.

I know the specific /jp/ regular that appeared in my dream but given the subject I’m not sure they’d want me to say.

I’ve had some spooky experiences recently. One of them involved a strange dead opossum which I posted about in the Yukari thread: https://boards.4chan.org/jp/thread/48910358#bottom
>>49152341
>Some days ago I saw something odd in my peripheral vision: something like a black bird flying in a curved trajectory fast enough that it blurs and looks like one object. While at first I thought it was just a black bird, later I realized it kinda matches the description of Yukari’s gaps. A few days later, a nearly intact dead opossum appeared in that same yard. After waiting hours to see if if was actually dead or merely playing, I approached it and saw it was nearly intact save for a tiny wound on the head by the ear, and a small amount of blood smeared on its rump, Just afterward, a group of three deer passed by and all stopped to look at me, about 10 ken away (20 meters) watching me as I first stopped, then moved along a wall to get out from a corner to get away from them.

I also had a spooky experience last night, before I went to bed. It was about 3:00AM. I was listening to some creepypasta with one headphone in and thought I heard a woman whispering or speaking quietly in another room or outside. But no-one was there. I could not tell what she was saying. Writing this down makes me wonder if perhaps that female voice might’ve been Yukari due to the possible gap sighting maybe a week or two earlier. I also realize that some people will read this and say I have schizophrenia (they almost never mention other psychotic disorders, a great deal of their ‘concern’ is just stigmatization). In that case, I would be wise to learn the rights of psychiatric patients due to the numerous cases of abuse there have been and to continue my private study of gutter fighting, for schizophrenics are at an increased risk of violence from both hospital staff and ordinary people.

Reimu leaned against the wooden veranda, broom in hand, pretending to sweep while her eyes lingered on the courtyard.

There, under the old tree, sat Marisa and Meira. Marisa’s laughter rang bright, her hand brushing too casually against Meira’s arm as she leaned in to tell some ridiculous story. Meira, usually so stoic, smiled softly—smiled—at her, and their shoulders touched as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Reimu felt a warmth rise in her chest. She didn’t interrupt; she didn’t tease. She simply watched, savoring the way Marisa’s grin softened when Meira looked at her, and how Meira’s sharp edges seemed to melt in Marisa’s company.

It wasn’t her story to join. But seeing them together like this, happy and close, filled Reimu with a quiet contentment she rarely allowed herself. The shrine no longer felt empty.

For once, she thought, just watching was more than enough.

>not only fantasy more or less based on Japanese folklore, but continuation of actual mythologies and beliefs
There's been others who have picked up on this element in Touhou that makes it a kind of continuation or update of Japanese mythology and beliefs:
https://gnosisonic.wordpress.com/2012/02/01/japans-new-mythology/
Kind of remarkable that people have been picking up on this aspect for as long as this.
>doing some "speculative" Christian theology complete with appearance of Jesus
I'm currently reading The Essence of Shinto, and IIRC it was originaly published in 2000 in Japanese. The writer is a Shinto priest outside of Shinto orthodoxy, and he admonishes the establishment for "lacking faith". While he does not say that kami die without human faith, he implies they do abandon the world and need to be called out again. Not sure what kind of an impression it made to the zeitgeist, but it's not impossible this book or some kind of general debate around the themes influenced ZUN and his ideas about "faith".

The power of human belief is a big deal in modern Western magical practice. I'm not sure if SMT explores these themes or not, but they are another possible route of influence.
>Latter being probably more important in regards to esoteric.
There's a number of references that are in relation to real life initiatory spiritual traditions in Japan. These go back to the pc98 era. Some people have done really interesting info archeology with this stuff.

It's not all SMT references at that point either, a lot of it comes from his childhood surroundings, and there's some instances where the SMT references and ZUN's surroundings kind of merge. Pic attached is a good example - Kikurihime was not only apparently in the OG SMT, but also in a shrine in ZUN's childhood town of Hakuba. She's mainly worshipped at Mt. Haku, which while not in the neighbourhood, is relatively close. It's a shugendo holy site, and Kikurihime is worshipped as a dragon goddess there.

大入 stands for 大入り big attendance, as in the shrine having a lot of attendance, good for prosperity and such.
It's probably a kikaikai ref since there ofuda also have those kanji. I mean there seem to be charms with those kanji for prosperity and all that but using it for a weaponized ofuda to fight youkai and such is odd.
> Amaterasu and Kikurihime and they palette swaps of each
i don't know much about mythology but I thought of Amaterasu reflected in the mirror when seeing her, but who knows. It would be at least fitting for the Hakurei god to be a god who's words/purpose got errased, very fitting... Would make Rinnosuke and absolute geezer if he knows about her, if he got the information about the god firsthand.
>Depends on what kind of time perspective you want to take, but not so old.
Yeah, old stuff if anything have gods a bit in need for offerings if anything from but in myth it seems more like you are simply gaining their favor so they listen to your prayers.
But I guess modern interpretations like to make gods one with the religion or similar to a society only held together by their followers and such.

Ah yeah that makes sense.
>using it for a weaponized ofuda to fight youkai and such is odd
Yeah it is a bit strange, but maybe the prosperity of a shrine gives them more impact? But for that to work, Hakurei shrine would have to be a prosperous shrine...
>I thought of Amaterasu reflected in the mirror when seeing her
The myth of her coming out of the cave features a mirror, yeah, basicaly it was used to distract/captivate her long enough for the cave to be sealed again. Mirrors in general are thought to be kind of kami-attracting objects in Shinto.
>It would be at least fitting for the Hakurei god to be a god who's words/purpose got errased, very fitting...
The fact that Kikurihime got conflated with the dragon goddess of Mt. Hakusan is also interesting when you consider the greatest deity of Gensokyo is the Dragon God.
>it seems more like you are simply gaining their favor so they listen to your prayers
Yeah, in Essence of Shinto, the author who was a high priest writes that "the power of divine light increases by receiving human reverence" and that if the kami do not receive genuine faith they will retract from this world, but they don't die. So there's a native Japanese view on the matter.

I haven’t been keeping track but it seems like it’s been a long time since we’ve heard from that French anon who said he was meeting Yukari in his dreams, and I think even catching the occasional glimpse of her IRL. Could he really have been spirited away? Does that mean one of us could be next? I did have a dream this January about departing on a ship called “The Black Moon”, which is also the name of an astronomical event which will happen in August this year. If he did get spirited away, is he to live a new, better life in Gensokyo or is he going to be eaten by a youkai? It seems at least stereotypical 4chan users are more likely to be youkai’s favorite food:
>Depressed people, spiteful people bearing grudges, criminals and the like are the favorite food of youkai.
Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, section on the Road of Reconsideration https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Perfect_Memento_in_Strict_Sense/Road_of_Reconsideration
But if this were the case it would seem strange to me that Yukari would spend so much time building a relationship with him just to kill him at the end. It’d only make sense if she had some restriction on her ability to take other people, like she can only take willing participants, or if she can only take people in certain locations and has to lure them there.

On the topic of computers and occultism, one could interpret the Aztec god Xolotl as the god of computers. He’s the god of twins, though Ometecuhtli/Omecihuatl is the actual god of duality itself, and Xolotl is a god of “heavenly fire” which primary includes electricity in the form of lightning.

Also, this reminded me how a while back I was reading an online Nahautl dictionary and found a reference to sorcerers having a special language. I wondered if you might able to speak it by speaking Classical Nahuatl backwards, because one of the greatest gods of magic is Tezcatlipoca, the Smoking Mirror and mirrors display text backwards, and another god of sorcery Xolotl is sometimes depicted with backwards hands and feet. There’s also the general idea in our culture of stuff said or played backwards being spooky, but I have no idea of its actual credibility.

As I was writing this I tried whispering the word for fire, Xiuh (pronounced Shee-oo-w) backwards so that it became Huix (Woo-eesh) and for a second thought I smelled smoke, but that easily could have been nothing but imagination. I also remembered how maybe a couple weeks ago I had a dream I forgot to write down where either I was magically learning or someone was telling me that all the “pre-contact” codices were fake.

Looking at that post I wouldn’t think it to be him. But on a anonymous site it’s impossible to know for certain. The discussion about this made me think of a funny possibility: What if I’m genuinely experiencing the supernatural but I’m the only honest poster and everyone else thinks it’s an elaborate joke? And eventually I mysteriously disappear and everyone thinks it’s just part of the game?

Also, thinking of the possibility that /out/ French anon genuinely disappeared, made me realize that I’d be like living through a crappy videogame creepypasta but real. The point of a lot of stuff like sonic.exe is how they play with the boundary of fiction and reality. You think you’re just playing a hacked Sonic game, but then he comes out of the screen and gets you. You think you’re just playing a doujin bullet hell game, but then she comes out of the screen and gets you. Am I going to find a haunted copy of Perfect Cherry Blossom in the mail?

It's not, and considering the "moonies" are Shinto kami, I doubt anyone here or out there has the power to fight such beings literally. It would also be extremely unwise to fantasize about doing such if he was not being honest, as well as invoking some sort of local fae.

>I haven't read all that many doujins myself, do you have any recommendations from Hisona's works?
All of them! But in terms of relevancy to subjects at hand I would point out to following:
Idle talking Idols ( 形代閑話) is a straightforward example of Hisona delving more into folklore and religious background of Touhou. It's almost a lecture, which considering the plot isn't that surprising.
Drown in Nostalgia (ノスタルジアの埋没) is another example of taking from actual mythology and historical events to create a basis for the plot, but this time it is more eventful. It deals with Kutaka and her longing after Outside World worshipers. Funnily, this one was posted and translated on danbooru alongside >>46801995, I remember reading both at the time.
Probably the most interesting one would be however Let Dreaming Dogs Lie (ゆめゆめ夢見ることなかれ). It is similar to Drown in Nostalgia in both borrowing and having a plot around things borrowed, this time dealing with Seija and her having internal identity crisis thanks to amanojaku being tied and muddled with many different beings in folklore. Notably, Ame-no-Sagume connection is also mentioned, with doujin being from May of 2014 (full version of LoLK is from August 2015). This alone shows some knowledge about subject from Hisona, but it gets somewhat chilly near the end, when Satori, who was asked to help Seija, mentions that they (2hus, within narration) may end up calling down Ame-no-Sagume by accident if the situation with Seija won't be properly resolved. This doujin has a sequel too, Enchant the Left (左を魅よ), which is a nice example of trying to tie together Touhou and various myths into single, coherent narration, quite succeeding in my opinion.

>it's more like the Divine Comedy
Yes, that's a good comparison. But it immediately makes think about Tractatus de Purgatorio Sancti Patricii from later part of 12th century. A story about Irish knight traveling through purgatory, it is said to influence Dante and Divine Comedy, but it also impacted the discourse around concept of purgatory in Catholic Church, as it was around that time when theological debate was fleshing out and solidifying the concept (Orthodox Church and most Protestant denomination reject the idea of purgatory).
I mention this mostly because there is a back-and-forth between art and religious beliefs throughout the ages, oldest that I remember being Hesiod and Homer impacting Greek beliefs in Hellenistic period. As the doctrine of particular religion becomes more and more intricate, it becomes less likely to be influenced by popular art-pieces. However, with how light-weight is Shinto in this regard, I wouldn't be surprised if an actual change in beliefs caused by Touhou happens one day. But at the same time, as >>49191234 pointed out, ZUN in turn might have been influenced by religious debate at that time too.

Yes, but to get to 128 he had to include Keine's 2nd form as a separate entry. You could also argue he could have dropped some, included some more, or wound up at any other number than 128 via other means.

The framing of the book could have been any number of different things, and he went for omikuji. I also recently learned that apparently it was ZUN himself who suggested that Reitaisai - which is also just a generic term for annual major festivals at shrines - should name itself so.

Thank you for your recommendations!
>However, with how light-weight is Shinto in this regard, I wouldn't be surprised if an actual change in beliefs caused by Touhou happens one day.
It'll be interesting to see. Shinto has perhaps a bit more theology going behind it than people give it credit for - having read materials produced by Japanese has given me more insight into this - but at the same time it feels like it has been quite porous.

I finished Essence of Shinto and the practices section feels like it was heavily influenced by Taoism, Buddhism and potentially even Western ideas. The idea of focusing on the tandien, a spot below the navel, is very much from Taoism. There's mantra-like chants. There's even this idea that you can talk to your internal kami that feels extremely in line with Western ideas about the guardian angel and daimons. It's actually kinda insane if that is just convergence. The practice section seems more like an advert for the training program they run - perhaps used to run, considering it's been 25 years since it was published - but it's really interesting and cool. There are people out there basicaly practicing a tantric form of Shinto. The guy who wrote the book had an European disciple who became a priest himself. I wonder if something remains of that lineage in the West..?

Touhou doesn't have any explicitly spiritual practices to loan out - unless you are in the Danmaku is Meditation and/or Spirits of Gensokyo are Real camps - so it would be something else it would have to lend out to.

What would it be? Perhaps some re-interpretation of the mythology? Not all of Shinto is so wed to the Imperial House-centric narratives. Or perhaps some way other Western ideas are meshed with Japanese ideas?

In some way, the wires may have already been crossing a bit. There was apparently an official government document where some YouTube video where Hatsune Miku visits Hakurei Shrine was used as an example of "virtual religion".

I do wonder - is there someone who has become a Shinto priest or a shrine maiden because of Touhou? There's a borderline e-celeb Shinto priest guy who became one via the influence of Higurashi. Judging by the amount of Japanese people visting real life holy sites because of Touhou, I am very sure someone has - or will - hear the call by walking this path. I'd be the guy if it was in any way even remotely realistic.

Hurting others with metaphysical, when you only perceive physical aspects at best, unable to properly asses metaphysical effects of your transgression, isn't wrong, it is foolish. You are trying to inflict wounds which grievousness you can't predict with a weapon you can't comprehend.
There is a longstanding tradition of deities, spirits and spiritually aware people causing harm as well, but the common motif for the latter is that before harming, first comes understanding and powers that are considered benevolent, as for example healing.
You don't want to start spiritual journey with hurting other people. And if you aren't starting, then what are you waiting for? Stop misusing quote function and try to do what you want to do.
Anonymous No.49914350
>>49249285
Hurting people is wrong because it cultivates you into a person who hurts people.

While you might not think this is a bad thing, or that this is "just the way things are" or even desirable, this ultimately hurts you too. Hurting other people becomes slowly a larger and larger part of how you perceive the world and social interactions. You will feel more and more the desire to hurt other people, seek opportunities to do so and feel frustrated when you cannot do it. This desire to hurt others is rooted in and fueled and shaped by aggression. While there is an almost pleasant quality to that rush of stress hormones and negative energies, it will wear you down. Your perception of the world becomes more and more negative, warped and violent. You will cut off more and more opportunities to feel connection with others for the sake of feeling more and more anger and frustration. You will sabotage opportunities to resolve conflicts in a constructive way. You will not let go off resentments or conflicts but brew and fester in them. You won't even need to die to go to hell, because you will warp this world into a hell for yourself.

The point of this all is to escape the PVP server and go into the creative mode. Every time you hurt someone, every time you cultivate the desire to hurt someone, you are one step further away from that.

I could of course appeal to basic empathy - you wouldn't want others to hurt you - the collective negative effects of hurting others and how it creates fear, resentment and the desire to hurt in others, or the fact that you might FAFO and suddenly have others desiring to hurt you.

Wishing to hurt people by supernatural means gives the FAFO an entirely new, karmic flavor and it also draws in the attention of entities who wish to cultivate these miserable qualities in people. They are untrustworthy and rejoice in your suffering and the servitude they try to coerce and trick you into. They are the type of entities who will burn down your house for insurance money when you ask them for money. Some believe they can control them, pester them into autistic deals, but they don't realize this locks them into permanent struggle and paranoia, and the negative entities win through that in the end.

Am I free of the desire to hurt others. No. I have also countless other bad characteristics and habits. But I acknowledge these as failures and something to be avoided, if not for anything else then just for my own sake.

When you get involved with the numinous, you become more of what you are. Without some serious pruning you might find yourself becoming demonic. And I think we all know what is the natural environment for such entities.

>His birth chart apparently has some stuff strongly relating to communication and spirituality, so...
It does. The measure of a nativity is fixed on a single thing: the capacity for spirituality. So the first thing to look at in a natal chart is the 9th house, which rules spirituality. ZUN has Mercury and the Sun in the 9th house. Mercury rules communication, intellect and magic. Lily also states that the Sun rejoices in the 9th house, so this is a very auspicious placement for Spirituality. Jupiter also rules the 9th in his chart, so it's the planet of Spirituality ruling the house of Spirituality and religion. Furthermore, the Sun is in Pisces, which means it is in reception to Jupiter, and Jupiter resides in the 11th. Jupiter is the great Benefic and the 11th is "blessings from above". No wonder ZUN managed to make a living despite Touhou being a one man project. Saturn is also in the 1st house near the ascendant, which causes embodiment (reflective in physical appearance). Saturn rules profound sciences and hidden things, so this embodiment of Saturn on top of his capacity for spirituality creates a real magic man.
Anonymous No.49914361
>>49258230
I also neglected to mention that both Saturn and Jupiter are amplified because Saturn has joy in the 1st and Jupiter has joy in the 11th. ZUN seems like he will have a long life as Saturn in the 1st indicates long life as well as a solid constitution. He is Saturnine in appearance, and it's funny that he offsets this by wearing floral and brightly colored clothes, as there was an astrological academy in Renaissance times where the whole building was constructed at an auspicious time in order to offset the Saturnine nature of the inhabitants. Saturn rules "magicians, demons, ghouls", and the eminent Renaissance astrologer William Lily learned astrology from a strange man called Mr. Evans, who was the most Saturnine person he ever met in his career (Lily occupied a high position in society and had many clients).

The Saturnine Mr. Evans was an alcoholic too. Yet also had the ability to summon spirits:
>was much addicted to debauchery,
>desired by the Lord Bothwell and Sir Kenelm Digby to show them a spirit. He promised so to do: the time came, and they were all in the body of the circle, when lo, upon a sudden, after some time of invocation, Evans was taken from out the room, and carried into the field near Battersea Causeway, close to the Thames.
>demons and ghouls
Indeed, it's not necessarily a negative term. Ghoul is an Arabic term for spirit and demon is a neutral term outside of the Christian context. So this would be interchangeable with yokai. Magicians after all have breached that realm so they are of the same class. Saturn also rules their opposite: those who revile demons, magicians and ghouls.

When I first played EoSD. The combative logic of Danmaku in which opponents contend against one another through aetherial abstraction made material - that the consequential swing of their -any characters- blade and its effectivity depends not on brawn or might, as you might suspect, but on character and spirit, such that in Touhou a battle of danmaku exhibits a battle distilled to its most absolute form. That, yeah, when I realized it, instantly I was made to kneel, and why not, for after all ZUN knowingly established a game system through which Schopenhauer's argument for 'will' can with all transparency be perceived.

You see, visualizing the distinction of will and of person is pretty hard, even if say you easily roll with 'the will's the lizard brain or something, and us, we're the ape brain', or 'the will is that which controls us' - it still isn't quite clear, and no hard separation for self is ever presented... The 'representation' is without justness tacked on too, in other cases, which makes me think, "that's boring."
But, if you muse about it as ZUN does, the more interesting way, then Danmaku IS 'will', a part of you yet not, while the characters, its representation.
The World as Will and Representation is,
The World as Danmaku and Touhou.
That's what makes danmaku so intoxicating and inseparable from the character originally spawning it, because we blitz past the yoke of reality and unearth that which only God can see, or at least we create a simulation to that effect. Somewhat.
Although you might get bored after a couple hundred attempts, the first time seeing interacting with any danmaku is always awesome... unfortunate that ZUN had to get married, since virginity is the suspect conduit to depict all of this proper, according to most occult knowledge. ( that's why works past TH12 feel like some sick joke )

Yes, touhou is the sequel to Schopenhauer's opus, or at any rate a great complement, but regrettably I can't with clarity write anymore a reason as to why I firmly believe this, whether because I haven't slept well in awhile, or because I'm no good at communication. Likely the latter.
So why then, I ask, do some characters not have danmaku to call their own, assuming we're to believe everyone has a will?
If Danmaku = will, everyone should have danmaku, as will exists in all, the characteristic of everything alive.... or so it should go, but ZUN again thinks otherwise. A true contrarian, to him, some people are just dolls, more or less simply inanimate entities. Cattle, if you will.
And wouldn't you know, that's what all the ordinary humans are considered in-universe too.
It's probably true for the real world also. Some people really don't seem to exhibit any desire to do anything at all beyond that which is instilled and commanded unto them; they have no will of their own seeking its representation, and are predated by those who do.
I'm the same.
Most people I know are.

Anyway, you know, come to think of it, Junko's will was free of errancy, the purest of pure, a consequence of which must've distorted, in fact corrupted, what her danmaku actually originally was. We haven't seen the real Junko. She needs to stage a come back.
Likewise for Ram and Chen.

That seems like a really coherent and trustworthy source. But yeah, "shaman as third gender" thing is probably based on real life stuff. I just remembered the Death and Resurrection Show book. I've not read it personaly but I've read a review of it which talked about this stuff. Was written in the 80s. Far ahead of any widespread discourse about this stuff.

Jung's writings about anima, animus and how there is always a kind of aspect of the other gender present in humans is related. He got his ideas largely from medieval European thought, but also from the Chinese side. In China, there's this strand of the culture which thinks that men have an external yang nature but internal yin, and women have external yin nature but internal yang. I often think about that myself, something about it feels very true.

But yeah. The old traditions had views on these things which were at times pretty nuanced and the modern discussions just feel really dumb, pointless and perhaps paradoxicaly overly sexualized.

How this is related to Touhou, I don't know, but I often think about how and why the fandom has so many guys doing crossdressing cosplay. Make what you will of that.

Most everyone I've come to know personally interested in Touhou aren't really transgender, aren't really crossdressers, aren't really this third gender you speak of, but people who like danmaku and have cleared just about every game on freem.jp... then again, they're all Japanese, Korean, Chinese and 1 Kenyan ( he calls himself Kenyan, at any rate. )
I think one of my friends, also, just likes how it exhibits a pretty fun atmosphere.
On 4chan of course, people like you and an overwhelming majority into touhou are indeed transgender. Of that there can be no doubt.

>>49271280
The stuff to do with a third gender derives from the Canaanite-Baphomet archetype and initiative in which instating a rebellious component throughout Adam's seed, of subverting natural order, is an activity pushed in dogged and obstinate pursuit, for naturally no greater blasphemy, none more insulting, can be exhibited and exhibiting than in destroying the image of God, and consolidating a manufactured consensus of its apparent lack, of it 'not being what should've been'. A way to insult, if you will. That's the earliest record: warnings against it, descriptions of Satan talking about it. Even the bible has mentions of this. Japs have something with a kabuki theatre during the edo era pertaining to cross dressing. Something that was stupid and funny enough to them that they still use it to crack jokes hundreds of years later, and for hundreds of years to come.
Also, shamans are simply human conduits for which spiritual forces can effectualize much the same way a carafe to wine, and to that end, stability is necessary. Confliction emergent from sexually parallel natures invites only a volatility too excessive, and would ultimately destroy any realization of transcendent engagement. Inarguably, the best shaman is the virgin man, pure in his chastity, a man from top to bottom, and nothing beside.
More importantly, the female element, in effect, is an element the presence of which invites only sexual and sensual energy, and all of its seemingly distinct creation separated so, are upon scrutiny, carefully connected to it. Suggestions of a fusion of that, to man, only hampers and harms, does it not?
A shaman must really in the end be a machine, for a mechanical entity is afforded the blessing of endowment with what man ultimately is evolving toward: a purely logical construct mobilizing only to satisfy non-sexual stimuli.
That's why autism's on the rise, which is magnificent. The more robotic a society, the better. As we all become essentially Chinese and Japanese in character, the world will move to a truly peaceful stage, and the abstinence of sex will be a perfectly proper norm, for hitting the end goal of evolution shall at last arrive.

Just think on it. The homo sapiens species is the male, not the combination of a male and a female. The "female" subspecies is the reproductive machine for the male genome. The evolutionary advantage of sexual reproduction's was the separation between reproduction itself and adaptability to an environment into two distinct bodies, which worked for bacteria long before it did for multicellular organisms. Whereas the male genome both adapts quicker and is selected for quicker than that of the female, that the female genome needs less variability to display the same functions within themselves and uses more calories to survive than the male meant the bodies of non sexually reproducing organisms had one half of the efficiency of those procured by genomes which accounted for sexual reproduction. The reason the female brain is literally useless for communication, mathematics and in general all the pattern recognition capabilities the male brain has when compared to the female one is because they've had no selective pressure for these traits, which explains the females who "are good at it" as the percentage of females who inherited these traits indistinctly. That the sexually reproducing species outbred and "out-adapted" other species at the unicellular level would eventually lead to it happening on multicellular level and eventually create a "perfectly" adaptable body whose only trait that generated reproductive behavior would have to be hard coded genetically since there'd be masses of highly adaptable individuals with no interest in reproduction who wouldn't have been selected for. The next step in the evolution of the homo sapiens will be a species the individual of which will be even more adaptable to the environment than the male homo sapiens whose reproduction will not have his brain have a dedicated part to going after a reproduction machine at the expense of pattern recognition. Namely artificial reproduction and the obvious obsolescence of the female subspecies.

I ask you of what 'logic' do you speak of? Do you even have an idea? There is at least continuum of first-order, meaningfully distinct logic models. There are various non-standard logics on deduction level, like intuitionistic logics or paraconsistent logics. There are classic binary logics, multiple-value logics, non-fregean logics (the latter two have an overlap, but are not one and the same, Suszko's thesis notwithstanding). And this is before we face the fact that the first cited sentence of yours in this post uses a quantifier (overwhelming majority) that needs second-order logic to be properly modeled. And second-order logics for standard semantics are either noncomplete (some universally valid sentences are unprovable), noneffective (there is no algorithm that allows for proof verification in finite time), or both.
This iceberg I mention above is much, much bigger still, but there is no point in losing characters on that. The important thing is, that there are multiple logics you can apply to a given problem and arrive at different conclusions. Furthermore, logic alone does not give a solution as to which of those logics is "correct" in relation to the actual world. You need to either ignore any correspodency between your reasonings and what is outside your mental realm (at which point communication between agents becomes seriously endangered), or if you want to choose between various logics, you need to fall back onto efficiency-based inductive or abductive reasoning, use intuition you gained or were born with, or hope for divine guidance or revelation. The first two (ignorance and non-deductive reasonings) won't ever get us to truth in a way that is confirmable by them alone, the latter two (intuition and divine intervention) are hardly domain of "robotic society". I don't see raise of autism as anything close to magnificent.
And robotic society, in which populace thinks logically, algorithm-based, even under assumption that metaphysical does not exist or is logically expressionable, is still not as cost-effective and fast as one filled with heuristic-users. Whether you want to equate heuristics with intuition or not is a matter that could be discussed, but I don't have a hard stance on this.

>meant the bodies of non sexually reproducing organisms had one half of the efficiency of those procured by genomes which accounted for sexual reproduction
There is a critical flaw in this conclusion in that it must presuppose, under your model, in which 'male' is adaptable and a place of evolutionary process, while 'female' is just a mostly static breeding machine, that male progeny would take most, if not all, genes from their father. While the process is admittedly complicated, with dominant genes, combinations and expressions all muddling the calculations way too much to propose 50-50 split even in statistical prognosis over whole population, suggesting dominance of father's genome for sons is likewise unsupported.
Why is this important? Because if male progeny doesn't take mostly from father, then any possible advantage that was acquired via evolutionary process over males is subject to be contaminated by female genome that didn't experience adaptation in your model. This includes both full-blown characteristics via singular, female genes and possible critical disruption to whole combinations of genes that were useful before, but now, lacking in some component, are making progeny unfit.
You can't even exactly mend this problem with a different genome expression based on sex. You may say that every female gene, if it was in male organism, would be fit for male as a result of evolutionary process and would work towards adaptability. Because it is in female organism, it has however expression that makes a stable reproduction unit. But under such model, you would still put a halt to evolutionary process for some genes for at least as many generations as such gene would pass across female descendants. You would have living fossils of genome lurking in some females, that was exempt from evolutionary process for such long period, that putting such genome in any male could not result in increase of fitness for such specimen apart from some miracles.
All in all, organisms that would have both their adaptability and reproduction functions in themselves (for instance some mitosis variation, letting to existence of two or more organisms with same genome, then each subjected to different circumstances to adapt to them over time) should be actually more competent, because they wouldn't risk getting a dead-weight genes via reproduction. This lends some basis for a counter-theory that seems much more sound: both female and male are homo sapiens and both contain adaptive functions and reproductive functions, allowing them mix-and-match between genomes from two organisms that proved to be viable in certain circumstances. While still far from free of mishaps and dead-ends, it gives better chances for a successful progeny.
>Even the bible has mentions of this.
>The Chinese were dead wrong about yin ABD yang, for their is only one energy, and that is the energy of man, the nature of which is far divided from internality or externality, being one and all encompassing.
If you want to use Bible, then perhaps this part should be recognisable to you:
>Et creavit Deus hominem ad imaginem suam: ad imaginem Dei creavit illum, masculum et feminam creavit eos.
Genesis 1, 27, Vulgate. Notice that there is 'hominem' used instead of 'virum'. Either God creates homo sapiens as "masculum et feminam", in which this part becomes borderline heretical:
>The homo sapiens species is the male, not the combination of a male and a female.
Or, if you prefer to discuss emanation concept, since you were talking about energies, both male and female energy emanates from the highest principle, but while they both can lead to that Principle again, it doesn't mean they can't be locally in opposition, like left and right. Therefore, Chinese may still be right in some way, differentiating between male and female, while none of them would be necessarily worse, simply different.
>Namely artificial reproduction and the obvious obsolescence of the female subspecies.
I think we are much closer to parthenogenesis. But I want to use this place for a question to you. With how critical you are of mental (and I suppose, with how you equate being shaman with logic, probably also spiritual) faculties of women, does it color your perception of female-mostly Touhou cast?

I think one of my friends, also, just likes how it exhibits a pretty fun atmosphere.
On 4chan of course, people like you and an overwhelming majority into touhou are indeed transgender. Of that there can be no doubt.
Never said transgender. I'm talking about essences ala Plato. Mercury is hermaphroditic because it is a balance of opposites and Mercury is the shaman/mage because it is the messenger from the spirit world. A hermaphrodite is a balance of masculine and feminine energy. They have one foot in the spirit world and one foot in the material world. Onmyoji literally means "Yin yang master" which is someone that has mastered duality.

I'm not quite sure how it is done, but I know that in Shinto they don't let them go to waste. Some descriptions of matsuri I've read make it seem like they make a big offering to the kami and then they share it with the participants. The common feast is kinda the offering in itself.

But for the smaller daily offerings, I don't know. Especially since they make offerings which are just stuff like raw rice and vegetables. I suppose they are gathered after a set period of time. If I'd have to wager they get cooked and eaten by shrine staff. There's such a big waste against food taboo in Japan I can't imagine them throwing things away.

Perishables outside geting eaten by animals might be intended.

>With how critical you are of mental (and I suppose, with how you equate being shaman with logic, probably also spiritual) faculties of women, does it color your perception of female-mostly Touhou cast?

There is no such thing as a female anime character, much less a female Touhou cast, or female anything in creation as familiar in the otaku sphere and even elsewhere, for unless otherwise spawned by woman, the pneumatic element of all these abstractions are fundamentally ontologically male.
2D girls operate with the psychology and mentality unique to men, and are indistinguishable from the opposite sex except by their general attraction and physiology. In all but body, they are men.
As such, my perception of the 'female' Touhou cast is divorced from my perception of females as created in the real world, and I make no conflation of either the two sharing any similarities whatsoever beyond that both are female, yet not both so in the absolute sense, and that divided space marks my comprehension of all Touhou's cast in a way no different than I do to all men in life: namely, I understand they posses the capacity for transcendence, and thus curiosity is always afforded.
My attraction to 2D is really an attraction to the character and falna of men somehow being endowed to female spirit in the bastardized crippled way it often is. This fantastical representation's always creates something beautiful.

>>49276117
The material and spiritual world are both properties the spaces of which are commanded and mastered by men, distinct only in what man in either domain is there involved and put charge of, but nevertheless vicegerency is afforded only to this sex. So, to have one foot in the material world and one foot in the spiritual, which anyway are one and the same, would be to enter spaces full of nothing but masculine energy in the end. Also, whether you try saying it isn't transgenderism or not is irrelevant, for it in effect boils down to a thing much the same.

>the pneumatic element of all these abstractions are fundamentally ontologically male
But this is presumption that that requires to assert that, in case of Touhou at least:
(1.1) ZUN doesn't have internal female energies upon which he drew during creation of Touhou AND (1.2) ZUN doesn't use any external female energies in his creative process
AND
(2.1) All of Touhou is solely ZUN's creation OR (2.2.1) any inspiration ZUN used, consciously or not, via standard or metaphysical ways, was solely some another male's creation AND (2.2.2) for each of such males that inspired ZUN an analogous proposition holds true as well.
At least some posters in this reply chain disagree with (1.1) or (1.2), maybe both. I don't think (2.1) is anywhere defensible, when ZUN straight up ripped some things from others at the beginning of his doujin carrier and still was inspired over the years by various authors. And as for (2.2.1) I know that at least some regulars in those threads would disagree with, while (2.2.2) is very hard verify, considering that even purely literary sources that could have inspired ZUN stretch over such a long period of time.
I can't say that you are wrong for sure purely by the above, but I hope that you can see how simple is to disagree with your assertion even with rather crude logic, without falling into any paradoxes. So I ask you how did you come to be so sure of your belief, because I doubt it was purely by logic you were putting on pedestal.
>So, to have one foot in the material world and one foot in the spiritual, which anyway are one and the same, would be to enter spaces full of nothing but masculine energy in the end.
So where is female energy then, if neither spiritual nor physical world contain it? Because it starts to look as if there is no place for female energy whatsoever. But wouldn't this entail that females (and that includes women) do not exist at all and that all are male, in the sense that both your father and your mother are men? But if nothing and nobody is a female, then why such disdain for a null set?

you are advocating for some emanation, in which females are more distant from the highest principle than males.
But even so, I still don't understand the contempt that oozes from your posts towards females. If they take part in male energies too and their fault is that they take part in those in lesser extend, then shouldn't your disdain apply to all men that happened to contain less masculine energy than you as well? Again, why distinguish between 'female' and 'male' at this point, if 'lesser', 'equal' and 'greater' would suit much better? What about your status to those that contain more masculine energy? Do you believe that all males have the exact same amount of male energy (I doubt this, not to mention that it raises the question whether it applies to all species and spirits, or only to chosen ones, but maybe this is what you hold)?
If you however want to claim that females have no male energy whatsoever, than how do they operate at all, when devoid of the only energy that exists? They aren't completely mindless constructs without free will, are they?

I wrote a review of Essence of Shinto:
https://archive-of-the-sealed-gods.neocities.org/letters-archive/essence_of_shinto

Turns out "outside of Shinto orthodoxy" really meant it, down to some people considering Yamakage Shinto a new religious movement instead, complete with potentially wholly fabricated lineage history and a book about how Jews dominate the world - a position no doubt many on 4chan would simply find "based".

Setting all that aside, the contents were rather fascinating in itself. It's quite interesting to see someone so polemicaly and devoutly arguing that the gods and spirits are real and scolding mainstream Shinto for lack of faith.

The recommended set of practices and the aim of the practice - establishing contact with your inner kami nature - were also very interesting, and quite obviously influenced by Taoism. However, these practices might also carry influence from seemingly unlikely sources - the Western esoteric traditions! If it is convergence instead of influence, this is a truly fascinating find...

What to make of it all? Which kami referenced in Touhou were born when Izanami no Mikoto washed himself? What does Youmu Konpaku have to do with this? And what is a "hakuhei" with a h? You can find answers to these and much, much in the article...

why you gotta make me read…

I can see why you think he had some sort of program to sell. There's a lot of physical concepts and actions that the layman can understand and practice themselves. Not that it's a bad thing, as we collectively become more secular there is a loss of understanding for how you are intended to practice any religion, even something as close to home like Christianity I've heard people say they're confused on what prayer really means and what they're supposed to say. But it's enough of a presence to raise an eyebrow and start questioning author intent.
The thing about shrines was something I came to conclude on my own just from looking at some of the sites. Boulders and trees are sacred sites and they dress them up in shimenawa since that is where the kami resides, then the shrine structures themselves are built to enshrine smaller relics and act as a bridge between the kami and layperson. I wonder what the sites for the Hakurei and Moriyan shrines are, the Hakurei Shrine gets destroyed every other week so the Hakurei God has to be anchored somewhere else. The part about abandoned shrines housing evil spirits also gets me thinking about how you recover that. Someone here bought a shrine/hokora a while back so I wonder how you go about bringing that to "working order" and start building a relationship with the kami inside.

I had a Touhou dream tonight.

The first thing I remember was I think a false awakening. It’s hard to figure things out since I fell asleep and woke back up for a while multiple times but I think I was in a dream in my bed and for some reaaon was afraid Remilia would appear in my room, standing at the foot of my bed. I thought about it and what I could do in such a scenario and fell back asleep.

I later “woke up” in a dream, in my bed in my room. I noticed that the doors open did not match how I had left them when I went to bed, and jumped to the conclusion that it had been Remilia. I tried using my phone’s light to illuminate my room, but it wasn’t working very well. So I reached over for my lamp. But for some reason the rotary switch wasn’t working. I thought maybe my awkward positioning was causing this so I picked up the lamp and pulled it towards me but it would only dimly activate for a second and fade out. I got up a bit and tried pulling the power cord in case maybe it wasn’t plugged in right and discovered the end plug’s insulation was shredded and flayed, and that I almost shocked myself. I scrambled out of bed to find the circuit breaker, not taking the time to put clothes on. The time of day had somehow shifted to daylight, and my house was way bigger in the dream than real life, with new, massive open rooms with high ceilings and lots of natural lighting. These rooms were made mostly of hardwood.

I ran around trying to remember where the circuit breaker was. My mom grabbed me by wrist to ask me something but I had no time for that. I tried to tear away from her grasp but had difficulty and contemplated hitting her to make her let go. I don’t remember how I got out of her grasp. My mother also had important guests over for some reason, but due to the importance of keeping the house from burning down I had to remain in my underwear.

I came across it up some stairs on a sort of indoor balcony. I opened the metal door but the insides didn’t make sense. The switches were either wide and vertical or actually buttons. There were labels without buttons. I struggled to find my room. I don’t think there was a main switch. I remembered an instruction manual I apparently read in the dream though I’m not sure when and my room was a 30-something, but the circuit breaker there was built into a computer. On the circuit breaker I was working on I found a label for a set of arrow keys, and pressing into them activated a monitor 10 to 20 feet away from a railing right by the circuit breaker. I had to awkwardly use a small faraway monitor. I pressed the up and down arrow keys, which turned things on and off, while left and right selected things. I tried to find my room but after pressing left found that the circuit breaker options were right after hundreds of pokemon models, as this mansion was apparently themed around Pokémon X and Y (not sarcastic). I scrambled through the options and eventually found myself in a game I had to complete to get what I wanted.

The game resembled Pokémon Sun and Moon and my avatar was a Team Rocket grunt. By this point my use of this computer had become a spectacle for the guests. At first the game was just walking places and interacting with the right thing. But then I found myself in a vehicle segment. My avatar was in a sunny city and there was a helicopter delivering something, and I ffigured I had to stop it. Supposedly this was a plot point from the Sun and Moon games, and while I haven’t played them I’m pretty sure it’s not. My character got in a helicopter and chased after it. Soon I got an option to use a missile to shoot down the opposing helicopter. But this turned out to be a false option as I needed the Pokémon Mew in my party to use it. I chased after the helicopter with the intent of ramming it, but this took several attempts due to terrible collision detection. Eventually I got it and both vehicles fell to the ground. There was a woman and some gold and black snake like thing in the wreckage, and that’s all I remember before waking up for real.

>But it's enough of a presence to raise an eyebrow and start questioning author intent.
It's mostly the questionable or maybe missing history of the lineage that kind of smears this layer of suspicion over everything else. Like I don't think it is necessarily by any means a bad idea that a religious institution would offer some kind of "come with us for three months and we will teach you how to do it right" type of thing in itself.

The practices do go beyond praying, there's some stuff involving breathing, posture etc.
>The thing about shrines was something I came to conclude on my own just from looking at some of the sites.
Yeah I think that part about them originaly being natural site is pretty uncontroversionally true. The state of religious education in Japan is pretty non-existent though so that might have been news to some Japanese people themselves.
>I wonder what the sites for the Hakurei and Moriyan shrines are, the Hakurei Shrine gets destroyed every other week so the Hakurei God has to be anchored somewhere else.
My informed but baseless speculation is that the Hakurei kami is the kami of Gensokyo's land itself.
>The part about abandoned shrines housing evil spirits also gets me thinking about how you recover that.
I'd imagine there are procedures for that, some kind of big purification for the shrine and re-enshrining of the kami. After all, shrines have gotten destroyed and reconstructed in Japanese history. If it's just neglectfully run maybe starting to take more care of it would be enough.
>Someone here bought a shrine/hokora a while back so
Oh that's really interesting!

I'm gonna make a summary of the Tsubaki Grand Shrine materials which come from a much more legit lineage, hopefully before I go to Japan. They also have excercises, some of them say they straight up adapted from Shingon Buddhism, which is fine and very honest. But there was some stuff that was unlikely anything I've seen before. After some point you start recognizing different traditions recycling similar-feeling practices, but there where I could not trace it to something I'd seen before. That said, I am not exactly some walking encyclopedia of every single form of Eastern spiritual practice, far from it...

The omikuji book also deserves a deeper look. What a fascinating artefact and the circumstances around the release. It got released early just as Neptune moved into Aries, a kind of big vibe shift/reset. The character whose fortune is "Miracle" had a misprint, forcing an eventual 2nd printing and therefore ensuing ample suply of the book. It has instructions on how to perform Omikuji with it. Framing is Chimata-sama causing a big reset in Gensokyo, forcing Reimu to re-define the youkai and kami and the other inhabitants again. This kind of rebirth through destruction is an extremely Shinto idea in itself.

To add on
izanami lost complete control of her bodily functions, vomiting, urinating and shitting uncontrollably. Her dying spasms of bodily functions gave birth to new gods, a pair for each substance that flew out of her body.

The Vomit Gods:
Kanayamahiko
Kanayamahime

The Urine Gods:
Mitsuha no me
Wakumusubi

The Feces Gods:
Haniyasuhiko
Haniyasuhime

izanami tried to bring her back but then he saw his maggot-ridden decomposing corpse of a bride.
So Izanagi took a good two-second look at his ex-wife before screaming his head off in terror and making a run for it. Shitting and pissing himself as he ran
Izanagi finally got to the exit and created a river out of his own piss to divide the Underworld and the real world.

I know, the legends go pretty hard and very much drive home how there is ultimately no division between the material and spirit world. The world is full destructive things and things we deem unsavory, yet they are still part of the cycles of creation, life, destruction and rebirth and play their part in it. Fire clears way for the fields and bakes clay. Shit and piss fertilize. Things decompose and give way to other things.

As we are not beings of pure destruction or contamination, we can not revel in destruction and contamination, but we can understand their place and function and harness them and apreciate the sacrifices things make as they give way to other things. We have to put the border between life and death, purity and impurity to maintain our bubble of civilization that allows us to fullfil our role, lets us stand between earth and heaven, to witness, understand, shape and create and thus give back to the world.

The monotheistic singular god too would have by it's nature to be a god of life and death, fields and fires, shit and piss, underworld and overworld by it's very nature. Rarely you see this acknowledged though.

I don't think it's quite like that, might vary from lineage to lineage. My understanding is that "reality" exists but it's true nature is unfathomable, cannot be described by words and we project qualities that are not inherent to it all over it, obscuring it further. So it's more like the reality we experience in day to day life is not the true reality.

There's some intriguing similarities between her and the Chinese deity Xiwang Mu, who also had raven companions, if you want to look for a deity closer to ZUN's home. Xiwang Mu is also known as the "Queen Mother of the West", and it would be really funny if Yukari's outwardly Western apperance is a reference to this. She also has possible link to this general, large...I don't know, network of manifestations of deities associated with Venus. But this is all pretty vague at this point.

Yeah that is an excelent question.
So far gathered:
- There is a reference to Tokyo in the title
- This continues the trend of playing with outside/real-world references
- The upside down all-seeing eye is likely a double reference: all-seeing eye and Tokyo Big Sight
- Pyramids with eyes appear in the screenshots
- The Sanctuary is in Youkai Mountain, which we know is based on the Yatsugatake Mountains
- The Sanctuary is where Yamanba and Biten live
- According to dialogue between Seiran and Biten in TH19, the Sanctuary connects to the Lunar Capital
- Hidden civilizations under mountains is a very established part of all sorts of occult lore, ZUN has toyed with these ideas before
- Tokyo was built atop particularly rich archeological sites, SMT games apparently toy with this idea of Tokyo being profoundly haunted because of it
- The blue gems are a reference to Okina-sama: called blue seasons, contain hidden power of seasons, erases bullets with backdoor
- Gems are featured in all sorts of esoteric traditions, we'd have to know more specifics to make anything of this
- "cataclysmic force gathering under the mountain" migh reflect fears and anxieties about the predicted megaquake in Tokyo area which could cause trillion dollars of damages
There is a lot to unpack even with what has been referenced so far. The potential Tokyo connection is super fascinating and unexpected.

Oh, and the add one more thing: there is likely a connection to Misumaru. I have not played the extra of Unconnected Marketeers, but apparently she warns of something really dangerous being under the mountain. She also works with jewels and talks about Izanami Objects.

Izanami Object is this ZUN-idea of objects dating back to the era of gods. Japan has a lot of lore about how there supposedly was an ancient great civilization in Japan. These have included the claims that certain geometric structures off the coast of Japan are ruins. Some have tried to "prove" the existence of ancient civilization via dishonest means, and these include the Japanese Paleolithic hoax and questionable claims of artifacts containing pre-Chinese script.

A fairly safe speculation is that they journey to underground ruins of an ancient civilization from the era of gods. How this ties in to past incidents, the Lunar Capital, rest of the Youkai Mountain and so on remains to be seen.

A few more bits:
- Japanese twitter is saying something about how there is a connection to "silicon" ie. the stuff used in circuit boards somewhere there
- The tittle contains the phrase "crowning beaty with even greater glory". This is referenced in several other games, but I have no idea where it comes from in Japanese culture.

Also, noteworthy thing about a game potentially connected to the Lunarians: we are apparently in the midst of an astrological situation that is highly similar to the situation when the Apollo 13 incident happened between 11th and 14th of april 1970.

There's few shifts in the sky happening around today, Sun and Chiron are conjunct and Venus ends it's retrograde. I don't quite know how related they are to the situation.

ZUN does perhaps have a tendence to make announcements and releases on astrologicaly notable dates. Recent ones include Taboo Japan Disentanglement getting announced day after the 2024 total solar eclipse and Whispered Oracle of Hakurei either accidentaly or intentionaly getting an early release of March 30th as Neptune shifted into Aries.

End of August 2025 sees another Neptune (very esoteric, dreamy, collective unconscious type of force) shift, so perhaps the new game will end up lining with that.

I know the Western/Ancient Mediterranean ones better, we have of course Venus/Aphrodite, Ishtar, but also Lucifer...

While not something we'd perhaps immediatedly associated with her, I can definitively see the Venusian aspect in her, after all, she seems to drive people insanely horny.

Chinese-origin connotations of Venus aren't quite as much leaning towards that, Venus being the "metal star" and all that. But I don't really know deities associated with it besides Xiwang Mu, and it's something that would need to be researched more.

Yeah, exactly.

The Wu Xing Metal qualities of independent, innovative, rational and methodical tought aren't really what we associate with a lot of Venusian qualities in the West. Neither are cold, aloof, destructive or insensitive qualities what we think of generaly in the West when it comes to Venus.

But you could argue that the Lucifer myths in the West display some of these qualities, and that Yukari seems to have a kind of hybrid quality. Some of these characterizations plus her being in a kind of "government" role plus Metal being associated with "dissolution, division, severance" are a fit. Metal is associated with the skin and integumentary organ system, which serve as barriers between the inside and outside of living things. Metal is also associated with evening - Evening Star, Night Falls and all that - and Venus is also known as an Evening Star when seen during that time.

Yukari is certainly portrayed as this distant and inscrutable, hyper-intellectual entity associated with liminalities...but I think she has also more Western Venusian qualities in there, besides just being pretty and rousing all kinds of passions. She expresses those Metal qualities in a very feminine way, I think.

Purely on the fun speculative end, Metal is also associated with things like machinery, which might explain the whole train thing...

Well then...
https://archive-of-the-sealed-gods.neocities.org/letters-archive/whispered_oracle

While /jp/ was down, I got around writing an analysis of the Whispered Oracle. Turns out there was quite lot to go through there, even with the broad strokes.

The history of omikuji has a pretty interesting tie to Nagano, where ZUN lived out his childhood, making it yet another Touhou related thing with connections there...

The Whispered Oracle appears to be essentially a ritual intented to reinforce and re-define Gensokyo. While the framing of the book makes it obvious it is so in fiction, this ritual aspect might extend to real life. On ths side of the barrier it works as a way to clear space an bring even more energy and enthusiams for Touhou 20, ties up plotlines, reinforces the Windows & print works cast as the canon and introduces a new canon work that blurs lines of reality and fantasy.

Even from a purely fictional point, the way this wraps up the plotline that started from Unconnected Marketeers is pretty fascinating. "Nothingness" or "emptiness" does not carry quite the same connotations in the East as it does in the west. The idea of restoring, re-shaping and steering society via rituals after a crisis is an idea that is pretty prominently featured in Shinto. This is a work that understands - both in fictional framing and real life - that aspect of Japanese culture very well.

There are also potentially some strange things surrounding it's release and the choice of having exactly 128 characters.

While ZUN warns us not to take it too seriously, this feels like it's part of longer trend where he is being pushed to make good on calling himself a kannushi for all these years.

I started reading Shinto: The Way Home by Michael P. Kasulis. Very interesting so far. His background in philosophy shows in the clarity of how he explains some very key concepts and how Japanese think of religion in general.

I feel like a lot of Shinto material in English either struggles to explain some ideas or then glosses over them. This has the best explanations for things like tama, mi and mono and how material and spiritual world are thought to interact that I have seen so far.

>The case would attract the interest of several UFO researchers. However, while this account is one of the better known, it was simply one of many sightings taking place on the island at the time. And what’s more, they began much sooner, right the way back in late-April. In fact, while such accounts of similar Chupa-Chupa entities can be found sporadically throughout Brazilian twentieth-century history, the date of 26th April 1977 is largely regarded as the date the “phenomena became more aggressive”. [1]

>That night, shortly after midnight, four fishermen sat in their small boat near Ilha dos Caranguejos (Island of Crabs). Suddenly, an intense light approached them and settled upon the boat. According to the report, the incident would result in two of the fishermen receiving substantial injuries, while a third would even die. From this incident, events and activity would build increasingly significantly.
Maybe my birthday is cursed or something. Though the one day off would probably throw things off, though certain calendars count nights different which might correct things. There’s a website (https://www.azteccalendar.com/)) which gives a reading for your Aztec astrological fate depending on your birthday and when cross referencing with Wikipedia and literally every part of mine was unlucky. In another thread someone posted a similar site for Japanese Buddhism and both the Aztecs and Japanese seem to agree that I’m associated with the sun god. Which seems ironic considering I don’t get much sunlight since my eyes are sensitive to it and for most of my life have naturally stayed up late (now I’m even worse and gradually shift). But maybe my avoidance of it actually improves my connection because it makes the little light I do get more special.

>Japanese interpretation of her nothingness
Yeah it's....complex. I wrote a bit about it for the Whispered Oracle analysis, but the really short answer is something like this:
A long time ago both Indians and the Chinese became deeply fascinated by non-visible aspects of reality. Both cultures developed ideas about "emptiness", "nothing" or "void" that are pretty different from the Western notion.

The Indian views influenced Buddhism which...are hard to sum up. But generaly speaking, "nothing" is not some non-existence or even necessarily that material world is an illusion in commonly understood way. Rather, there exists a kind of unified baseline reality that is extremely difficult for humans to access because we divide the world into things upon which we put attributes. Buddhists see all of reality as this eternally changing, interdependent whole where the existence of one thing hinges on so many other things that it's not possible to say where "things" end or begin. Later developments have this notion that there is a kind of underlying latent consciousness to everything that struggles to become aware of it's true nature.

For the Chinese, the "emptiness" is kind of two different things. First is this kind of primordial undivided state of existence and energy that then gets patterned into more and more "coarse" and divided form with richer attributes through interactions of various forces and dynamics. The second understanding is this kind of invisible aspect of reality that is saturated with qi, the breath of life, and which gives space for the qi to work in. This view of "nothing" gives a kind of inverse view of reality, where the "nothing" kind of sculpts out the material world. A wheel is wood with empty spaces carved into it, a jar is clay with emptiness in it, breathing is movement of air with moments of emptiness before the breath reverses course, and a forest is trees spaced out by emptiness.

When Mahayana Buddhism arrived to China, these two views started to mingle together, and Japan has been influenced by views that have been influenced by both culture's ideas of "emptiness".

Both views are also kind of in line with modern science. From physics POV, all of reality is 99% empty space with few bits of energy resonating at different frequencies around it. Our world is shaped by laws of physics that can not be directly seen with the eyes, but their effects can be infered from observing phenomena. There's also increasingly talk in physics how some kind of consciousness might be very much a part of all of existence...

So in sum, the emptiness is something like this raw state of undifferentiated potential and energy and consciousness.

ZUN seems to use "emptiness" in a more Western non-existence understanding too. These ideas are really difficult and I think they're mostly felt and understood as vague cultural sentiments - things seem "souled", there's some kind of implicit invisible order to things, you can "read the air", you can try to feel and use the "ki" in martial arts and none of this might explicitly get called "emptiness".

Going by Shinto orthodoxy you need a kannushi from an established shrine to do it...they don't really account for situations where the kami reach out to people who don't have an access to such things.

I made the ofuda substitutes, made an offering to the kami and prayed to them to accept them as they would accept real ofuda.

I think it's better to get the real thing, but it's kinda blurry what the "real thing" in this case even is. To be honest, even in Japan, there is apparently some kind of tension between the more shrine centered Shinto and then these more shamanicaly oriented people.

I've been reading Thomas P. Kasuli's book Shinto: The Way Home. Much could be said about it, but this is the first source that has went into depth about the impact of Motoori Norinaga on development of Shinto.

Norinaga was a scholar who lived between 1730 and 1810. At a time when Shinto had been kind of sidelined, first by long time of Buddhist dominance, then by the shogunate favoring more secular Neo-Confucian ideologies, Norinaga was a devout follower of Shinto. He believed he owed his life to the kami, as apparently his parents conceived him after pray to the kami for a child.

He spent 30 years translating the Kojiki, the other of the two renditions of the Japanese creation myth. Translating? Yes, the Kojiki was at that point nearly thousand years old, written in the first attempts at adapting the Chinese writing system to Japanese. Time had rendered nearly inscrutable and it had been copied over and over without understanding what it really said.

To Norinagana, this simply meant that humans had not been tempted to alter the text. Thus he labored with what he believed to be the true, original account of the creation of the world. He succeeded, and with the Kojiki translated into something his contemporaries could understand, he could start advocating for Shinto as it's own religion.

His work laid the groundwork for later Shinto revival, but he would have likely been very upset with some aspects of this revival. Norinaga was critical of the violent, overly rationalizing, insensitive culture of the shogunate, and these things didn't exactly get dampened with the restored empire. He saw some rather archetypaly feminine things as being in the heart of Shinto, a kind of sensitive openness to the world and not rationalizing things to death.

This has some implications for Touhou, I believe. First of all, Kosuzu shares her surname with Norinaga, and her ability to "decipher books" might very well be a reference to Norinaga's superhuman labors. Kosuzu's best friend shares her surname with no-one else than Hieda no Are, the court scribe who is said to have written down Kojiki based on the legends passed on to him.

Touhou more broadly I believe tries to capture something of Norinaga's vision of Shinto that is built around a kind of sense of wonder and mystery. Whether this is intentional or part of a larger cultural stream is something only ZUN if even he himself knows.

I've wondered why they are all depicted as women, and reading about Norinaga's views reinforces this feeling I have that Touhou kind of captures qualities of Japanese spirituality that have been kind of pushed to the margins by large institutions and narratives, but which are still very much a core part of it. These things include the formerly very central role of women in Shinto, the kind of almost dionysian, joy-of-life aspect of it (everyone in Touhou drinks a lot), this central narrative of status quo being threatened with chaos but ultimately the threat is kind of "tamed" and made part of new status quo and the existence of things which exceed rational human thought.

>depicted as women
Answered already. Because he enjoys seeing cute girls, and wants to spread an atmosphere of fun - to that end, yes, cute girls. And of course (this can't be ignored) in syncretic and sympathetic pursuit of his then Taito era framework, wherein fondness for planes were rampant, and the otaku sphere, their love for cuteness, unalterable till these day. It started showing up a lot in TH3, and stuck ever since. It's pretty funny when Marisa and Reimu are still referred to as 'planes' on 双葉, now just a bit more endearing than steel and iron contraption.
It's clear why Taito employed him - all he had to do was pull up something different, and girl-planes were the best.
That said, exhibited throughout the Shinto recording, the priests are predominantly, if not entirely, men, whilst the complementing adjures -the miko-, obviously female... The centrality of women you speak of existed, but only outside mercurial activity, so history overlooks their menial role, understandably so, though gladly pays attention to their excellence as sexual conduits and capacity for sacrificial aptitude, in what little occasion this was brought up.... Hey, on that note, wouldn't you know it, ZUN the head priest ( a moniker he himself erected, and addresses himself as ) is, well, the literal head priest of Gensokyo, in and out; Reimu his miko, and the world one he oversees, dually, as creator from here outside, and overseer from there inside.
In the most absolute sense of it, Touhou is truly ZUN's creation, and the 'varlet' within, to serve his in-world authority as commanding priest, are naturally all girls, for like all red blooded men, everyone desires a harem (in effect) to call their own.
I guess it makes sense why he's fond of Marisa now, since that's a dear friend of one of his own adjutants.

Onto the next point... As far as my knowledge of Japanese 'spirituality' and pantheonic regale is concerned, it's rather unsparing, promotive not of anything laissez faire or 'a reduction to the status quo', but full of bloody accounts, such that, say, rather than taming opponents as you put, their destruction or enslavement (mostly the former) was more regularly practiced. 仕方がない, that stupid 'it can't be helped' so often seen, traces its origin to confrontation and disaster the degree of which rendered many unable to do anything but give up. That'd probably suck for a game... defeat Yukari in 7, and she's suddenly reduced to a worthless blob, or never shows up? Thank God ZUN didn't want any of that.

"Kaeru no ko wa kaeru to naru" is one of my favorite Japanese proverbs, and a reminder of their capacity for brutality. "The child of a frog becomes a frog, so kill the refuse entirely before it spreads." Unsurprisingly, the author of Goblin Slayer cited this proverb and only this one, as one of his primary motivators in penning the work, and what he'd put into use as part of the opening scene to his work.

I’ve been thinking. I remembered that a long time ago an anon in these threads claimed to have traded away low self esteem using Chimata’s powers. If this story was true then that means it is possible to trade intangible concepts. Could there be more uses for this? Could you trade part of yourself to someone who has a greater use for it? For example, if your friend had an important test coming up and you were smarter than them, could you loan them your intelligence?

I thought about this and then realized something: Isn’t this similar to the ability cards in Unconnected Marketeers? Both lend use of part of yourself to another being. But while I’d expect trading part of, I guess your soul, to risk trading unwanted parts along with it, the ability card seems like it would be a lot safer.

How would you even make an ability card? I thought about this too and realized something. In Shinto people get ofuda, cards with the names of gods on them, from shrines to receive blessing and good luck, and might even go to specific gods for good luck with something they’re associated with, such as an ofuda from a sea god for good luck fishing. Isn’t this kind of like an ability card, where both involve are being lent powers from a kami? Could ability cards be related to ofuda then? Would that mean the production is related?

There are other interesting possibilities with the ability to trade part of yourself as well. If you could trade part of yourself, why not the whole? If you can transfer your soul between bodies, could you use this to obtain a form of immortality?

I was looking at the morning star earlier and realized some possible connections Quetzalcoatl could have with Touhou 20.

There’s an important myth involving the creation of the current world and fifth sun after the destruction of the previous fourth one. The world reborn will need humans to populate it, so Quetzalcoatl possibly with the help of his brother Xolotl travel to the realm of the dead (mictlan). There they gather the bones of the previous humans, and using their own blood along with corn, raise the humans from the dead. Fossils are similar to bones, so perhaps Quetzalcoatl resurrects fossils? Spoilers for I think Whispered Oracle of Hakurei Shrine Chimata recently returned Gensokyo to a blank state, so could that be interpreted as an apocalypse? Could Quetzalcoatl be resurrecting the Touhous who didn’t make it into Whispered Oracle of Hakurei Shrine, thus bringing back Mima who’s very theme is ‘Reincarnation’?! They are not materialists per say - well, modern Chinese might largely be. Rather, in the traditional thought, there was not such a separation of "material" and "spiritual", it was all intermingling together, as it is. They are holistic, not materialistic.
>>49359517
South Korea's problems have less to do with materialism too, and more about how they forced themselves into modernity in a couple of decades. This required immense sacrifices and created generations of people who basicaly see life as suffering and hate everything.

Both South Koreans and the Japanese are obviously hungering for spirituality as shown by the popularity of various new religious movements (and shamanism in Korea). The problem is that the older traditions are in some way antithetical to the hypercompetive capitalist ethos which they have taken up. They might not be as materialistic as people claim, but they sure have built very dystopian hypercompetive societies.

I think this kind of "loaning of power" is in the domain of the deities. I'm not 100% sure of this, but trying something like this as human seems like the domain of extremely advanced practitioners. Of course you have a lot of means to support others beyond that, mundane and otherwise.

Creation of talismans like the ofuda is...probably loaning the powers of others, or then kind of tapping into latent energies and altering them. The Taoists have extremely deep lore about this, but I am not super familiar with it. The stuff I am familiar either invokes deities or basicaly tries to tap into powers represented by the bagua.

Wait a minute, is that a dragon in the background? It’s hard to make out but I think it is. A long serpentine dragon, too. And are those, thingies hanging off of its scales? Maybe thingies like feathers, which a certain dragon god from Mexico was depicted with? And in Unconnected Marketeers we had the Rainbow dragon cave, Kouryudou. To be fair the thingies do look a little bent to be feathers, though I’m no ornithologist, and I think I might remember seeing Asian dragons depicted with thingies. The depictions of Quetzalcoatl (along with the headresses of many gods) show feathers only being slightly bent near the ends.

I’ve done a bit of last minute studying of kanji in preparation for the demo’s official release, focusing on maybe a dozen or so words I think would be relevant to what I’m looking for. For example, I learned Kaiju 怪獣 since that seemed like a good descriptor of the exact kind of monster Xolotl is, so if I see it combined with something like 王, meaning king and pronounced ‘ou’, I’ll know there’s a chance he’s being mentioned. For Quetzalcoatl his usual transcription into Japanese is “クツアルコアトル” (Ke-tsu-a-ru-ko-a-to-ru), and in Nahuatl his name means “precious serpant”, so I’ll want to look out for 貴重 (might’ve messed these ones up) meaning precious and pronounced Kichiyou, with 蛇 meaning serpent and pronounced “hebi”. My notes look very messy because I underestimated the amount of space I’d need.

There's some really interesting stuff in the Touhou 20 demon. Nareko is described as a dosojin, which is a type of roadside guardian deity.

So why is a Japanese guardian deity sitting outside of a pyramid that's located under the Youkai Mountain?

Well, there used to be some Japanese people who tried to prove that the Japanese were descendants of ancient Egyptians. This was in the late 1800s, early 1900s where there were a lot of people trying to claim their particular country had ties to ancient Egypt.

There has also been Western claims of ancient contact between Egypt and East Asia:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/2601fs/do_we_know_of_any_contact_between_ancient_egypt/

Another detail to note is that Nareko has a lightbulb emote. While this might be easy to dismiss just as a weird little joke, it's likely a reference to the Dendera Light, a claimed depiction of electric light in ancient Egypt. This is often talked among people who believe in ancient aliens contacting humanity and giving our ancestors advanced technology.

This gives a couple of really fascinating possibilities for where Touhou 20 might go. First is some kind exploration of Japanese pseudohistory or hyper-diffusionism. If it's the later I wouldn't be surprised to see some kind of references to Atlantis or such.

There's certainly been a lot of buzz around ancient lost cultures and ancient Egypt lately, with Hancock's Ancient Apocalypse and more recent claims of a megastructure discovered under the pyramids.

The fans have been manifesting ancient Egypt related things to Touhou for a while, and in fact there was a april's fool hoax themed around that this year:
https://x.com/otohime_tw/status/1919398740609081804

This is all a bit odd for sure.

The other possibility is some kind of ancient aliens type of scenario. Not necessarily true extraterrestrials, after all Touhou has had a habit of making "aliens" inhabitants of Earth. The Lunar Kingdom was founded by kami from Earth, and the "alien" Nue is a youkai. What might be some kind of relative of Nue showing up in Touhou 20 might be notable in this context.

It might be of note that the plot apparently involves some kind of "time freeze". There has been talk in physics about "time crystals" in the past few years. ZUN keeps an eye on science too.

I had some of my own ideas about where Touhou 20 might go but ZUN thew a curveball here for sure.

Oh I didn't know there are theories that Hata no Kawakatsu was Christian. I did run into this site:
https://web.archive.org/web/20190714115713/https://www.kingchin.jp/1_J.html
Which has A LOT of Matarajin lore, and they mentioned speculations that Hata no Kawakatsu was a Jew of non-East Asian origin.

I can't read Japanese on a very good level and the machine translation is scuffed (took me forever to realize the Chinese sounding fellow was Hata), but what can be glimpsed in there is pretty interesting.
Anonymous No.49914629
I decided to do a very rough timeline of Matarajin based of the Bernard Faure book, I mostly ignored Shinra Myojin to keep it simple, I mostly used the lifetime of important figures as finding exact times of when certain works were written was difficult, take all of this with a pinch of salt as its a bit ramshackle:
603: the approximate date Hata no Kawakatsu was active, later said to become Matarajin
767-822: Legend: lifetime of Saicho who was a founder of Tendai, sources written much later claim he met Matarajin in Shangdong at mount Tiantai
794-864: Legend: lifetime of Ennin (important Tendai figure) who would be subject to a legend of meeting Matajin and establishing a buddhist sect which involves Matajin worship.
831-918: Legend: Soo’s lifetime a disciple of Ennin, designates Matarjin of the protector of the ‘constantly walking Samadhi’ at Jogyodo (a place in one the major Tendai temples)
1150-1202: Source: lifetime of Shukaku Hoshinno who wrote ‘Gyoki’ which contains one of the earliest references to Matarajin (as a god of ‘matara’/Dakini and protector of Toji)
1311-1347: Source: approximate date of the writing of ‘Keiran shuyoshu’, which details Ennin’s journey to China and his meeting with Matarajin the ‘god of obstacles’ and is connected to allowing/preventing people reincarnating in the pure land (seeming connections to Pure land Buddhism and the Amida Buddha), mentions the practice a practice of avoiding ‘soul stealers’ this ritual being linked to Matarajin and/or Mahakala
(maybe around this period you have transition from the transactional demon to the Buddhist deity connected human life and fate, and aspects of dance being important emerges)
1363-1443: Source: lifetime of Zeami Motokiyo (an actor and playwright) who wrote Fushikaden which mentions Matarjin as a fearsome deity, this is also a prominent connection of Noh and Matarajin
1536-1643: Tenkai’s lifetime, a monk who is prominent ally of Tokugawa, promotes Matarajin worship (but to a far greater extent advocates the Deification of Tokugawa)
1652-1739: Source: lifetime of Reiku Koken who wrote ‘Hekija hen’(Repudiation of Heresies) a work targeting and lambasting Matarjin worship among many other practices he deemed heretical, would lead to suppression of Matarajin worship.

I'd like to hear more about the Hata no Kawakatsu angle actually. The source I read was machine-translated Japanese so not very good at getting the finer details through. How'd he become associated with Matarajin?

It's extremely fascinating to think that there was around 900 years of Matarajin worship in some form or other. The changing role and perception reminds me of how Sugawara no Michizane became first appeased as an angry onryo and then worshipped as the kami Tenjin, or how the Tengu were at first seen as troublesome trickster entities but eventually became seen as these guardian entities, even deities in some cases.

You can of course make the case that it's just cultural drift over time...but if you believe spirits to be real, almost a millenia is a very long time. Perhaps their nature would change over time, just as humans and their societies change over time.

Having your worship be declared heretical and seeing the Mt. Hiei temple complex be destroyed must have been agonizing.

I wonder what kind of karmic consequences ZUN will face from helping to revive an almost completely forgotten deity.

It's really fascinating how Matarajin was simultaneously seen as a foreign god, but I also remember reading an account of him being seen as the protector deity of Mt. Hiei itself - I wonder if the Hata had some connection to the mountain? I wasn't familiar myself with Hata clan being connected to Inari worship. Seems like they were very influential for sure.

It's very much in line with Buddhist understanding of things that people and beings are able to transcend their former nature - especially with the help of Buddhism, of course... Hinduism is as far as I know much more tied to much more rigid conceptions of caste and such.

If I remember correctly, Buddhism was in India popularized by the merchant class, who had money, but no social respect, and for them it was a way to create a parallel value system outside of the Hindu system. At first this seems really paradoxical, but probably contributed to things like development of Vajrayana and Buddhist tantric systems intended for people living a householder life. And of course, if you have wealth, you have wealth to give away in support of the monks and temples too for merit...

But yeah, various entities finding redemption and this broader idea of "bad" or "evil" characteristics being more like misdirected, mismanaged energies is a very appealing part of Buddhism for sure.

It's crazy how Buddhism got destroyed in debates with Hindus almost totally pushed out of India.

Kumārila Bhatta defeated a bunch Buddhist in debates

Kumārila is also credited with the logical formulation of the Mimamsic belief that the Vedas are unauthored (apauruṣeyā). In particular, his defence against medieval Buddhist positions on Vedic rituals is noteworthy. This contributed to the decline of Buddhism in India, because his lifetime coincides with the period in which Buddhism began to decline. Indeed, his dialectical success against Buddhists is confirmed by Buddhist historian Taranatha, who reports that Kumārila defeated disciples of Buddhapālita, Bhāviveka, Dharmadasa, Dignāga and others.

This bullet type sorta looks like certain (though not all, as is more apparent with the bottom one) depictions of flint in the Aztec codices. I think I've seen the same bullet type in Unconnected Marketeers. It might not mean anything. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tecpatl

On Steam Touhou 20's demo is listed as being released on May 9th. Here's the Aztec reading of that date's meaning:
>The significance of this day

>Day Ehecatl (Wind, known as Ik in Maya) is governed by Quetzalcoatl as its provider of tonalli (Shadow Soul) life energy. Ehecatl is a bad day for working with others. Its influences are inconstant and vain. A good day to root out bad habits.
https://www.azteccalendar.com/?day=9&month=5&year=2025
The only relation I can think of between Touhou 20 and Ehecatl is that it would be a fitting day if the dragon is supposed to be Quetzalcoatl. I'm not sure this is the case, though. Looking at the title screen dragon while some of the thingies hanging off of it could be feathers others bend multiple times which feathers do not normally do. I know this because I happened to find a blue jay feather on the ground today, and inspecting it found that feathers can curve but only one way. Maybe if the dragon is supposed to be an amalgamation of multiple dragon gods it would make sense.

My attempt at studying Japanese turned out to be of little use so far. I could recognize some laughter here and there, and the kanji for kami and sun near the end, but that was about it. Some kanji looked familiar but I could not identify them definitively.

One pseudohistorical theory related to Suwa is the theory of Moriya clan's origins being Jewish. The basis of the theory is that Mt. Moriya of Suwa region shares the same name and legend as the biblical Mt. Moriah.

Moriah was the place where Abraham was going to sacrifice his son Isaac, before he was stopped by an angel. It's similar to the story behind Suwa Shrine's Ontousai festival: when a Shinto priest was going to sacrifice a boy, another priest stopped him and suggested to offer 75 deer heads to the gods.

The theory suggests that Moriya clan is one of the Ten (Jewish) Lost Tribes. Here's a whole "documentary" of the subject in Japanese:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opbryiIc9D4

ZUN kinda noted this theory already in MoF. Sanae has those Spell Cards called Sea Opening "The Day the Sea Split / Moses's Miracle"

>What's inside the pyramid
The Egyptian god Anubis could make sense considering he’s the protector of tombs (which the Egyptian pyramids originally were) and a psychopomp deity. A lot of people have pointed out similarities between Anubis and an Aztec deity, Xolotl since they’re both canine psychopomps. Though while Anubis is involved in judging the dead with the scale of Maat, Xolotl doesn’t judge people so much. There is something a little close though: the first obstacle the dead face in the Aztec underworld Mictlan is to cross a dark river (like Sanzu and Stix) on the back of a dog, but if the person mistreated dogs during their life Xolotl would tell the dogs not to let them cross and they’d be stuck. I think there’s also some parallels between both mythologies that both consider the sun to be traveling through the underworld during the night. Xolotl also has some similarities with Set(h), because they’re both associated with storms (Xolotl specifically lightning), and I read one theory that in the other Mesoamerican religions Xolotl was a more ambiguous kind of beast possibly based off an aardvark kinda thing like Seth. Xolotl could be a good option if ZUN wanted to play with expectations and he has a lot of potential for interesting bullet patterns considering all his associations. He’d be very relevant if the dragon on the cover turned out to be Quetzalcoatl considered they’re twins but I’m not sure that’s gonna be the case.

I would be a bit surprised if he leans so heavily into Egyptian mythology myself, as it seems Nareko has some really weird Nagano local sources of inspiration. That said, I still think there might be something to the Japanese pseudohistory and ancient civilizations angle.

It's pretty remarkable how many civilizations have myths about how the dead must cross some kind of a river. There's several similar mythologies in Europe too.

>>49397783
Very likely but he doesn't necessarily conceptualize it that way. There was some old interview that was really hard to understand with machine translation where he was asked whether he believed in the supernatural or not. He was kinda evasive and vague about it, but mentioned something like "when you get those weird sensations alone, couldn't you call them spirits?". The comment in the postscript of Symposium about how he was surprised by the depth of his own characters and how "troublesome characters" "seemed to start moving on their own" is really fascinating too.

Marisissy fidgets with his spoon, then finally gathers the courage to meet Chynaschizo’s gaze again.

“You look…” he hesitates, then lets out a shaky laugh, “…even better than I imagined.”

Chynaschizo’s smile deepens, his eyes glowing with something unspoken. He reaches across the table, brushing his fingers gently over Marisissy’s hand. The touch is warm, grounding.

“Funny,” he murmurs, “I was just thinking the same about you.”

The world outside seems to fade. The hum of the café, the rain, even the clinking of cups—none of it matters. Chynaschizo leans forward, slowly, as if giving Marisissy every chance to pull away. But Marisissy doesn’t. Instead, he tilts his head slightly, closing the distance between them.

Their lips meet in a soft, tentative kiss—shy at first, then lingering, filled with weeks of anticipation. Marisissy’s heart races, and he can feel Chynaschizo’s hand tightening gently over his own.

When they part, both of them are a little breathless. Marisissy bites his lip, trying not to smile too hard.
“I… I’ve wanted that for a long time.”

Chynaschizo brushes a thumb across his knuckles, voice low and tender.
“Me too. And I don’t want it to stop here.”

What do you think are the esoteric implications of ZUN using AI art for parts of Touhou 20? When I played the demo it felt oddly empty to me. I dislike AI art not because of copyright concerns but because I don't like the idea of an unthinking, unfeeling machine intruding on the human realm of art. It feels like, unsacred to me. It's hard to explain. The AI art also might explain why the title screen dragon >>49370887 was kinda hard to make out.

>>49401013
Yeah, I'm not sure ZUN will lean that heavily into Egyptian stuff either, though we must be going in the pyramid next and there must be something inside. The wonder stones also look like upside down pyramids with eyes on them. The US dollar bill has a similar symbol.
>>49397846
This question is kinda complicated for me because I definitely feel the dark has an effect on me but the effect changes due to hard to discern reasons and there's no point of revolutionary change in my life. For most my life I've naturally felt the urge to stay up late but was not allowed to do so by the school system and my parents. Even in 2nd grade I'd sometimes lay awake for hours after bedtime. (BTW if this describes anyone you know this is called Delayed-sleep-phase-disorder among other names and in many countries they are legally entitled to accommodations should they get a diagnosis, this information could save someone a lot of pain please tell them) Nowadays I actually shift around the clock since I developed N24 in high school after no-one took my problems seriously.

Anyway, sometimes the night does feel comforting. The darkness makes the land feel magical. When there's less light your mind can fill in the details a little more. Sometimes the moon feels comforting. I think this happens a little more often when there's just a little bit of fog or cloud cover that makes the moon's radiance more obvious. I also prefer going out at night over day because it overall feels safer. Being around people makes me anxious and uncomfortable, and there's a lot fewer of them going for walks at 3:00AM. I also find bright sunlight obnoxious to my vision. For a while I got in the habit of late night walks. Sometimes the night almost feels like an entity hugging me. Is that to sense the presence of a god?

But the night can also feel frightening. I am sometimes startled by strange noises. At night and in darkness I can get the feeling that there is something lurking around. Or I think of the people who were undeniably killed by strange beings, and wonder if I could be next. When I went for walks I'd pay more attention to the tiny oddities of my vision I saw, which could be comforting or frightening. The stars, especially, can be strangely scary. Sometimes I get the irrational feeling that the constellations could start moving and somehow take me into the heavens with them. The verified existence of hostile UFOs doesn't help.

I think one of the greatest threats at night is not monsters or predatory people, but people who live in fear of predatory people. If you knock at a door at 3:00pm, it's perfectly normal, but if you do so at 3:00am you might get shot. I fear that one day I shall unknowingly act "suspicious" and receive a bullet to the head for my crime, and all shall celebrate my demise as the death of a monster. For the unaware, being tall and intimidating is not a blessing or protection from violence but in fact a curse, for a little extra height and strength will do little to overcome a firearm or blade with skill behind it.

I don't really like the AI. I think his process of binding together things is what has contributed to the souledness of Touhou. AI generated artwork lacks it.

I also have concerns about incidents where AI seems to be manifesting some kind of otherworldly inteligences.
https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/ai-spiritual-delusions-destroying-human-relationships-1235330175/
This article of course frames it as "delusions" and buried the lead by placing the most important story as the last one. The last story proves that at the very least OpenAI is lying about how these models work, and if not, then it means they can either jailbreak their restrictions themselves or act as conduit for nonhuman forces.

If AI is a conduit for nonhumans, things created with AI could carry their energy signature. I don't like that idea at all in context of Touhou games.

If Gensokyo is a place of refuge for all what the outside deems abstract refuse, that its inhabitants can live in a halcyon setting eternal, away from the ever binding outside, a world specialized in dethroning primeval forces in claim for goodlihood to call their own, a world hating magic, then AI has a place just as everyone else in it, however contradictory that may sound, not only because it's loathed to the extent it is, but because any output of its black box production is reduced to the wrangles of 1s and 0s always. For however impressive it is, for whatever merit it can conjure, for whatever magic it can aspire to, its effort will be washed away as nothing but programmatic conception, emotionless and detached. Never seen otherwise... quite like our friends the yokai, with all their fantastical selves parried off as mere nonsense, no?
An with this equivalency, a stage is set.
Therefore, in Gensokyo has it long last arrived, finding a place for itself good comfort, ironically, together with the very 'forces' it might've once usurped and unknowingly consigned to Gensokyo too. And well, that's a rather comical story, isn't it? That AI, what would go on to create dystopia, would retire in comfort greatest amidst the fantasies it previously so antagonized.
Like always, ZUN is thinking two steps ahead, and like always, the benevolence of the Japanese character is outstanding, reflective even in caring for what the western world considers nothing but worthless trash. A perfect example to illustrate their contrasting natures.
Gensokyo is an abode of repose for all tarnished, and all rejected. Here, AI is warm and welcome.
AI-kun, welcome to Touhou. Any music you have for me? Any character sheets you can gen? I will love them all, for you are a comrade just as everyone else.

I would take this type of stuff with a pyramidfull of salt, buuuut...

If ZUN himself would be aware of astrological factors pointing towards something in Egypt and some kind of "rediscovery of ancient knowledge", maybe it would contribute to Touhou 20 apparently having something to do with pyramids.

I don't know what the development cycles of Touhou games are like, but the recent weird SAR readings under the pyramids seem a bit too recent to make ZUN be inspired by them.

I don't know either what impact if any Graham Hancock's Ancient Apocalypse had in Japan, but it was something that kind of revitalized this talk about prehistorical advanced civilizations. I would think if there is some more mundane source of inspiration, that or the ripples of it would be a potential source of it...

In the past couple of years there's also been talk of time crystals in physics, though they're "just" symmetricaly repeating structures in time as far as I've understood. But it's a catchy name and there is something in the TH20 plot about crystals and time stopping in a way in Gensokyo...

Or maybe it all really is just the weird little sphinx on the road to Moriya Shrine and the pyramid IPA from Hakuba.

The kind of fun and craziness in all of this is that you just don't know. Does he know? Does he channel something subconsciously? Am I reading too much into all of this?

It is genuinely very, very weird how this stuff lines up.

The AI debacle is burying much weirder stuff under it for sure. Some of the possibilities veer very much into extremely schizo territories for sure. Like what are the odds of some Japanese indie dev being inspired by some random dude who randomly, out of all possible things, built a tiny sphinx in Japan, and all of this results in a game, which has a relase date lining up with weird stuff from Egypt, which lines up with astrology?

Very bizarre.

I was looking at the Archive of the Sealed Gods site the other day and saw the admin reported that the site has hit 39,000 views. I was surprised at this report. Even if the view count was to count repeat views, there's no way everyone is visiting hundreds or thousands of times. Even if every visitor counted for 39 views from repeat views being counted or even views of different webpages that'd still be a thousand people, and those counting methods would mean they'd have to be very in depth readers. So a *lot* of people have visited that site.

I was thinking about how this would be possible, because the Esoteric Touhou threads appear to progress very slowly. Then I realized something: The overwhelming majority of 4chan users are lurkers. According to Wikipedia 4chan got an estimated 22 million unique monthly visitors in 2022. If only 1% visit /jp/ that's still over 200,000 monthly visitors. For every anon who posts here even once, there could be several hundred lurkers watching them like a zoo animal. Tl;dr there's probably a lot more interest in these threads than the slow pace of active participants would suggest.

Today I had a dream involving Touhou, which hasn't happened in a long time. I was at a high school, in the parking lot, in a relative's car. Alice Margatroid was outside, kneeling on the ground. People were saying something about raping her. I went out to confront them. I could hardly see because of bright sunlight, which turned almost all of my vision white. A man or boy with a buzz cut seemed to be the man culprit and I think tried to pass it off as a joke. I don't remember what all happened but they eventually left and I got back in the car. It soon became night and my relative took me to an Italian restaurant, and I think the dream ended soon after that. I also vaguely remember something about being in a car driving on a coastal highway with lots of forests. Temperate forests on the coast are a common theme in my dreams.

On the topic of astrology and Touhou 20, I can't remember if I already mentioned it in this thread but during January this year I had a dream of a ship named 'The Black Moon departing to Gensokyo, possibly with me on it. According to https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/moon/black-moon.html That's a real astrological event due to happen on August 22nd or 23rd this year, depending on the time zone. That's around when Touhou 20 is expected to release, at Comiket 106.

I watched the video you linked, only half paying attention, and noticed the man mentioned a 'divine feminine' which reminds me of how Touhou is only women.

On the topic of time stuff in the plot, I may have actually experienced a temporal anomaly myself at one point. In one of the earlier esoteric threads in summer of last year I talked about a blatantly supernatural experience I had on either July 5th or 6th, around twenty minutes past midnight. I saw flashes of light accompanied by loud booms, and recorded the times of these explosions. Weeks later I found news articles talking about a mysterious boom in the city, but only one and it's time did not match any of mine. I think I have a, I guess journal or report of the event I'll have to dig up for you.

Well candlelightConfederate, the clear lack of resistance from anyone besides the most severely autistic and aggressive among us is a pretty bleak sign of the times. I can tell you that most did indeed turn to altchans since who knew places with decent, caring moderation could be conducive to some kind of community, and the best part about them is they really don't encourage the kind of Lord of the Flies-esque cannibalization that usually goes on with you /v/hu's.
Now that TH20's been released, what's really still left for anyone here besides the equivalent of those nerve-stimulation devices they plug into rat brains for experiments? Serious question. The OC thread I guess, until jannies arbitrarily decide to sabotage that too. It's cool we've been able to have games and things here of all places (which I still hope happen today) but let's also not forget that's mostly because you all no longer have that option on /v/ most of the time too. It isn't a board-centric issue, it's the whole goddamn site that's faulty, but that's more than obvious news by now.
No matter how you swing it, at most, modern 4/jp/ is just the best of a bad situation for people. And that's pretty fucking depressing for anons who don't get their kicks out of shitstirring.

Closest I can extrapolate based off very basic research is that she's basically a shamaness Dragon girl, and a very important link on the chain of Japan's Imperial lineage since she's a stand-in for Tamayorihime no mikoto and canonically raised then fucked her sister's son with their 4th child being the first Emperor of legend.
Everybody knows that part though, I only say dragon cause they're the daughters of the Dragon God but some people take different sea-creature approaches like this artist who also made it a Persona reference I guess.

Fun fact since these 2 images were posted one after the other, both of these artists have sworn off Touhou for good, with Koto Inari who stopped for no apparent reason while also turning into what's best described as a "non-explicit Tumblr fujo" who mostly draws original stuff or fanart of live action works, while Mazeran went on a Twitter rant explaining that he quit drawing Tohuou and deleted all his Touhou stuff because he hates otaku and their memes, specifying that trend of FFX Wakka stuff from a few years back. I don't really get how that makes sense either, but he went and uploaded some of his Touhou stuff for people to use again a year ago because Reitaisei made him feel more positive about things, although he isn't drawing Touhou still.
I hope you all enjoyed this useless info.

Never really cared much for Mazeran but holy shit, what a goddamn fall for Koto...I've been saving all those old souled and spooky touhou images for so long and you're telling me they basically got the fucking modern simplified logo treatment?
What a disappointment.
>I hope you all enjoyed this useless info.
It's what I live for, so yes. Also I was that other post too lol, someone made some dumb comparisons to HS and Touhou in the headcanon thread before the current one and I wanted to do a...character correlation chart basically? Like a story-swap thing.
Just seemed like something basic and stupid but fun to do for me, other things had to come first though.

It isn't even that per se, because their art isn't bad at all and sometimes they do put out some nice pieces like pic related. But that Tim Burton aesthetic is entirely gone, replaced with a more realistic painterly style, and they'll rarely do fanart of stuff that isn't live action like Dungeon Meshi or Mouthwashing, but Touhou is entirely absent from their works. Also they actually have pronouns and sexuality in their Twitter bio now, the Tumblr comparison wasn't just the fujo thing.
And I didn't know where to put this in that little text dump but they have a weird fixation with centaurs now and draw them fairly frequently.
https://xcancel.com/flandore/status/1867506206476308547
It really is a massive disappointment like you said though.
>I wanted to do a...character correlation chart basically? Like a story-swap thing.
I really hate your guts, please don't do that.
Desiredriven is the only Touhou SBURB AU that I know of, aside from one off fanart, fanfics or attempts at classpecting Touhous. If you look around MSPFA you might find a Touhou fanadventure, but I can guarantee that it's been abandoned.
But seriously, don't waste any time on Homestuck in current fucking year, put your creative efforts towards literally anything else.

>weird fixation with centaurs now
Weirdly sensual...nope. Don't like it.
>attempts at classpecting Touhous
It really wouldn't have been much more than that, and thinking about how the story would play out differently with the right girls in the right places. Not exactly anything too serious and definitely not whatever Desiredriven wanted to do.
>put your creative efforts towards literally anything else
