Marisa has always been pretty humble and kind to her opponents (except in PC-98 where she was more gung-ho). It's funny how she complements all the other characters in the EoSD danmaku reviews while Reimu trashes them. The only time Marisa ever showed arrogance and be all talk is regarding being capable of cooking something that doesn't involve mushrooms. The only thing she really wants to do is improve her magic, she doesn't really care about being #1 or anything.

Magician as a race isn't technically a youkai, they're just humans that are born being able to use magic unless they become ageless youkai. Humans without natural talent can learn magic and become ageless youkai too. They are both thereafter magicians in a youkai sense. I'm not sure why they're considered youkai just for being magically ageless other than they generally use evil magic. I feel like ZUN should reclassify them as a kind of hermit or half youkai or something. They're really only youkai in name only otherwise, and aren't naturally stronger than humans(Byakuren included), nor need to eat people or at all, don't need to be feared or anything. Not sure if they can heal themselves after being killed like other youkai either but there's probably some magic to heal and revive like a phylactery or something.

He didn't become a magician, he killed himself and tricked Kosuzu into making him an angry ghost via placing schizo ramblings alongside actual fortune telling advice and gaining a grudge when Kosuzu rightfully thought that part was bullshit. Then he solidified himself similar to a ghosthu instead of being a body-less spirit. He did something unspecified to Kosuzu that made her pass out as well. Probably possessed her and felt her up. Gotta wonder why he didn't foresee Reimu killing him but maybe that was part of his master plan, switching the grudge to her instead of Kosuzu's dismissing of his works.(which ended up being destroyed)

"She" wasn't youkaifying, she was astral projecting. Her body might have turned into some other kind of youkai. It's vague but she wasn't necessarily becoming a magician youkai. Half-youkai were-creatures were said to be allowed to live in the village and there are plenty of youkai who hide there or are wanted, like Miyoi, I wonder what would happen if a human got turned to a vampire or something against their will.

Youkai feels like a broad term mainly for segregation/categorization purposes at this point. Which I guess isn't entirely unfair, but it feels like there does need to be some more distinction at times.
Since it just feels kind of odd classifying what is, essentially a typical western wizard/magic user, as a youkai. Even if they fit the whole "yeah, you can't explain this shit, must be youkai machinations at work" to your common Gensokyo resident lacking outside knowledge, but maybe that's the point.

Well to be fair, witches are associated with typical halloween monsters like vampires, werewolves, mummies, etc. I just feel like there should be a distinction between monsters like those that were once human and ones that are like animate cursed dolls or some type of evil fairy. And I will be even more fair and say that western witches do kidnap and/or eat children but it's not the same as a creature purely born of imagination that can come back after being cut in half or a creature that's the embodiment of a lake.

Magic has been always around in the setting, being an universal force akin to physics. It's very plausible that there were magicians even before lunarians moved to the moon, and the latter would create the OG youkai as watered down versions of them, eventually 'evolving' (devolving?) into the wide range of different lunatics we know today

Alice was a normal human spellcaster before turning into a proper magician. If PC-98 is still canon (it kind of is, but with a lot of retcons here and there), Shinki didn't create her, so Alice doesn't fall into that category. Also, Shinki created her realm and her demons with her godly essence, which is a bit different than the magic Marisa and co. employ.
And yes, it's totally possible that some kabals of magicians (and other things) made some versions of these OG youkai.

This is kind of out-of-control popular fanon
Alice's in-game dialogue in Mystic Square heavily implies she is non-human (and considering the fact that she looks pretty similar to the rest of the Makai demons, is likely a Makai demon). When ZUN rewrote Alice for windows he included that tidbit that she was a former human turned youkai magician. A lot of fans (jp fans mind you, don't pin this as a western fanbase thing) wanting to connect Mystic Square to PCB came up with the whole "Alice was human in Mystic Square" thing as a way of reconciling the visible age differences (and to be fair Alice's PCB dialogue implies the Mystic Square encounter did happen)

To this day we do not know if Windows!Alice has any connection to Makai, the closest I know of being Alice having a single spellcard called Evil Light "Devilry Light Ray" since it doesn't follow her usual naming conventions and references Devils

Think it was from CiLR and also if I recall Yukari actually corroborates it but puts it from a different point of view. Generally, the takeaway here is that while the Lunarians claim direct responsibility it's more of an unpoetic way of saying "Youkai are born from the fear of night"
