what's the most interesting thing you've seen there?
how different is the culture and mindset of 2channers and futaba users from ours?

i’ve seen some threads on 2chan here before, but just a note for jannies: these boards are very niche Japanese media and often linked to otaku stuff like touhou. hope this thread is okay

Something interesting about futaba is that they have a slower serious touhou board and another one just for touhou shitposting which is faster. I guess most gyates come from there

I've started lurking futaba recently, and some of the things I've noticed is that there is a guy (group?) on nijiura that likes to spam random threads with scat images. the report queue is also just a public board with image uploads disabled, and sometimes some angry toshiaki will jump in there to shit it up yelling at the admin for one reason or another.

The Japanese summer is pretty similar to that of the US's east of the Mississippi river, albeit it the peak months vary a little in timing. some people in this thread seem to be confused about the japanese date system. Remember, it's year/month/day over there. So on some boards, like futaba's /b/ equivalent, things are pretty active. The '25' at the start of the posts means 2025, not the 25th day.

2ch and 2channel are the same things. It's a text based forum (textboard) established in the 90's. 5ch/5channel was made after 2channel shut down somewhere in the late 2010's. (There's also open2ch which if I'm not mistaken was made in 2012 as an alternative to 2channel)
2chan/Futaba is an imageboard and was made as a refugee site when 2channel was shut down in the early days, and yeah, it's probably the closest to 4chan.

There's more imageboards besides Futaba, like Momi3. But I don't know if those are any more active than Futaba or if they have something to offer that Futaba doesn't. English imageboards typically cater to certain niches (for example we have an imageboard about Yume Nikki, an imageboard about Vocaloid, an imageboard about Touhou, an imageboard about poorly drawn bearded bald men with their mouths open). And I don't know if the Japanese have anything like that.

Because Japan lacks many laws that other countries have, notably animal cruelty, age, a very different idea of what 'consent' means, bestiality, etc. It's easier to ban foreign IPs then some random person in another country stumbling on animal torture videos and causing an international controversy over it. CP was completely legal in Japan until like 1999 and I don't think they fully banned it, there's tons of loopholes.

Every time I have used Japanese imageboards I am quickly confronted with three things:

1) Japanese anons LOVE calling people they dislike cockroaches
2) Threads are either stream of conscious gibberish or super serious with no inbetween
3) Probably a generalization, but they tend to avoid talking about themselves, which I kind of admire

Overall it's not really worth it to explore, unless you are into baseball or want to see the polar opposite opinions on certain topics like vidya or gambling.

I was watching something recently about how the Chinese, and to an extent the Japanese, have a problem going on right now where they're forgetting how to write runes. Because of how their typing systems are set up, and it touched on how writing and drawing is handled by the same region in the brain, which is why it's easy to read a rune without being able to replicate it correctly. Like being able to see art and know what it is, but unable to draw it.
Makes me wonder if being adept in a high kanji/hanzi count and being able to write them reflects a certain level of development in that part of the brain that carries over a bit in regards to art.

I kinda doubt asians are naturally gifted where it comes to artistic ability. I think it's more a natural grasp of aesthetics. Japanese, Chinese, etc. can all recognize a good artistic aesthetic and adopt it even if the execution is flawed. Among non-asians this is kinda rare. Like you can see this >>50020190 and you're like oh he's not just depicting the girl, he's using pastel colors, adding a little line weight at some hard/dark places, choosing a creative angle, etc. Its like asians really take joy in how the art looks whereas non-asians are racing to depict whatever the subject is, often doing the bare minimum just to make it resemble a girl or whatever. Most of them don't even try to make beautiful line/brush strokes, your art can't be pleasant to look at if the lines/brush strokes/colors that make it up aren't. There are definitely exceptions though.

I get your point, but I think it has more to do with how Japanese society is structured around collectivism and harmony, while most of the world leans more toward individualism.
People already act awful in real life, and a lot of those frustrated with it see “underground” internet spaces as places where they can act the way they really want to, without any filters (though sometimes they’re just trolling because they enjoy being assholes, like plenty of people are offline too).
Even 2ch/5ch had its share of awful stuff, like the cookie scandals, akihabara massacre and the drama involving that certain fat lawyer for example.

Back 10+ years ago, it was normal to have movies, games, TV shows, etc. be the biggest thing in pop culture but these days that's rare. Celebrities have been replaced by politicians, and the current gen of musicians and actors don't come anywhere near the fame of past generations.

One of the biggest benefits/pratfalls of Futaba Channel is its self moderation. Users can create threads and delete replies that are off topic. Users can also "del" a post where it can be quarantined and removed. Rarely, if ever, do real mods step in. And given the "respect" level of Japanese people, you would expect people to act proper and accordingly.
However certain boards, especially some slower ones, get plagued with off topic vandalism and spam. That board is supposed to be for posting original drawings, but its mostly off topic shit. Mods don't clean up the mess and since the board is sorta dead there are not enough people around to "del" and help self moderate. Take what I say with a grain of salt though, this is only what I have seen for my years lurking the site and what I can assume.

It's handy to browse the site using Chrome or a Chrome based browser since you can translate entire pages to English. There is also this homepage that is English translated.

4chan was the same way until a certain faggot former admin got mad that people were posting anime porn on /a/ instead of /h/. Separating it from /b/, making certain boards "sfw", separating all the fun posts from it into /jp/ and making /jp/ worksafe, he really ran this site into the ground in the name of his stupid weebtoons board. And the end result is that it is still shit and unusable.
